Game Thread Ohio State @ Maryland - 11/17/18, 12:00PM (ABC)

Waiting anxiously for the @Jaxbuck and @Bill Lucas stadium report....

Tailgate was fun. Jax and BN27 were great to meet and tailgate with.

Stadium was half empty or so it seemed. It looked like a Big 12 football game to me. The Maryland fans I met were great people and very welcoming. I haven't seen the replay but it appeared that the two point conversion pass was wide open and the QB missed the throw. A win is a win. Driving up to Columbus on Friday for The Game. I really don't know what to expect.

Let's talk 2018 B1G vs 2002 B1G. If you think the conference play is as consistently good as it was then, fine. I don't. I'm seeing sloppy football, multiple execution errors, OL play that's just weak, D play that's not just bad..... it's awful.

I'm arguing there was a time when the B1G held itself to a higher standards overall AND GOT THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT as having national contenders every year, when AL DOESN'T get the nod over us in the playoffs because the conference had the history and respect of the coaches, AP, Bowls, committees, etc.

I want that. Fuck the SEC...... we need more pride in and accountability for ourselves.

We have two teams on the verge of making the playoffs. Not sure what more you want. ESPN and the SEC are holding hands, thus the benefit of the doubt. How many southern people are on the CFP committee?

Ohio State has done more than its fair share over the years. If the Big Ten isn’t where it was in 2002, who was the other team outside of Ohio State with a shot at the NC?

I mean, I get it, but I don’t really believe in conference pride. Namely because I can’t stand our competition in the league for the most part. Tennessee fans might scream “SEC” when Bama wins, but Xichigan could lose tonight and I’d laugh.. even though it could ultimate be a bad thing for us.

It’s just different. If people want to complain about multiple successful seasons because we don’t win every game 100-0, that’s fine. We’ve had so many players head to the NFL and a few of them are the most successful players in the league. You can’t ask for much more than the dominance they’ve displayed.

I guess that this was actually the kind of game that it was (i.e. 52-51).

Mainly, I'd like to see good football again. If you think the MD game (or pretty much any game this season) that tOSU has played this year was good football just because we got the W in all but one, that's fine, but I disagree.

NFL players? Also, fine, but sloppy football is sloppy football. It's coaches, it's players, it's fans tolerating the holy search for "We won XXX games. We beat TTUN. We're good."

Yeah, well, I'm not a homer. I'd like to see tOSU be a team Woody would smile on...... not because they won the last game of the year but because they played some damn good football.

If you're okay with this year...... we'll agree to disagree.

Buckeyes Come Back in Bizarro Game at Maryland to Keep Championship Hopes Alive

DSC_7100-Edited.jpg

In what was one of the most bizarre football games you’ve ever seen the Ohio State Buckeyes (10-1, 7-1) rallied to take a 52-51 overtime win over Maryland (5-6, 3-5). In doing so they kept alive their hopes for a Eastern Division Big Ten championship, an overall Big Ten championship, and their slim chances of making the College Football Playoff.

The weirdness started early. Maryland scored on their second play from scrimmage on an 81-yard touchdown run by running back Anthony McFarland. The Terps then totally surprised the Buckeyes with an onside kick that they recovered to be in business with a first down at the 21-yard line. On the first play of the possession however Ohio State recovered a fumble to put out the fire. The OSU offense then moved a fourth and four at the Maryland 19 and the Buckeyes settled for a field goal to make it 7-3

It took just one play from scrimmage for Maryland to change the score when McFarland went 75 yards on the first play from scrimmage to make the score 14-3.

The Buckeye offensive game plan was to pound the ball on the ground with J. K. Dobbins. They had some success moving the ball but couldn’t be consistent enough to put points on the board. They finally did dent the goal line on a 75-yard pass from Dwayne Haskins to Terry McLauren to make it 17-10.

It looked like the Buckeyes had seized the momentum, but Maryland was not ready to lay down. They answered OSU’s touchdown with one of their own, this time on a nine-play 60 yard drive, all on the ground. The scoring play came on a 24 yard touchdown run.

The Buckeyes had come into the game favored by two touchdowns but found themselves down by 14. They cut the lead to seven again on the ensuing possession when Dobbins capped seven-play, 75-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run. The big play on the drive was a 38 yard completion from Haskins to McLauren that carried to two-yard line.

One again it looked like OSU had seized the momentum. The defense got a stop and the OSU offense came back on the field with a first down on their own 14 and 1:29 to work with. OSU drove quickly down the field to a first and goal at the seven with 40 second still remaining, but bizareness struck again when Dobbins fumbled near the goal line to end scoring threat.

The Buckeyes didn’t score, but they had moved the ball, and they were getting the second half kick off and a chance to keep the momentum they were establishing. It took just two plays for that thought to evaporate when Haskins threw a pick-six and OSU was once again down by 14 at 31-17.

The Buckeyes needed an answer and got it with a 74-yard drive that was capped by a bizarre play, a Dwayne Haskins rush in the endzone. Haskins has been criticized for his lack of running ability, but he got the ball into the endzone to cut the lead to one touchdown again.

After trailing the entire game the Buckeyes finally tied the score at 31 when Haskins hit K. J. Hill with a six yard touchdown pass. The OSU offense was rolling, but the defense was still getting rolled. it took just one possession for Maryland to retake the lead on a drive that feature a fake punt that caught the Buckeyes napping. The fake punt play carried to the OSU 31-yard line. Three plays later a 27-yard touchdown pass put Maryland back on top 38-31.

The OSU defense was reeling but the offense stayed hot. They answered Maryland’s touchdown with another one of their own to tie the game again at 38, this time going 75 yards in 12 plays with Haskins once again getting into the endzone on a one-yard run.

I remember a team that had to get lucky to beat Cincinnati, have a miracle to beat a 6-loss Purdue, and needed overtime vs a 7-loss Illinois..... im not saying this team is like that one...just trying to put this in perspective. We’re 10-1 and still in every race.

And before the “I don’t want this team to play Alabama” people come back out...I remember that same team beating an all-time Miami team that we didn’t belong on the same field against.
Yeah, I'm with you. I saw that Illinois game in person with my late wife. The naysayers were having a field day right up to the CG.

Let's go the distance. :urban2: :oh:

what Bill said

Great time with all the BP crew and the UMD folks were great.

Going to recover, eat some turkey and do it all to 11 again next weekend.

Don't care to even discuss the Maryland game at this point.

It's *ichigan week

Eh, not so much a "have fun and enjoy the ride" as it is "fuck it, they aren't very good but they won an exciting game, so might as well enjoy it for 5 minutes before busting out the pitchforks". At least that's where I am.

That's one way to handle it.

Actually, I haven't read thru the whole thread, but did anyone follow Maryland's missed conversion by immediately talking about how tOSU could get into this year's playoff? Seems like there's always at least one.
