The Ohio State football banquet was held on Saturday and to the surprise of no one linebacker A. J. Hawk was named the 2005 MVP.
"It's a fitting tribute to a great player,' said OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel.
Hawk seemed genuinely moved by the honor which came to him via a vote of his teammates.
"You always want to be accepted by your peers and something like that is honestly an honor," said Hawk.
"I didn't really expect it. We have so many guys who could have gotten that. It's an honor and I'm glad to get some respect from my teammates," Hawk said.
Among the others receiving awards at the Banquet were senior co-captain Nate Salley who received the Bo Rein Most Inspirational Player award. Senior running back Brandon Schnittker received the John W. Galbreath Award for Academic Excellence.
Troy Smith was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player while Mike Kudla was named the MVP on defense. The Jim Marshall Warrior Award was won by Anthony Schlegel.
Freshman offensive lineman Alex Boone was named the top first-year offensive player, and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins the top newcomer on defense.
The Ike Kelley award for special teams was shared by Josh Huston and Ted Ginn Jr., and Donte Whitner was awarded the Arnie Chonko Award as OSU's top defensive back.
Troy Smith was named the winner of the W. W. Hayes Award as the top player in the Michigan game. Smith also won the Archie Griffin award while Antonio Pittman picked up the Rex Kern award.
The Jim Parker award for the top offensive lineman was shared by Nick Mangold and Robbie Sims.

"It's great to win that award, and what makes it even better is that Robbie and I were able to share that award," said Mangold.
"I was thinking about it and if I had won that award and he didn't, that's just not right because anything that I was able to do was made possible because I had him next to me, so I was real happy to see that they gave it to both of us."
Santonio Holmes took home the Paul Warfield award as OSU's top receiver, and defensive linemen Marcus Green and Quinn Pitcock shared the Jack Stephenson Award for OSU top interior defensive lineman

Top Interior Lineman: Patterson/Pitcock

What kind of award is this? They awarded the two starters who qualify for the category. They both had a good, solid year, on a line that played much better than I had predicted. But when an award has two candidates and they share for the lead is like awarding USC and Texas the national championship this year.

Ok - not quite the same, since Patterson and Pitcock weren't competing against each other. But I think I've made my point.

Nice find, SP. It's pretty cool to see the team recognize the players.
