The Lady Buckeyes have kicked off the 2016 softball season by starting with a 5-3 record. They won 3 of 4 in the LSU Tournament beating North Florida, Pacific and Connecticut, while losing to the host Tigers of LSU.

They then participated in the ACC-B1G Challenge and split 4 games - sweeping Georgia Tech and being swept by Syracuse.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Another day, another pair of wins for the Ohio State softball team in South Carolina. Following a 9-1 win this morning against Morehead State, the Buckeyes (9-3) came back to top Virginia Tech for the second time in 24 hours in the nightcap to pick up their fourth straight win.

Ohio State won a six-inning contest against Morehead State by scoring five time in the fifth inning and then broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning against Virginia Tech with a two-run Taylor White double to top the Hokies, 6-5, at USC Upstate's Cyrill Stadium.

Funny story: On my phone, I get alerts about OSU sports. I got "Ohio State wins 6-5..." and then minutes later I got the same thing (the message gets truncated on my home screen). So I think I need to go in a eliminate duplicates again (it's been a problem in the past) only to learn that the Lady Bucks won their softball game 6-5 and minutes later the OSU men's hockey team beat Whisky 6-5.

    Lady Bucks denied the sweep

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Shelby Hursh dueled with USC Upstate's Holly McKinnon pitch for pitch, but a two-run home run by the Spartans' Brittany Case proved to be the difference as Ohio State (9-4) dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision on Sunday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.

Hursh tossed six innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven. McKinnon was equal to the task, however, as she gave up five hits and recorded her second complete game of the season. Both pitchers came into the game with a sub-2.00 ERA.

Still finished 4-1 in SCar and that is good.

H&G: I have to agree. The best info I can find is on the official site. They do a pretty good job of recapping, etc, but not so much with previews, etc.

OSU opens the tournament against a very tough James Madison squad. The Duchesses are 17-1 on the season. Their only loss so far has been to Alabama (see OSU isn't the only one).

Next up is the Lady Hoyas from Georgetown. They are currently 5-11. The streaky Hoyas started the season 2-11 (including a 7 game losing streak) but have won their last 3 against Maryland, Robert Morris and Columbia.

The 3rd game of the series will pit the Buckeyes against conference foe Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are sitting at 12-4 on the year.

They wrap up the series with a game again the host Arizona State Sun Devils. The Lady Devils are 18-5. They started the year winning their first 6. After a loss to Kentucky they won their next 5 (including 5-2 over Michigan State). Another 5 game win streak followed and was stopped by Minnesota in surprising fashion, 10-1. The Lady Devils have somewhat come back to earth having split their last 6.

This will be a tough test for the Buckeyes. Their opponents have a combined record of 52-21, a .712 winning percentage. Taking away Georgetown and they are 47-10 (.825). A split will be great. Anything above that and we should be thrilled.

Buckeyes fall to James Madison 7-4

Taylor Newton went 2-3 with a home run and drove in 3 as the James Madison Duchesses defeated the Lady Bucks 7-4 on Friday. Erica Leonard hit a HR and drove in 2 for the Lady Bucks. Jailyn Ford pitched 4 innings in relief and picked up the win. Shelby McCombs gave up 4 runs in 1 1/3 innings for the loss. The Buckeyes fell to 9-5 on the season.

    Lady Bucks down Georgetown

The middle of Ohio State's order -- Alex Bayne, Cammi Prantl and Leonard -- combined to go eight-for-12 with three RBI and four runs scored as the Buckeyes broke open a close game with five runs over the final three innings to earn a 8-4 victory in their second game on Friday.

Leonard, White and Emily Clark each drove in two runs while the combination of Morgan Ray and Hursh struck out eight Hoyas over seven innings. A three-run sixth inning was keyed by White's two-run double to straightaway center and a RBI single from Leonard. That made the score 7-3 and Ohio State never looked back from there.

    Nebraska slips by OSU

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Ohio State held a two-run lead against No. 23 Nebraska for much of the game but gave up three late runs in the sixth inning in a 5-4 loss to the Huskers on Saturday at Farrington Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University.

The Buckeyes (10-6) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning via back-to-back solo home runs. The shots came off the bats of seniors Cammi Prantl and Erika Leonard and landed in almost the exact same spots -- straightaway center field.

Pretty darn good weekend for the Lady Bucks. Probably not how they wanted it to go but they played well overall. Lost the opener to JMU, come back and even it out with a good win over Georgetown. Unfortunately dropped a heartbreaker to Nebby 5-4 in the 3rd one but got a huge victory in the last game over the Lady Devils to split the tourney. Showed a lot of promise and grit out there which bodes well for the season in my opinion. They are battling and have some talent. Good job ladies!!

Buckeyes gain split with upset of host ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. -- After battling a pair of ranked teams pitch for pitch in earlier games this weekend, Ohio State (11-6) broke through on Sunday and picked up a signature win of its early-season non-conference schedule. The Buckeyes scored nine times over the final two innings and defeated No. 18/21 Arizona State (21-7) 11-5 in their finale at the Louisville Slugger Invitational at Farrington Stadium in Tempe.

In a back-and-fourth contest, Ashley Goodwin's go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning gave Ohio State a 4-3 lead that it would never relinquish. The Buckeyes also put up a six sport in the top of the seventh to provide itself plenty of breathing room. Three pitchers -- starter Morgan Ray and relievers Shelby McCombs and Lena Springer -- combined to keep ASU's potent offense in check for the most part as the group limited the Sun Devils to just one run over the games first four innings.
