Bob Hunter commentary: Time of essence in tradeoff for exposure

Saturday, October 6, 2007 11:09 PM
By Bob Hunter

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? Eighty-three percent of the nation was supposed to receive the Purdue-Ohio State game tonight, enough to start the exposure meter spinning. It means that almost as many impressionable young athletes had a chance to watch the Buckeyes and the Boilermakers as they did The Office or Saturday Night Live.
There are tradeoffs, however. Yesterday, the Buckeyes had to check out of their hotel rooms by noon so the Saturday night crowd could check in.
Let's see, check out at noon ... game time at 8 p.m., uh, hey, guys, have any of you ever seen the Tippecanoe Battlefield?

Purdue looking for complete performance

By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Purdue went into the game against Ohio State last night bent on rewriting what had been a tale of two teams the previous three weekends.

The Boilermakers outscored Central Michigan, Minnesota and Notre Dame 78-3 in the first half and were outscored 69-45 in the second half of the three victories.
"The first half of the last few games we showed how good we can be," defensive end Cliff Avril said. "Now our goal is to show we can put two halves together."

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The question has been out there for a few weeks now, and after Ohio State hammered Purdue last night, all of the nagging voices increased in volume.

Are the unbeaten Buckeyes really this good?
Unfortunately, it's a cousin to those "what is the meaning of life?" questions designed to torture students in a philosophy class, one that just can't provide a clear, convincing answer.

Buckeyes make statement on road

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Sunday, October 07, 2007

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? The television networks keep insisting on broadcasting Ohio State games in prime-time, but their ratings may start to suffer unless opponents can provide a little more drama.
Quarterback Todd Boeckman threw two touchdown passes, Ryan Pretorius kicked three field goals and a relentless defense shut down the Big Ten's most prolific offense in a 23-7 victory over Purdue Saturday night.
The Boilermakers, who finished with just four rushing yards, didn't tread inside the OSU 40-yard line until the final two minutes, scoring against a mixture of subs and starters with 10 seconds left.

OSU NOTES
Purdue misfires on fourth-down gamble

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Sunday, October 07, 2007

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? Purdue had displayed some offensive swagger while throttling its first five foes this season, leading the Big Ten in scoring and total yards.
But on a fourth-down gamble in the first half against Ohio State, quarterback Curtis Painter and his mates couldn't muster enough firepower to pick up a measly three feet.
Trailing 17-0 with 4:55 to go in the second quarter, the Boilermakers chose not to go toe-to-toe with the Buckeyes on fourth-and-1 from the OSU 40-yard line. Painter instead tried a screen pass, was hurried by linebacker Marcus Freeman on a blitz and misfired to running back Kory Sheets.

Miller's Mic: Defense wins championships

By By Dee Miller

Sunday, October 07, 2007

All this week we have heard Saturday's game against Purdue will be the Buckeyes' biggest test.
We had the Big Ten's No. 1 defense (Ohio State) going against the No. 1 offense (Purdue). Every since I began playing football with the Little Tigers, I've always heard defense wins championships.
A shutout through the first half was proof of the Buckeyes' dominance.
Each week, Buckeyes quarterback Todd Boeckman continues to impress me. On Saturday his touchdown pass to Ray Small couldn't have been more perfect.

No. 4 OSU shuts down No. 23 Purdue

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - They rolled out the lights, staged a big fan promotion, and had the atmosphere close to a frenzy here last night when the Ohio State Buckeyes came to town.

For unbeaten Purdue, this was going to be the signature conquest, the game that elevated the Boilermakers into the national spotlight.

If they could take down the two-time defending champions of the Big Ten, the Boilermakers would jump up the ladder in the national rankings, put themselves in a position of strength in the conference race, and be 6-0 for the first time since World War II.

Boilermakers baffled by Buckeyes ?D'

Purdue falters in showdown with Ohio State

By Stacy Clardie

The Journal Gazette

WEST LAFAYETTE ? Quarterback Curtis Painter wasn?t particularly sharp.
Top receiver Dorien Bryant only caught two passes and was smothered on both. He finished with negative 4 yards.
The running game amassed only four yards.
Fourth-ranked Ohio State?s defense was so good, No. 23 Purdue hardly resembled one of the nation?s best offenses Saturday in a 23-7 loss at Ross-Ade Stadium.

OHIO STATE 23, PURDUE 7
Ohio State Buckeyes defeat Purdue Boilermakers

Sunday, October 07, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
West Lafayette, Ind. -- New look, same devastating defense, familiar result.
Ohio State started the game Saturday night with just three down linemen against the most daunting passing attack in the Big Ten, and the top defense in the conference throttled the top offense in the conference as the Buckeyes punished Purdue, 23-7.
"I don't think their offense had seen a defense like ours yet," OSU coach Jim Tressel said. "Our defense was flying around."

