Game Thread Ohio State @ Maryland - 11/17/18, 12:00PM (ABC)

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this because it's *ichigan week but to further add to some of your points; Damon Arnette had possibly the worst day I have ever seen an OSU defensive player have.

The first long run:

Arnette #3 is circled in red. He clearly has outside contain as his man went in motion opposite and the DL is slanting to the direction of the motion.

White is the safety circled in gray

One heartbeat later look how hard Arnette and White have bitten to the inside, leaving the edge of the defense completely exposed. I circled Harrison in black with the ? because I am not sure exactly what in the fuck he is seeing or doing.

One ounce of vision and a cut from a true freshman RB later and viola

I just can't wrap my head around being that fundamentally unaware as a football player.

Outside contain is drilled into your head in high school (or at least it used to be). Not sure how multi million dollar college coaches are unable to teach this concept or identify players in the recruiting process who have the capacity to learn it.

You had me at fuck *ichigan.

Will you and little Jax be making the trip?

I did not see a bunch of missed tackles. I saw guys out of position. Harrison on almost every long run, literally goes the opposite way of the ball. It appears to me that we have automatic Dline slants and at the same time have the LBs automatically go opposite for gap coverage purposes and it was total dog shit. It appears to me, and maybe I am not correct, but we are slanting and taking LBs out of the play because they are not reading keys, they are just automatically covering B gap opposite of the Dline slant and guess what, oh shit the ball carrier went the other fucking way. I hate that shit. Line up, play your position, quit fucking guessing, and play fundamental defense, read your key and do your job. The scheme is shit. It is making capable players look incompetent.

Well said. It's amazing to me that on the long runs, there are just no defenders around. Guys are SO out of position.

Exactly. Guys are out of position. WTF is Harrison doing? You can say that on almost every long run. Arnette, are you fucking serious? To me, this is still coaching. This should be preparation. I haven't broken down Maryland's run game by any means, however, after 10 fucking games, I cannot imagine this play was not one of their base runs that they have shown maybe what 50 fucking times this year? And Arnette goes inside, Harrison has no fucking clue, and White runs the alley that poorly? Seriously? These guys are not that poor of players, the RB is not Barry Sanders, this is piss poor preparation and practice time.

Meyer called the defense alarming. Better late than never to be alarmed but where the fuck has he been?

He also went on to say (and I’m paraphrasing) “DGAF we still won.” So methinks no changes are to be made. They would have been done by now anyway.
We're 11 games in. They are what they are at this point. Not sure what changes can be made. What happens in the weeks following the bowl game is what I'm concerned about.

I’ll add the weeks leading up to the bowl game, as well.
I would say yeah, but i have zero faith in our coaches to get the LBers and secondary right. They look completely lost. If they're this bad this far into the season, i don't see how this defensive staff, as currently constructed, can suddenly learn how to coach these kids. Bottom line, Urban made one toxic and at least a couple of questionable hires.

It’s 2013 all over again, the coaches need reshuffled in the offseason.

And no more nepotism hires. Bill Davis was a lousy NFL coach who hadn't coached in college since he was a GA at Sparty in 1991. That was the worst hire he's ever made from an on-field standpoint. At least Tim Beck could reel in blue chip recruits from Texas.
This also brings up another aspect of Meyer's philosophy I'd like to see changed: Quit valuing recruiting prowess over coaching ability. What's the use in hiring recruiting good recruits if you can't coach them worth a damn?

Edit: Slip of the tongue.8D

well, I would say he needs to better manage the paradox of recruiting skill vs teaching/coaching skill.

They can't all be LJSr so you do have to prioritize. That said, you can't so over index to recruiting that you have players running around clueless to the basic fundamentals of the game of football.

only one or two

that's the reeeeeaaaaaally maddening part.
Do you want to guess what is more maddening? For some reason we thought "well maryland puts you in 1 on 1 situations"...

WRONG. They put our shitty stubborn defense in one on one situations .. the rest of the conference (at least the good teams) nut punched those fuckers to make them 100th in the country in offense.

Hearing these coaches talk defense gives me hope that one day I will no longer be posting here but instead coordinating our bucks. Arrogant I know but I can't help it... these defensive coaches make me feel like I can pick the winning mega millions correctly.

Whatever is common sense... we make it difficult.

White doesn't play all year when he's clearly our best option at safety? We play man on man even though we don't have the personnel to do it (Wade and Okudah can handle it though), we continue to walk our linebackers up, we continuously get destroyed in the first half, our linebackers can't read anything, 47/16/52 don't even get looks when 20 is lost, and if all else fails just throw it up because our DBs won't look for the ball.

"Why don't you look back for the ball?".... "because that's not what we teach"...

Well everyone else teaches it differently. So are we right and everyone else is wrong? Doubt it.

I fully understand I dont know a damn thing compared to literally any coach.. so let me be clear I'm being overzealous on purpose.
