      COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman shortstop Zach Dezenzo was named a 2019 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, powered by Diamond, the newspaper announced Wednesday morning. Dezenzo, from Alliance, Ohio, becomes the 17th Freshman All-American in Ohio State baseball history and the first since Ronnie Dawson and Tanner Tully in 2014.

      Dezenzo, who was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, powered 10 homers, the second-most by a Big Ten freshman this past spring. He became the first Buckeye freshman to launch 10 homers in a season in 18 years (Doug Deeds, 14; 2001). The OSU shortstop was a starter in the Buckeye lineup since Opening Day, getting the nod in 58 games, including 41 starts at shortstop and 17 starts at third base. He tallied 54 hits and scored 25 runs, while driving in 37 with nine doubles and one triple. Dezenzo had two multi-homer games, collecting a total of 13 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI contests.

    Re: The Ohio State University Board of Trustees has approved a three-year contract extension for head baseball coach Greg Beals that will keep him in the dugout as head coach of the Buckeyes four more seasons and at least through the 2023 baseball season.

      COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior left-handed pitcher Andrew Magno was named a third team All-American by Baseball America Monday afternoon. Magno, from Dublin, Ohio, becomes the 52nd All-American in Ohio State history. Magno is the second Buckeye pitcher to be named an All-American in the last two years (Seth Kinker, 2018).

      Magno, the Big Ten Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, was magnificent during his junior season in leading a young Buckeye bullpen to a Big Ten Tournament championship and NCAA Regional appearance. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, Magno made a team-high 31 appearances posting a 5-3 record and a 2.09 ERA, the lowest ERA among B1G pitchers. Magno tallied the second-most saves in the conference with 14, which ranks seventh on the OSU single-season saves list. He limited opposing hitters to a .205 average with 75 strikeouts in 64.2 innings pitched.


      Last week, Magno was taken in the 15th round by the Detroit Tigers in the 2019 MLB Draft.

      Other nuggets on Magno:

      • Guided the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Tournament title after recording four saves during the team’s championship run in Omaha, including two saves on championship Sunday. He allowed no runs in 9.2 scoreless innings of relief, working 3.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts in the B1G title game vs. Nebraska in front of more than 17,000 fans at TD Ameritrade Park.
      • Named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in the Nashville Regional, throwing a career-high 7.1 innings of relief with a career-high 12 strikeouts in the win over McNeese June 1. His postseason performance tied for the most strikeouts by a relief pitcher this season.
      • Also fanned an impressive 11 hitters in 4.0 innings of relief at Maryland April 20.
      • Appeared in 51 career games with 88 strikeouts in 73.2 innings pitched.
      • Helped the Buckeye pitching staff break the school record for strikeouts in a season (583).

      COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior outfielder Dominic Canzone was named a third team Perfect Game/Rawlings All-American, the website announced Wednesday morning. Canzone, from Sagamore Hills, Ohio, becomes the 53rd All-American in Ohio State history. Canzone is the second Buckeye to be named an All-American in 2019. Andrew Magno was named a third team selection by Baseball America earlier this week.

      Canzone was taken in the 8th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2019 MLB Draft last week. A 2019 First Team All-Big Ten selection, served as Ohio State’s starting right fielder the last three seasons, playing in 172 career games with 162 career starts. Canzone became one of the top lead-off hitters in the country in 2019, reaching base in a program-record 59-consecutive games (second-longest active streak in the nation). Canzone led the Big Ten in hits (88), runs scored (66), slugging percentage (.620) and total bases (158). A 2019 team captain, Canzone was the regular-season batting champion in league games with a .374 average. Canzone also slugged a season-high 16 homers and 18 doubles. A three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Canzone started in all 63 games in right field for the Scarlet and Gray, guiding the team to a Big Ten tournament title and NCAA Regional appearance. Canzone, a Big Ten All-Tournament Team selection batted .345 (88-for-255) and recorded a team-high 25 multi-hit games this spring.


      Other nuggets on Canzone:

      • One of six players in the country with at least 60 runs scored, 80 hits and 15 homers in 2019.
      • One of two players in Ohio State history with at least 200 career hits, 20 career homers, 100 career RBI and 30 career stolen bases (228/23/114/37).
      • 88 hits in 2019 ranks seventh in OSU single-season history.
      • 66 runs scored ranks sixth in OSU single-season history.
      • 228 career hits ranks 14th in OSU history in just three seasons.
      • Three-time All-Big Ten selection (third team in 2017 and second team in 2018).

      COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State redshirt freshman pitcher Seth Lonsway was named a 2019 Second Team Freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the organization announced Monday afternoon. From Celina, Ohio, Lonsway becomes the 18th Freshman All-American in Ohio State baseball history and the second this spring (Zach Dezenzo, 2019; Collegiate Baseball).


      Lonsway, a third team All-Big Ten selection, was the Division I leader in strikeouts by a freshman this spring (126). He led all Big Ten pitchers in strikeouts and batters struck looking, becoming the first Buckeye to hit the 100-strikeout mark in a single-season in 10 years. Lonsway went 8-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 17 starts in 92.1 innings pitched. Lonsway limited opposing hitters to a .214 batting average and led the conference in strikeouts in league games (71). He became the first Buckeye to tally at least 10 strikeouts in four outings in one season since Alex Wimmers had seven double-digit strikeout performances in 2009. Lonsway helped the Buckeye pitching staff break the school record for strikeouts in a season (583).
