Ohio State's Jamario O'Neal, top, and Tyler Moeller team up to stop Northwestern's Sherrick McManis.

If you're looking for a phrase to sum up the Todd Boeckman to Brian Robiskie connection, borrow one from Purdue coach Joe Tiller and just call it "basketball on grass."
The two hooked up for three touchdown passes in the first 16 minutes yesterday of Ohio State's 58-7 thumping of Northwestern in Ohio Stadium. On the third, especially, they made it look easy, Boeckman rolling right and flipping a 19-yard lob to an open Robiskie in the end zone.
"It is always nice when you see a guy wide open like that; you don't want to miss him," Boeckman said. "Coach always says, 'Don't miss the layup.' I don't think we did that today, so it was really nice."

Facts of the matter

Northwestern talked all week about getting off to a better start after falling behind Duke 20-7 and Nevada 24-10 the previous two weeks. "We changed up practice (to elicit that)," coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "Obviously, it didn't have the impact we had hoped."
Shining moment

Five-foot-8 Stephen Simmons bounced away from a couple of would-be tacklers to return the second-half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. It was the freshman's first kickoff return in a college game. In his bio on Northwestern's Web site, Simmons said his ultimate SportsCenter highlight would be "scoring the winning touchdown against Ohio State." He'll have to be content with scoring the only one.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The game at hand

Short-attention-span synopsis: Ohio Stadium or Roman Coliseum? By the end, Wildcats were begging for a running clock. Woody woulda loved it. The only scary moment was Beanie's boo-boo.
Pregame buzz: It was supposed to be a blowout even if Wildcats tailback Tyrell Sutton played. When Sutton sat out because of a sprained ankle, well, let's just say there is bad and there is worse and then there is Northwestern.

COACH TRESSEL: Well, we got off to a great start obviously, and we talked a little bit about the fact that the game takes a little bit of a change with that kickoff being moved back to the 30, and all of a sudden we had a nice return and we're out there in free-wheeling zone and had a chance to go after them with a couple things. And that first touchdown was something that Darrell (Hazell) and Joe Daniels and Bolls came up with during the week and they really felt like they brought their secondary in to support the run and we gave them a nice play action, we might be able to run by them and that got us off to a great start. And then really the defense took over and created unbelievable field position and our punt returns were very solid. Our kickoff coverage was very good except for one, and I'm not sure, about four guys didn't hit him on that play, he just stayed on his feet and coming up with a blocked punt with Larry Grant was huge and so it was a decisive win that hopefully we can go back and learn a great deal from.

1st: pitch left to Beanie for 7.

2nd: Tank is in at fullback. strong right, slot right. straight ahead for one.

3rd: TD to Robo from 28 yards out. it was an ace set, strong right, three WR right, but one WR was in the 'shot-Ginn.' i haven't seen that formation before. edit: i must have made a mistake on the formation. Robo was lined up left.

XP is good.

Buckeyes are looking GOOD.

clarification: there was no tight end on that play.

This may have been discuessed when it happened but I haven't seen subsequent talk of this: What do people think of the new punt formation we used today? I could be wrong, but haven't we always used traditional punt formation until today, when we used that more spread out look?

they used it the last couple weeks. i do NOT like it.

Buckeyes tame Wildcats to open Big Ten play

COLUMBUS (AP) - This game cried out for a mercy rule in the Big Ten. Todd Boeckman tossed three touchdown passes to Brian Robiskie in the first half to lead eighth-ranked Ohio State, scoring early and often, past Northwestern 58-7 on Saturday.
Just about everything went wrong for the Wildcats (2-2), who trailed 28-0 after the opening 91?2 minutes and 45-0 at the half. The Buckeyes (4-0) could've had their starters leave after two quarters for some tailgating outside the Horseshoe, which was hosting its 500th game. "What do you do when you get such a decisive lead? You work on things," Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said when asked about the rapidly mounting score. "But you still want the quarterback to throw to the open guy and if the open guy happens to be the deep guy you throw it to him. So, no, once we got to 45 did we start calculating how could we get to 90? No. But you want to do what you can do."

OSU offense quick, efficient in big win
By DEVIN SHULTZ
Staff Writer

COLUMBUS - The efficiency of Ohio State's offense in the first half Saturday was comparable to what a video game enthusiast would do with a PlayStation 3 controller in his hand. In the lopsided 58-7 victory over Northwestern, the Buckeyes' first four offensive drives went for touchdowns, needing only 14 plays and 4 minutes and 23 seconds - or roughly three plays and 66 seconds per score.
Add in senior defensive lineman Vernon Gholston's 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown midway through the opening quarter, and that created a comfortable 35-0 cushion for the Scarlet and Gray with only 58 seconds of the second quarter clock elapsed

Boeckman and Buckeyes rout Northwestern 58-7

The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- It took 95 years for Ohio State to play 500 games at Ohio Stadium -- and less than two quarters to put up 45 points against Northwestern.
Todd Boeckman tossed three touchdown passes to Brian Robiskie in the first half to lead the eighth-ranked Buckeyes past the Wildcats 58-7 on Saturday.
Just about everything went wrong for the Wildcats (2-2) in the first half. The Buckeyes (4-0) could've had their starters leave at halftime for some tailgating outside the Horseshoe. They've won 15 straight at home.

'Bouta week late for my prediction but this whoopin' is what I've expected all year... Large in part due to the competition; but this team will do us proud! Geez! The "D" is as stout as I could hope for.... Oh, the "O" can accomplish as well....

REPORTER: Coach, I don't know how you're going to pick a Jack

Tatum hit of the week this week, a whole bunch of them.

COACH TRESSEL: A couple of them.

REPORTER: I wonder if that's intrinsic upon the team, did you get

that feeling on the side line as you were kind of pumping your fists, after

somebody gets a really big hit like that?

COACH TRESSEL: I'm not sure I know what intrinsic means.

REPORTER: Flowing.

COACH TRESSEL: Flowing?

REPORTER: Yeah, flowing through the team.

COACH TRESSEL: You know, I think it was intrinsic, guys jump up

and down and they get fired up with each other and all I care is that they

celebrate together, and I don't want them celebrating on the guy that got

whacked, but I love those vicious collisions and so forth, but we've got to

make sure we celebrate after the fact and then become intrinsic.

I love it when Coach T gets sarcastic....

I only got to watch most of the first half and a couple highlights but from what I saw here are some thoughts.
When we play a game like this I look for us to do things correctly. We should look great against a team like this and have no mistakes.
Todd to Robo works.
We have some serious people on kickoff returns. and not just one or two but 3 or 4. They want someone's head.
Congrats to Vernon on his TD. I love it when our linemen get to score. When it happens they all want to get one...
Grant is "da Man" on blocks.
Mo is a running back. He is running absolutely brilliant this year. Whether the O line gets him a hole or not he gets everything he can. And I can tell he WANTS the end zone.
The O line still needs work but they are getting better. Sooner or later someone will shut Robo down and then it will fall on the O line to produce.
I still love Chekwa, I still can't believe how close he covers and doesn't get PI calls. It has been a long time since we had a DB like him. Two weeks ago he had an Int if he had turned around, yesterday he turned around.
All in all a good game for us against the level of team we played
