Ohio State men's hockey falls again to Minnesota, 4-3

The Ohio State rally came up just short as the Buckeyes fell to the Gophers for the second straight night
Even Teddy Bear tosses and Script Ohio's on ice weren't enough to help Ohio State find a way to upset Minnesota this weekend. For the second straight night, the Ohio State mens hockey team came up just short against the Golden Gophers, this time losing by a score of 4-3.
Ohio State was down three goals by a score of 4-1 at one point, but found a way to claw back into the game before simply running out of time. David Gust would extend his point streak to 15 games with two assists in this one while the young guns once again led the goal scoring charge. But it just wasn't enough.
As you can imagine when a team is down 4-1 at one point, the first period didn't go too swell for the Buckeyes. Hudson Fasching scored Minnesota's first goal, shorthanded, at 10:18 after Justin Kloos forced a neutral zone turnover. Connor Reilly scored at 17:37 to put the Golden Gophers up by two goals and send them to the first intermission with a two goal lead.
Fasching would score again at 14:40 of the second but Ohio State would get that one back quickly as Mason Jobst tallied his ninth of the season quickly after. Then, at 16:49, Leon Bristedt restored Minnesota's short three goal lead. Minnesota was up 4-1 heading into the third period and outshot the Bucks 13-6 in that second period despite being up by multiple goals. That is a team just simply dominating another, score effects be damned.
The third would be much more Ohio State friendly but ultimately simply not have enough time in it for the Bucks to gain the equalizer. Luke Stork scored his third of the season on a pretty individual effort at 3:32. Sasha Larocque received the primary assist while Christian Frey notched his first career assist after being credited with the secondary helper.
John Wiitala cut the lead to one at 11:45 with his sixth of the year, with Gust and Drew Brevig being credited with the assists. But that was all Ohio State would get. Despite pulling Frey for an extra attacker and having almost ten minutes to tie the game, the Bucks came up just short. Ohio State was still outshot in the third, 11-9, despite being down multiple goals for much of the period and needing to put pressure on to tie the game up. It's pretty hard to win or tie a game playing like that.
On the bright side, Ohio State extended its penalty kill streak to six games but when your'e allowing shorthanded goals, that really isn't as bright a statistic as it should be. Neither team scored on the powerplay in this one, but Minnesota's shorthanded goal proved to be one of the critical blows.
The Bucks will look to get back on track next weekend when they travel to Penn State for another conference matchup.