OHIO STATE INSIDER
Ohio State Buckeyes bottle up Purdue's Dorien Bryant

Sunday, October 07, 2007 Jon Nyatawa
Special to The Plain Dealer
West Lafayette, Ind. -- The career all-purpose yardage leader at Purdue amassed just 51 Saturday night.
Senior receiver Dorien Bryant, who has 5,066 yards in his career, rarely found any open space against the nation's second-best defense.
When it looked like he did, Ohio State players were quick to converge. They eliminated Bryant by being physical, Purdue coach Joe Tiller said.
"They were knocking him around physically," he said after the game. "It wasn't like we didn't try to throw the football to him. But certainly, the thing wasn't open and wasn't there like it was in the past."
Bryant was thrown to six times. Two passes were nearly intercepted, one was thrown too high and one was dropped; Bryant caught the other two, but lost a total of 4 yards.

AD Smith says prime-time games can be beneficial, but would prefer to limit number

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Saturday night's game against Purdue marked the second straight night game for Ohio State, and there is still one more to come - the Buckeyes will face Penn State at night in three weeks.
The exposure benefit is obvious, so OSU athletic director Gene Smith said he's willing to comply - to an extent. Smith said Saturday he doesn't foresee the Ohio State-Michigan game ever being played at night.
"I doubt it," he said. "I compromised last year (to a 3:30 p.m. start), and that was hard for me to do. I just don't see that. We're blessed enough with rich tradition, it's always going to have the ratings. I don't see a need to do that."

Buckeyes blast Boilermakers
OSU offense strikes early, defense does the rest in win over Purdue
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Sunday, Oct 07, 2007
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel must have spent the week teaching his team history the history of how Purdue usually plays the Buckeyes close or, in the case of 2004, even beats them.
The Buckeyes came out running and gunning as they dominated the Boilermakers from the start in a 23-7 victory. The Buckeyes' offense flashed some new elements after seemingly running the risk of looking predictable down the stretch run of the Big Ten Conference schedule. The newest wrinkles are wide receiver Ray Small, who is finally looking as if he's playing at full speed, and his running mate Brian Hartline (GlenOak).
Small caught six passes for 70 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown reception on which he showed some nifty footwork by successfully getting his left foot down inbounds with a Boilermaker defender on him. The Buckeyes followed that drive with another that ended with a 6-yard touchdown reception by Brian Hartline, who caught four passes for 61 yards.

No. 4 Ohio State 23, No. 23 Purdue 7
Boilers' offense blacked out
Nation's No. 2 defense smothers Purdue passing attack in Big Ten showdown

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Blackout turned into a wipeout.

Ohio State's speedy, smothering defense choked off Purdue's potent passing attack, handing the Boilermakers their 12th consecutive loss to a ranked team, 23-7.
The showdown between two unbeaten, nationally ranked Big Ten teams drew 65,497 to Ross-Ade Stadium, the largest since stadium reconstruction in 2003. Purdue fans were encouraged to wear all black to create a "blackout," but the crowd included a large contingent of red-clad Buckeyes supporters who saw their team remain in contention to play for a national title.

OSU spoils Painter?s showcase
By JOSHUA HUDSON Tribune Chronicle Assistant Sports Editor

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? This was supposed to be Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter?s chance to show the nation he?s a big-time quarterback. But the Ohio State defense made sure Painter?s statement was nothing more than a whimper.

Painter finished the game 31-of-60 for 268 yards and one touchdown. He was under pressure the entire night and never got into a rhythm.

??A lot of the teams that played Purdue didn?t really pressure the quarterback,?? Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis said. ??We kept disguising our defense and didn?t let him know where the pressure was coming from.??

Rebuilding? Not these Buckeyes

Ohio State employs familiar formula to ascend in polls

p1.boeckman.getty.jpg

Quarterback Todd Boeckman is in the unlikely position of leading a team that is in contention for the national title.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue's campus store sold some 4,000 glow-in-the-dark "Boiler Blackout" T-shirts in anticipation of Saturday night's clash with Ohio State. But under the lights of Ross-Ade Stadium, it was the scarlet and gray that dominated in front of the record 65,497 in attendance.
No. 23 Purdue wilted in the unseasonable Midwestern heat as the fourth-ranked Buckeyes rolled, turning what was billed as the first true test for the Big Ten's last remaining unbeatens into a 23-7 formulaic cakewalk.
