Game Thread Ohio State 58, Northwestern 7 (final)

This Page at Stassen shows the individual result of all 57 wins, all 14 losses, and the scoreless tie in 1938. Where o-zone got their data is anybody's guess.

Agree its probably an error on the Ozone's part but maybe some games were played when one of us wasn't in the B10 or Western conf? Probably not but its just a thought for why they may be off.

That's exactly what I thought, Jax. That's why I went to that page at Stassen.

But OSU seems to have been 3-4 in the series outside of the data that the O-Zone have; and the series started with 5 straight wins by the Buckeyes. So unless one of the teams was in the conference and left and came back, I can't figure out what happened here.

Paging BB73...

EDIT:
A check of the Big 10 web-site reveals that Northwestern is an inaugural member of the conference (1895) and OSU has been a member since 1912. The first game between the two was in 1913.
EDIT II:
The teams played every year 1913-1917, and then not again until 1927. If someone noticed those first 5 games and then missed NU on the schedule in 1927-1933 (thereby omitting those games from the record), then the resulting record matches the O-Zone numbers.

Random numbers for the OSU-NU series...

The 33 points scored by Northwestern in the overtime loss in 2004 is their most ever against the Buckeyes, and their only single game total in excess of 28 points.

The 27 points scored in regulation time of that game is tied with their efforts in 1946 and 1989 for the 2nd most points ever against the Buckeyes in regulation (both double-digit losses for the Wildcats).

The Buckeyes average score against Northwestern is 27.14 points. The Wildcats have managed 9.32 ppg against OSU.
Since 1973 (inclusive) the average score is 42.54 - 10.88
The only time the Wildcats exceeded 27 points in this series (in regulation) was in their 40-28 loss in 1982.

Apart from the games already mentioned, Northwestern has scored 20 or more points against the Buckeyes on the following occasions:
  • 1948 - 21 points
  • 1952 - 21 points
  • 1958 - 21 points
  • 1968 - 21 points
  • 1978 - 20 points
  • 2001 - 20 points
Northwestern is 3-7 in the series when scoring 20 or more points.

The debacle in 2004 was the only time the Buckeyes have lost to Northwestern when scoring more than 14 points.

.
.

Woody scored more than 30 points on NU 8 times.
Woody scored less than 30 points on NU 14 times.

Earle scored less than 30 points on NU once, the 16-7 victory in his first season as HC.

Cooper scored less than 30 points on NU once, a 17-15 victory in 1994.

Jim Tressel has scored less than 30 points on NU 3 times in the last 5 games.

.
.
.
NU has scored more than 20 points on OSU 8 times.

OSU has scored more than 50 points on Northwestern 11 times (for those who are mathematically challenged, the Buckeyes won all of those games).

Re: I can help you MidvaleReplyIt is a tall order, but OSU's offense is no better than ours. Yes, their defense is everything you say, but seeing how our kickers have performed to date I suspect special teams can make the difference in NU's favor. Look for at least two defensive scores (OSU's offense is still learning how to hold onto the ball and their QB has proven he is not horribly accurate when he throws. I still say NU by a field goal. (And it would be poetic justice if our final play follows a time burning drive in which CJ takes a knee.)

Let's see...the Northwestern offense that lit up Duke for 14 whole points at home is as good as the Buckeye offense that put 30 on Washington in the second half on the road. And I guess I forgot all those turnorvers we had in Seattle...damn that tailgate party for getting me so drunk.

One of his other claims was that their defense would have "at least" two scores. Are we to believe that the Wildcat defense will score as many points on Ohio State as their offense managed against Duke?

Fascinating stuff...

I read yesterday he isn't 100% and whether or not he will play is up in the air on one of their message boards

If thats the case, and it could very well be with a high ankle sprain, they better rest him. They aren't going to win regardless and NU needs him the rest of the season. If they can somehow get 4 B10 wins they can go Bowling. Thats what Fitz needs to be looking at.
