Game Thread Ohio State 30, Minnesota 7 (final)

Larry Grant is an interesting guy... he'll go long periods where u dont see him or hear about him... then he'll have like 3-4 plays in a quick span where he's getting sacks, TFLs, or interceptions... it's like he's a steaky defensive player... and when he makes a play it's always a disruptive play bhind the line of scrimmage

Russell was outstanding today... I just wish we'd see some more of Vernon Gholston and Rob Rose getting after the QB... it's not happening enough.. our Dline is applying pressure but it's slow pressure...the pocket always collapses, but it just takes a little long... not seeing too many guys just flat our beating there men with speed rushes or moves...

I think MN's offensive line is underrated, and has been for the last few years. I would give more credit to their line than their running backs the last few years (though they have had some very good RBs). The line is the strength of MN right now, and I thought our D-Line did ok.

Another thing I want to mention....

While Minny probably is just about even with a team like Colorado and maybe a notch behind Auburn (and yes I know they aren't Oregon and aren't Washington either), it seems to me that Ohio State, Cal and LSU (and they were down 9-7), were the only top 10 teams this weekend to take care of business.

USC really struggled with the same Washington team that Ohio State buried in the 2nd half only 2 short weeks ago.....

LSU was only up 10-9 at half but ran away with it in the 2nd...

Oklahoma choked away a 24-7 lead

Florida fought back from 14-0 down, but couldn't stop a freshman kicker from ripping their guts out in Gainesville...

WVU invented ways to turn the ball over and lost

Cal won. Impressive win against a very good Oregon team. They got it done.

Texas lost and was exposed. They might have some serious problems stopping Oklahoma next week. They can hope that Oklahoma stops itself like it did quite a bit in the 2nd half against Colorado. Loser is playing for the Cotton Bowl this week.

Ohio State stepped on Minny early and finished them off in the 2nd half just like they should have.

Wisconsin might not have a defense and maybe Iowa doesn't have an offense. Michigan State isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut, but they rolled up something around 550 yards of total offense.

Rutgers gave up over 200 yards rushing to Maryland. They were obviously very overrated.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ohio State showed last night that it was not content to simply sit back and hope that other highly ranked teams fell away. Being passive is not in the Buckeyes' makeup.
Instead, Ohio State is focused on going out and taking games, of grabbing that next rung on the ladder and pulling itself up.
That's what the Buckeyes did last night in the Metrodome, shaking off a so-so start with some bold play-calling and thwarting Minnesota 30-7.
Ohio State (5-0, 2-0) showed its aggressiveness first by pulling off a fake punt, then by going deep for a lightning-fast touchdown just before halftime to permanently seize momentum. Tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Todd Boeckman threw for 209 yards and two TDs.

Bob Hunter commentary: Avoiding a loss when others fall is big deal

Sunday, September 30, 2007 4:38 AM
By Bob Hunter

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MINNEAPOLIS -- The scores from around the country created a vivid image of the college football minefield that is as mystifying as it is dangerous.

No. 3 Oklahoma goes down to unranked Colorado. No. 7 Texas loses to unranked Kansas State. No. 13 Clemson falls to unranked Georgia Tech. No. 10 Rutgers gets dumped by unranked Maryland. No. 4 Florida is beaten by unranked Auburn.
It didn't seem possible that there would be a mine buried out there with Minnesota's name on it -- an empty shell-casing from the 1940s would be more appropriate -- but that's the treacherous nature of a minefield.
Ranked teams tiptoe through these "easy" games at their own risk. Who in their right mind would have predicted Colorado over Oklahoma?
"You hear stuff during the day and kind of realize what a crazy thing college football is," Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis said. "You definitely have to stay focused. ? Coming into this game, we realized how powerful (Minnesota's) offense is. You saw in the first half how good they really are. They're a good team, and for us to come in here and get a win is a huge accomplishment."

Ohio State defenders gang up on Minnesota's Duane Bennett on a first-half play.

THE PLAY

The 27-yard run by Chris "Beanie" Wells on third down from the Ohio State 6-yard line late in the first half. It got the Buckeyes off the hook and led to a lead-expanding third touchdown.
THE STAR

OSU receiver Brian Robiskie. His leaping catch over a defender in the end zone of a 52-yard Todd Boeckman pass produced the third TD, giving the Buckeyes a 20-7 halftime lead.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The game at hand

Short-attention-span synopsis: Night game doesn't keep Buckeyes from staying "up" late. Upsets galore dot the landscape, but Ohio State dodges that minefield, thanks to Beanie and a nasty Laurinaitis. Gophers break out new uniforms, break down just the same. The Twin Cities couldn't beat the Buckeyes even if they were triplets.
Pregame buzz: You mean there was some? OK, how about this -- considering Minnesota had the worst pass defense in the nation, there was talk that OSU would put up 12,478 yards through the air. The Buckeyes only came up 12,269 short.

Buckeyes might miss Metrodome

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Metrodome can get loud, James Laurinaitis says.
"When it gets packed, it's loud," said the Ohio State linebacker, a Minnesota native. "If you've ever been there for a Vikings game, it's crazy loud."
For Vikings games? Ouch. Truth hurts for University of Minnesota fans.
Last night was Ohio State's final game in the downtown bubble. Minnesota has broken ground for TCF Bank Stadium, an on-campus venue set to open for the 2009 season.

Former UA quarterback won't give up on Gophers

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Three years at Minnesota have yielded mop-up minutes in four games. This season, Mike Maciejowski stands fourth on a three-man depth chart at quarterback, and two of those above him are freshmen. He plans to graduate in December with a degree in business marketing.
Ask Maciejowski his plans for next year, though, and they don't include a job.
"I still want to play," he said before Minnesota played host to Ohio State last night in the Metrodome. "You know, with our offense, we run the quarterback a lot. You never know what's going to happen."

Saturday night all right for Buckeyes

Sunday, September 30, 2007 3:55 AM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MINNEAPOLIS -- Embrace the night.
That was Ohio State's motto going into a game against Minnesota last night, as well as going into the Big Ten season. For the first time, the Buckeyes are playing three conference games in prime time, all on the road, including two consecutive. Saturday's game at Purdue will start at 8 p.m.
Add an 8 p.m. kickoff at Penn State on Oct. 27 and Ohio State's 2007 season has become a fly-by-night operation. The Buckeyes' path is that much tougher because home stadiums always seem to be jumping more after the sun goes down.
"I think it's a good reminder for us that they did that because they thought people wanted to watch us," Tressel said. "Now, we've got to perform.

Tressel takes some chances on 4th down

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Sunday, September 30, 2007
MINNEAPOLIS ? Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is more likely to wear his perfectly coiffed hair in a perm than try many bold gambles during a game, but he called for one on the opening possession against Minnesota on Saturday and hit the jackpot.
On fourth-and-6 from the OSU 40-yard line, punter A.J. Trapasso zipped around right end for an 18-yard gain, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run by Chris Wells.

not worried about the sacks

In another thread I said... not too worried about the lack of sacks. I think against all the spread offenses and wrinkles from the spread, you can't have five guys going balls out toward the QB. The D is doing great against the bubble screens, screens, flanker laterals, end-arounds, etc. we're rushing the passer but thinking contain whatever $hit comes up.

Not worried.....

Still looking for better first-down play calling, though. Keeping things close to the vest is nice but other teams are stacking the box on first down. Do we need to worry? No. but show some confidence in Boeckman. Open it up just a wee little bit.

We'll need that against Wisky and Sparty.
