Actually I wasn't referring to Penn State. I was referring to Wisconsin and Iowa which I have a hard time seeing as true rivals. But now I see what you were saying, you see them as "temporary" rivals when they are good.
Correct I see every team in the Big Ten as a temporary rival other than Michigan. If a team is terrible for a stretch I have a hard time looking at them as a rival. Michigan is the only team for me that can go 3-9 and still feel like it's a huge game.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Penn State Nittany Lions' workout schedule Friday includes lifting weights and pull-ups, followed by an odd assortment of drills like pulling sleds and pushing around giant tractor-trailer tires in front of hundreds of fans.

The routine feels just as grueling as it sounds, receiver Brett Brackett said.

All for charity, though.

What started as a weightlifting event six years ago to raise money at Penn State for kidney cancer research has turned into a full-fledged philanthropic organization called "Uplifting Athletes" involving other football programs dedicated to fighting rare diseases.

"It's a grueling workout in general," said Brackett, head of Penn State's chapter. "The thing that makes it worthwhile is it's for charity, and the fans really seem to enjoy it."

Other chapters are now located at Maryland, Colgate, Boston College and even at Big Ten football rival Ohio State. Organizers say more chapters are in the works.

Bowman will wear #11 this year.

Penn State LB Bowman eager for fresh beginning in coming year

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Penn State's Navorro Bowman trudged up the field with hands on hips, sweat dripping from the soaked blue-and-white shirt bearing his new No. 11.

The last notable Nittany Lion linebacker to wear that number was LaVar Arrington, one of the best to ever play the position at Linebacker U.
Coincidence, Navorro?

"I just want to have a better season than last year, be a better player," Bowman said Friday with a chuckle. Arrington apparently had asked his friend and protege to switch from No. 18 to No. 11 this year.

"No. 11, that's just me," Bowman said. "I made a choice, and I'm going to rock with it."

Bad news, Big Ten opponents. After a troubling spring marred by a court appearance, it looks like the talented Bowman is back in head coach Joe Paterno's good graces.

Bowman burst in the spotlight last year with a team-leading 106 tackles and athletic play that reminded Penn State fans of Arrington. With fellow linebacker Sean Lee back after missing 2008 with a knee injury, Happy Valley could be home to one of the most dynamic linebacking duos in the country this season.

Of course, that's predicated on Bowman staying out of trouble.

The leading tackler for the Nittany Lions last season sat out the spring game in April after a judge ruled that he violated his probation. Bowman admitted, during a meeting with a probation officer, that he smoked marijuana in the offseason.

OL gives JoePa reason for concern

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Making sure star quarterback Daryll Clark stays protected is one of Joe Paterno's top priorities this season at Penn State.

It's no wonder the Hall of Fame coach said that the Nittany Lions' offensive line is his biggest concern less than a week into training camp.

Three solid starters are gone. The two returnees have been moved to new positions, and the candidates for the remaining jobs are inexperienced.

The last thing Paterno wanted to talk about at preseason media day Thursday was depth.

"First you got to get one line. We don't have one line yet. We don't have depth," Paterno said.

Paterno said the next three-plus weeks before the season opener Sept. 5 against Akron will be audition time to find "five guys that can stay healthy, provide some leadership on the offensive line."

Scout.com: Penn State Confirms Mauti Injury
"Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti (Mandeville, La.) will miss the 2009 season after suffering a serious knee injury in practice on Sunday.
"A sophomore, Mauti tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, according to Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, Penn State Director of Athletic Medicine. Mauti will have surgery within the next three weeks and rehabilitation will take approximately nine months, according to Sebastianelli.
"The 6-2, 231-pound Mauti played as a true freshman in 2008 and has a redshirt year available. He was expected to challenge for a starting assignment at linebacker."
PSU board: How does Mauti injury impact the team?
It obviously hurts PSU's depth at LB, but here are a few other ramifications:

1. Stupar gets a chance to step up.
2. Colasanti might not redshirt
3. Gbadyu may have to stay at LB rather than line up at DE
4. Could help PSU long run because Mauti would still have 3 years to play.
It certainly solidifies Hull as the unquestioned starter
Ouch.

