Ohio Stadium aka THE Horseshoe (Official Thread)

Can't be an expansion, since there's not enough time to complete it...unless he means they'll start the expansion in Jan/Feb next year.

They haven't even paid off the last expansion almost a decade ago

But under this athletic department leadership, anything is possible, including naming it "Wexner Field at Ohio Stadium."

Why the need/expense for permanent lights? Don't the networks foot the bill for
Lights when needed ?

Because it is lit like a parking lot, and somehow they manage to run the lights at the track, baseball and softball stadiums just as flood lighting for games that finish after dark?

Because it is ridiculous to hold Friday night lights with even less lights than on game days?

Because even stodgy old Michigan realized it was a necessary upgrade?

Thanks for nothing, Superboy. :tibor:

While the networks foot the up front bill for the lights, it's still deducted from the conference payout at the end. So, it makes sense to spend on the permanent lights.

"The benefits of having permanent lights include having more flexibility in scheduling - not needing as much advance warning to play host to a night game, for example - and fewer logistical issues on game days.

"I anticipate that we'll do more night games down the road," Smith said.

Without the cranes and temporary light towers, OSU would gain parking spots, and traffic flow around the stadium would improve.

Also, Smith said his staff anticipates more opportunities to rent out the stadium in the evenings for charity or community events, providing another revenue stream to the department."

Wish I had graduated somewhere inside. Black gowns, 90 degree heat, and high humidity. It was miserable, and John Glenn, while a man of many impressive accomplishments, is not a charismatic speaker.

I graduated under the same situation, except some graduates decided to protest the speaker causing a commotion during my graduation. Still, if I had a choice between The 'Shoe and the Oval, I'd take the 'Shoe any day.

Ohio State football: Additional 2,500 seats proposed for stadium
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch? Friday May 31, 2013

The Ohio State athletic department will send a proposal to the university?s board of trustees next week seeking approval for a 2,500-seat addition to Ohio Stadium in 2014 that will cost an estimated $9 million and make it the third-largest college football stadium.

Athletic director Gene Smith confirmed the plans to The Dispatch last night.

?We are presenting to the board next week an expansion adding 2,500 seats to the south end zone,? Smith, who is on vacation, said in a text message.

He did not elaborate, but sources said the new seating sections are expected to bridge the gaps over the ramps in the southeast and southwest corners.

The listed seating capacity by Ohio State is 102,329. The expansion would push that to 104,829, ahead of Neyland Stadium (102,455) at Tennessee. Michigan Stadium is the largest in the nation (109,901), followed by Penn State?s Beaver Stadium (106,572).

Plans were approved last year to add permanent field lighting to Ohio Stadium, a $2 million project. Smith said it has yet to be determined whether that project will take place in 2014 or 2015. The Buckeyes will play two night games in the stadium this season, for which temporary lighting will be used.
