Ohio Bobkittens (Beavis, FredOU, Hocking Jackassery)

There is also a growing and sizable precentage of the student body that does not support Ohio State. The fact is, it isn't just "30 or 45" anymore that don't support OSU. It is a very sizable number. They wear "The Real O-H-I-O" and "OSwho?" shirts and heckle kids in OSU gear. It is somewhat good-natured, but it certainly isn't just teasing. It is a little deeper than that. There is some real dislike towards Ohio State on campus these days in Athens. This isn't just a lack of support for Ohio State in Athens. This is a rivalry.

A lot of whining about Ohio State fans who never went to Ohio State. So you're only allowed to be a fan of that team if you went there? What if you didn't go to college? You can't be a fan? What if you went to a school that didn't have a team? Or you went to a school that had a Div-III team? Div-II? What if you went to one school, transferred to another, and then transferred to a third school? Which team are you allowed to root for then? Or you graduated from one school, and got a graduate degree from another?

The Worst College Football Teams of All Time
1994 Ohio (0-11, -28.78)
The Bobcats actually had non-terrible defense that year, but they had the worst offense in the country (7.5 ppg), while playing one of the 10 worst schedules in the country. Ohio never scored more than 16 points, managed to lose a game 5-0 (to Utah State), and didn't score two touchdowns in a game after September. Woof.

"I've seen several hats over the last six months or so, both here and in or around Columbus that have the scarlet and gray block O, which I think we grandfathered in in our agreement, but with the word "O H I O" written across the block O. Not only is it an ugly design -- sort of two logos at war -- it is also a very blatant attempt to say one emblem (easily identified block O) refers to the school mention in the other logo -- the aforementioned "O H I O." It's enough to make you puke. I nearly said something to one of the men wearing one of these monstrosities, but he looked dumber than a rock, and I figured that he would not understand anything I said, plus he looked like a guy who if crossed would give me an upcut to the jaw. So discretion being the better part of valor at times, I punted and waited for a better opportunity to confront this minor evil."

Ha. "So I came running to an internet message board, where my friends will all back me up. Not to mention that I got to change the details of the story all I wanted so that I can sound like the winner."

If Cincinnati is Ohio State's "little brother", full of angst at the attention "big brother" is getting, then Ohio U must be Ohio State's big brother. In this case, still not as good, but not for lack of talking about how awesome they are.

OU is not Ohio State's big brother. They are our older, ne'er do well brother who squandered their birthright by being out-and-out fuckups and now live a bitter, jealous existence after having watched their younger brother be handed the family business nearly a century and a half ago.

Posted it elsewhere, but Cincy and OU really have absolutely no institutional identity outside of comparing themselves to Ohio State, finding themselves lacking, going into deep, delusional denial about those differences while still whining about the unfairness of it all. Their entire view of themselves and sense of self-worth is grounded in looking into the mirror and not seeing Theee Ohio State University reflected back. Say what you will about Fredo (and it's a lot), but Fredo has at least carved out their own institutional identity as a poor man's Denison that isn't solely related to how they stack up against the flagship. They're treacherous, undermining, backstabbing little #$&^s, but they do have their own identity.

Fredo is the lesser known Miami, right?
Are we spose to hate Kent State, Akron, Clev State, etc. too? Maybe it's just cuz I didnt live in Ohio as an adult, but I have a feeling these are just slightly noisy minorities - Cinci aside. Cinci has always felt the need to separate from Cleveland-Columbus hegemony of "Ohio", somewhat understandable given they're the 'other' metropolis w/major sports, only U that comes anywhere near tOSU academically, and brief period in a BCS conf.

But I just can't really get my hate on for Athens. These forum people are just a bitter and pathetic minority.

I didn't grow up in Ohio either, and that's probably why I can look at them with a little more detachment since I didn't have relatives or high school friends attending. Those schools are essentially nothing to me other than how they've related to Ohio State over time. My disdain for Fredo and OU comes from the history of those schools doing everything they could to essentially cripple Ohio State in the 60s and 70s and hold it back relative to the other Big Ten schools in some petty attempt to undo the previous century of bitterness and jealousy over Ohio State having been founded and placed in the state's flagship role instead of them. We all laugh at Nebraska getting booted from the AAU, but that may very well have been our fate had Rhodes and the former Miami President who ran the Ohio Board of Regents under him (Millett) had another five or six years. Rhodes was long gone by the time that I came to Ohio State, but the damage was still being undone, and I wrote a research paper on it where I spoke to several principles as well as went through the university's oral history project. Trust me. Anyone who truly cares about Ohio State and wants it to succeed at the highest levels possible should have nothing but disgust for Fredo and Beavis.

The rest certainly didn't help Ohio State and were hoping to get their share of the spoils. Nonetheless, they weren't the primary drivers behind this, so I don't really view them with the disgust that I do Fredo and OU. Cincy wasn't really even part of the state system for most of this time, so their hands are actually quite clean here.
