High School Ohio High School Football General Discussion

The OHSAA Board of Directors, which assisted OHSAA staff to create the proposal and approved it by a 9-0 vote, considers this a win-win situation for all schools since it will not matter how many games each team has played leading up to the playoffs. Instead of the computer ratings system determining which teams qualify for the playoffs, the coaches in each region will conduct a tournament seed meeting the week of September 28 to form the regional bracket, similar to the process in other OHSAA team sports.

Schools may keep their first six previously scheduled games, but all regular-season football contracts are now voidable by either school, especially in the event that conferences redo their league schedules to fit into the first six weeks. In addition, the OHSAA will determine new playoff regions in September. Schools that are eliminated from the playoffs may continue to schedule regular-season games up until November 14.

2020 OHSAA Football
  • Regular-season games will begin the week of August 24 (same regular-season starting date).
  • All teams eligible to enter the OHSAA playoffs. New regions will be determined in September.
  • Number of playoff rounds dependent upon the number of schools entering the playoffs in each division. Coaches in each region will seed all playoff teams in the region to form a bracket, similar to other OHSAA sports.
  • Schools eliminated from the OHSAA playoffs or that choose not to enter the OHSAA playoffs have the option to schedule additional regular season contests through Saturday, November 14 (maximum of 10 regular season contests permitted).
  • Regular season Week 1: Week of August 24

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced its formal plan to expand the Ohio high school football playoffs on Thursday afternoon. The governing body of high school athletics officially approved new regulations that will double the number of playoff participants in football from eight teams per region to 16.

In the past, teams with the highest seed were able to host first round playoff games. Now the highest seeded team will get homefield advantage in the first two rounds of the tournament before games move to neutral sites. The adjusting of the playoff format was somewhat tested this past fall when the OHSAA allowed all teams to qualify for the postseason after a COVID-shortened regular season. That experimentation helped pave the way for the expanded playoffs.

I have a very silly question as the most casual of casual OHSAA football fan.

My local HS plays in the Eastern Cincinnati League. The compete against schools like Loveland, Anderson, Turpin, Kings....etc
Most of the Week One matchups had teams playing "Greater Cincinnati" based teams. Some teams played Middletown, some teams played Withrow...etc

Anderson, a common opponent, played South Oldham HS, a Suburban Louisville school over 90 miles away.
What are the rules on this? Is Week One effectively considered a "Pre-Season" game that has no impact on standings so you can play whomever you can get on the schedule?

I may be wrong but I think 448 teams in Ohio qualifies for playoffs now... so who you play doesn't seem to matter as much
Akron Hoban is in an interesting quandary, no one in Ohio wants to play them.. they had to find 4 out of state teams this year... 5th one cancelled
so in a normal world there'd be no way Hoban could even qualify since St Ed, Iggy and Glenville are 3 of their 5 Ohio games.. BRUTAL schedule
Out of state games: vs #1 in KY; #11 in PA; #5 in VA; #6 in NY