This REALLY hurts.
It won't affect the team too much this year, it's next year that's the problem.
We lose Lee, Bowman (he's NFL bound) and Hull.
So next year we'll have 3 new LBs. Not to mention a true soph for QB. Yikes.
we'll be fine. sucks for the kid, but we'll get by. could be worse.

and please stop trashing Hull. the kid does everything asked of him and does it with pride. he gives his all in the classroom as well as on the field and that's the kind of kid we should celebrate here. so he's not an all-american, big deal. we've certainly had worse starting at MLB. i actually think he came on and played pretty well in the latter half of the season.

Two PSU defensive players questionable for season
Monday, July 27, 2009
By Ron Musselman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
CHICAGO --- Penn State could be without its projected starting cornerback and top backup defensive tackle when preseason practice starts Aug. 10.
Coach Joe Paterno said today at the Big Ten Conference's annual media days that redshirt junior defensive tackle Abe Koroma and senior cornerback A.J. Wallace are dealing with off-the-field issues.
Their lockers were cleared out earlier this month.
Asked if Koroma would be back, Paterno said: "I doubt if Koroma will be. He's got some personal problems."
As for Wallace, Paterno said: "There is some question. He cut some classes."
Koroma, 6 feet 3, 317 pounds, started four games last year and finished with 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Wallace, 6-1, 201, has appeared in 39 career games for the Nittany Lions, with six starts. He had 20 tackles a year ago.

Two PSU defensive players questionable for season
Say goodbye to Darrell Givens | NittanyWhiteOut

July 30, 2009

Remember when I picked Darrell Givens as the 46th most important player to Penn State’s success this year? Well, I was way out of the loop on that one. Turns out, Givens never qualified, and was going to go to prep school for a year to work out his issues.

Well, looks like even that was wishful thinking on our part. Apparently, Darrell Givens decided that the “scholar” part of scholar-athlete, that seems to only apply at Penn State these days wasn’t the crucial word. As such, he’s started to look at schools for which he’d be immediately eligible, including Florida. Rivals has the story, but only if you’ve got premium. You’ll remember, Givens originally de-comitted from Ohio State, citing favorability in our depth chart that could earn him more early playing time, and immediately after choosing Penn State, said he considered himself a potential starter, even as a true freshman. By choosing to skip out on his PSU commitment, it’s clear that Givens is a person who would prefer to take the easy way out, but I don’t begrudge him. It’s a decision that makes plenty of sense, from a personal standpoint. Sure, it’s extremely annoying from a Penn State point of view, but I can’t blame Givens for wanting to get into college football as soon as possible.

...

But let’s not turn this into a story of pride. The fact is that Givens was one of the prospects in last year’s class that we really, really needed. If you’ve been watching any Penn State football over the past decade, really, you’ll notice that the one position of continual weakness has been at cornerback. Givens came in with the same hype as Justin King and A.J. Wallace, both of whom, of course, never really lived up to expectations. But Givens could’ve been that anchor in the defensive backfield that Penn State really needed. Considering that Penn State didn’t recruit another highly touted CB last year, and hasn’t looked at too many this year, well, it seems the future of the position continues to be in limbo.

Big Ten Countdown - No. 3 Penn State
By Tony Gerdeman

Predicted Finish
10-2 (6-2)

Two-Cent Overview
The reigning first team All Conference quarterback returns with a 1,200-yard rusher but no starting receivers, save for the tight ends. A totally revamped offensive line returns two starters, but places them in new positions. The defense returns two starting tackles and three starting linebackers. Jobs are available in Happy Valley, but you?ll still need to be pretty talented to apply.

Schedule
Sep.05 Akron (W)
Sep.12 Syracuse (W)
Sep.19 Temple (W)
Sep.26 Iowa (W)
Oct.03 at Illinois (L)
Oct.10 Eastern Illinois (W)
Oct.17 Minnesota (W)
Oct.24 at Michigan (W)
Oct.31 at Northwestern (W)
Nov.07 Ohio State (W)
Nov.14 Indiana (W)
Nov.21 at Michigan State (L)

Goal
A National Championship?or maybe just an outright Big Ten Championship for a change.

Team Motto
?Where Co-Championships Happen?

Five Questions Looking For Answers
1. Can a rebuilt offensive line give the Spreag HD 2.0 time to do its thing?
2. Will these wide receivers be able to get open?
3. Will defensive coordinator Tom Bradley be able to find some pass rushers?
4. Will linebacker Sean Lee be inside or outside.
5. How much will this secondary struggle?

After last nights amazing crowd performance I took a look at our schedule...I noticed the we play them in November which a really good thing for us because of the rule not allowing night games in November...That should really take away some of their home field advantage...
