Working on their night moves

Buckeyes adjusting to their increasing prime-time exposure.

Ohio State junior tailback Maurice Wells considers himself a college football fan, which is why he likes playing in night games.
Although he has to deal with some nervous anticipation all day, Wells and the rest of the Buckeyes have few conflicts keeping them from seeing their peers in action.
"It gets us amped up and ready to go play our game," Wells said. "I definitely like to watch other games."
The Buckeyes will have more free afternoons than ever this season to do just that. They'll play three night games for the first time in their history, all in the next five weeks.

OSU leaves no time for dust clouds

Ten of the Buckeyes' last 12 touchdowns have come on drives that took 1:42 or less off the clock.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State was expected to rely on a clock-munching, ball-hogging offense this year, but the football team instead has shown a knack for reaching the end zone with very little time elapsing.
Minnesota also tends to have short possessions ? but for all the wrong reasons.

MINNESOTA NOTES
Gophers tough in second half

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Saturday, September 29, 2007

First-year University of Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster may need to polish up his pregame pep talks, but his halftime speeches seem to be hitting home.
The Gophers (1-3) have staged furious rallies in all three of their losses. They trailed Bowling Green 21-0 before falling 32-31 in overtime. They spotted Florida Atlantic a 35-14 halftime lead on the way to a 42-39 loss. And they let Purdue storm to a 24-3 advantage but outscored the Boilermakers 28-21 after intermission.

I like to see quick strikes as well as anyone but I think that a team has to have the ability to run the ball in a time consuming drive, to knock some heads and wear em down with weight. We haven't played against a top D yet and we may find that Todd doesn't the time to pass that he gets now. Just look what SF's D did to WV last night. That game reminded me of a game last January which shall remain nameless for the pain it produces.
Having said that, tonight we can score as many points as we want to. As JT says , you have to take what the D gives you and do the things that your players can do. I would love to see a 14 play no pass drive once a game. As I chuckle I am reminded of....

Big gainers

Saturday, September 29, 2007 5:44 AM

Through four games, Ohio State has 18 plays of at least 20 yards. And they've been consistent, with at least four long plays per game. Compare that with the 2006 team, which had 14 such plays at this point, despite featuring a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback and more experienced skill players. A look at this season's big plays (scoring plays in capital letters):

RUNS (nine)
  • 20, Chris Wells (Youngstown State)
  • 23, Chris Wells (Washington)
  • 24, Chris Wells (Akron)
  • 25, Chris Wells (Akron)
  • 26, Maurice Wells (YSU)
  • 28, Brandon Saine (Washington)
  • 36, CHRIS WELLS (Northwestern)
  • 37, SAINE (Washington)
  • 40, Chris Wells (Akron)

Ohio State tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells leaves the Northwestern defense in the dust on his 36-yard touchdown run in the first half last week.

Maybe Minnesota will be the first Ohio State opponent to figure it out: The Buckeyes like to throw deep. A lot.
Maybe the Gophers are so bad that it won't matter. That will be decided tonight in the Metrodome.
But what's already apparent this season is that reports of Ohio State returning to grind-it-out football were greatly exaggerated.

Rob Oller commentary: If you can't keep 'em from scoring, tough luck

Saturday, September 29, 2007 3:52 AM
By Rob Oller

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Catching Ohio State coach Jim Tressel off guard happens less frequently than finding shoppers at Columbus City Center.
So imagine the surprise when Tressel appeared confused and annoyed after last week's 58-7 win over Northwestern when a reporter asked why he would pass up a field goal attempt and go for it on fourth-and-1 while leading by 35 points in the first half.
"Oh, because we want the touchdown? ? I don't know what to tell you," Tressel said, slightly irritated that someone would suggest he was trying to run up the score.

Wheelwright is go-to guy on Minnesota's offense

Saturday, September 29, 2007 3:33 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The measurables made Ernie Wheelwright a factor from day one at Minnesota.
A lanky, long-striding gazelle, it was not difficult for him to gain separation from defenders. And if they caught up, he, at 6 feet 5, could simply go over them to catch the football.
His first three receptions in 2004, as a redshirt freshman, went for touchdowns. One covered 42 yards; another, 80. For the season, he averaged 21.8 yards per catch, best in the Big Ten.

OSU notebook: Turnovers at root of Gophers' poor start

Saturday, September 29, 2007 3:33 AM
By Tim May

The Columbus Dispatch

Looking at the statistics, something is askew tonight going into the Ohio State-Minnesota game.
Ohio State has the Big Ten's No. 1 defense with fewest yards allowed (177.8 average) and fewest points allowed (7.2). Minnesota has the second-best rushing offense (229.8-yard average) and total offense (487.5).
Yet Ohio State is undefeated (4-0, 1-0) and ranked eighth in the country while Minnesota (1-3, 0-1) could be winless at this point, its only victory coming in triple overtime against Miami University.

I see the defense creating a lot of turnovers tonight. And I don't think that there is much doubt that we are going to put up big points.

I know the concern for injury, but I want to see C. Wells run it more than 12 times. I'd like to see him get at least 20 carries.
