Ohio Stadium aka THE Horseshoe (Official Thread)

Would be a cool addition. Wish we could somehow get the most seats. Seeing scUM at the top of anything makes me sick

Meh.

Ohio Stadium is a historical landmark with great architecture and a lot of character. Its double deck, horseshoe shape was an original and iconic stadium design that was ahead of its time in terms of grandeur and seating capacity.

Michigan Stadium is a hole in the ground with bleachers around it. Literally. They've tried to make it less hole-in-the-groundish recently with new additions but it will always just be a hole in the ground with bleachers no matter how much lipstick they put on the pig.

It really doesn't bother me that they can squeeze a few more bleachers into their hole in the ground than we can into our monument of a stadium.

Another wonderful contribution from gene :roll1:

If you want to expand, save up and make another deck above the south island. Don't ruin the shape and nickname of the stadium.

Maybe save up for some permanent stadium lighting while you're at it.

Reading is tech!

Plans were approved last year to add permanent field lighting to Ohio Stadium, a $2 million project. Smith said it has yet to be determined whether that project will take place in 2014 or 2015. The Buckeyes will play two night games in the stadium this season, for which temporary lighting will be used.

Nonsense I say just add another deck all the way around. My tickets my junior year were in the back row of the stadium and due to how its built i still felt pretty close. We could go 1 deck higher

It would have to be a huge addition to claim the #1 spot. U-M is only half-done on their expansion project, it will eventually top 122,000. (Mock up from an MGo poster based on comments from Dave Brandon in 2011).

How they did the south stands is kind of odd. They really did do "two decks" with it, but instead of actually putting the second above the first, they just stuck it directly behind. If they would have stuck that second half above it like a true second deck, there would probably be at least a few hundred extra seats in the first deck.

Another addition they could do would encroach on the rotunda towers, but wouldn't close them over. They can still expand the two sections on either side of the towers for a few hundred extra seats as well. However, an additional deck on the south stands would probably be the least controversial idea and add the most seats.

Don't add to the south end zone

That "rendering" of the stadium looks like they just stacked metal stands around their stadium to make it taller. Really, they have the money and could do so much better, maybe even add a little class to it rather than just get as many seats as you can for the money.

I agree, and what they are proposing would really take away from the shape. I also feel adding another deck to the south end zone would take away a little from the iconic shape. In order the keep the horseshoe shape distinct the south end zone infill needs to be visually smaller than the rest of the stadium and separated. If they want to add on, build another deck to the east sideline to mirror the boxes on the west sideline. Could be another 3-4000 seats. If you want to go big, take another deck on all the way around (except the south end zone and the north entryway) which would be a VERY expensive way to add another 10-20,000 seats and jump to #1 (temporarily).

2,500-seat addition to Ohio Stadium in 2014 that will cost an estimated $9 mill

The renovation works out to $3,600 a seat. With the 9-game B1G schedule coming up in a few years, we'll average just over 7 home games a season. Not sure what the prices for those sections are, but using $65 a ticket we'll need around 55 home games to recoup the cost...of course, that's not counting concession sales from those extra 2,500 fans. Should be able to recoup the renovation cost by the end of the decade.
