OHIO STATE COMES DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO ANOTHER EMBARRASSING LOSS, BUT FINDS A WAY TO WIN AT MARYLAND

99013_h.jpg

In the past 13 months, Ohio State has suffered a pair of embarrassing road losses to unranked opponents that have lingered over the team’s reputation ever since.

For much of Saturday’s game at Maryland, it looked as though that might happen again.

The Buckeyes never held a lead in regulation against the Terrapins. Ohio State’s defense gave up 535 yards, its offense committed three turnovers – including a pick-six and a fumble just before the goal line – and on special teams, the Buckeyes failed to recover a kickoff. And if Maryland had been able to convert a two-point conversion in overtime, Ohio State would have suffered its second loss of the season.

Less than one month after suffering a 49-20 loss at Purdue, and just over a year after suffering a 55-24 loss at Iowa, there’s no question that a loss to Maryland – which was just 5-5 entering Saturday’s game – would have cast a dark cloud over the Ohio State football program going into next week’s regular season finale against Michigan.

But the Buckeyes survived all of their struggles and mishaps on Saturday, ultimately escaping from Maryland Stadium with a 52-51 overtime win over the Terrapins, improving their record to 10-1 and keeping their goals alive going into a rivalry game next Saturday that will determine who wins the Big Ten East.

“That was just a back-and-forth, back-and-forth game,” Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said after the game. “Very fortunate to get out of there with a win.”

That's one way to handle it.

Actually, I haven't read thru the whole thread, but did anyone follow Maryland's missed conversion by immediately talking about how tOSU could get into this year's playoff? Seems like there's always at least one.

There is always one but as for the majority, people were singing "don't give a damn" on the way out of Maryland stadium within what, 10-15 minutes of that game?

Most have the proper perspective.............which is of course, fuck *ichigan.

I just re-watched the game. The offense, with the exception of the INT and two fumbles, was tremendous. Zone 6 and the TE group were really really good. Haskins was Haskins. The Oline was solid. Dobbins was a horse.

The D was as we all know, soft excrement. Harrison in particular looks lost. I did not see a bunch of missed tackles. I saw guys out of position. Harrison on almost every long run, literally goes the opposite way of the ball. It appears to me that we have automatic Dline slants and at the same time have the LBs automatically go opposite for gap coverage purposes and it was total dog shit. It appears to me, and maybe I am not correct, but we are slanting and taking LBs out of the play because they are not reading keys, they are just automatically covering B gap opposite of the Dline slant and guess what, oh shit the ball carrier went the other fucking way. I hate that shit. Line up, play your position, quit fucking guessing, and play fundamental defense, read your key and do your job. The scheme is shit. It is making capable players look incompetent.

Meyer called the defense alarming. Better late than never to be alarmed but where the fuck has he been?

He also went on to say (and I’m paraphrasing) “DGAF we still won.” So methinks no changes are to be made. They would have been done by now anyway.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this because it's *ichigan week but to further add to some of your points; Damon Arnette had possibly the worst day I have ever seen an OSU defensive player have.

The first long run:

Arnette #3 is circled in red. He clearly has outside contain as his man went in motion opposite and the DL is slanting to the direction of the motion.

White is the safety circled in gray

One heartbeat later look how hard Arnette and White have bitten to the inside, leaving the edge of the defense completely exposed. I circled Harrison in black with the ? because I am not sure exactly what in the fuck he is seeing or doing.

One ounce of vision and a cut from a true freshman RB later and viola

I just can't wrap my head around being that fundamentally unaware as a football player.

Outside contain is drilled into your head in high school (or at least it used to be). Not sure how multi million dollar college coaches are unable to teach this concept or identify players in the recruiting process who have the capacity to learn it.

The win yesterday was absolutely huge in my opinion! I'm hoping we beat TTUN as is everyone else, but if we were to lose next week, and TTUN makes the playoffs, we should be in the Rose Bowl, correct? I could certainly live with that. Not so sure if we lose yesterday and next week, that the committee wouldn't pick an at large team to fill the void. Now, I think we're in win or lose next week.
