Three Buckeye home runs powered the team to its first win of 2016.
Behind the power of the longball, Ohio State baseball got the 2016 season started in the win column, defeating Toledo 7-1 at the Historic Dodgertown Classic in Vero Beach, Florida.
Jacob Bosiokovic, Jalen Washington, and Troy Mongtomery all homered for the Buckeyes, and starter Tanner Tully threw six shutout innings as the scarlet and gray got its third straight Opening Day win.
After Tully retired the side in the top of the first, Bosiokovic ripped a hanging breaking ball from Toledo starter Steven Calhoun over the corner in left field to put Ohio State on the board. It was a good sign for the Delaware, Ohio native, a redshirt junior after missing most of last season due to Tommy John surgery.
In the bottom of the second, the Buckeyes loaded the bases against Calhoun, and a wild pitch brought home senior designated hitter Zach Ratcliff for the second run of the game.
Tully continued to cruise, allowing six hits through his six innings of work, striking out three and walking just one.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bosiokovic singled and came around to score on a bunt single by senior third baseman Nick Sergakis thanks to a throwing error by Toledo's Brad Boss. Then Washington stepped to the plate and smacked his first career home run, a two-run shot to left off Rocket reliever Casey Johnson, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Ohio State continued to flex its muscles in the bottom of the sixth. After a single to lead things off by L. Grant Davis, Montgomery got in on the longball action, sending a pitch over the wall in right field for a 7-0 lead.
Redshirt sophomore Austin Woodby, who transferred to the Buckeyes from Cincinnati, relieved Tully. In his debut in scarlet and gray, the Springboro, Ohio product set Toledo down in order in the top of the seventh.
The Rockets were able to break up the shutout, though, thanks to a solo homer by right fielder A.J. Montoya in the top of the eighth off Woodby, but it was all they could muster. He set them down in order in the ninth to record the save.
Ohio State pounded out a total of 11 hits, with Bosiokovic leading the way with a 3-for-5 day and scoring two runs. Calhoun took the loss for Toledo, giving up four runs in 4.2 innings.
The Buckeyes will play a pair of games on Saturday, starting at 2:30 p.m. ET against Niagara. The nightcap will come at 6:00 p.m. ET against Pittsburgh.
