Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

Fredo comes a callin

Miami University is not new to winning in men?s hockey.

The RedHawks have qualified for the NCAA Tournament and won at least 23 games in each of the past seven seasons, advancing to the Frozen Four in 2009 and 2010. They are Ohio?s best team, but a victory or two at Ohio State this weekend will be celebrated with vigor by a burgeoning fan base.

?There?s just something about beating Ohio State,? Miami alumnus Greg Daugherty said. ?It?s the in-state rivalry, the Ohio State brand.?

Daugherty sits on the board of the Columbus chapter of the Miami alumni association. He will be among 250 or so RedHawks fans who will attend one or both games at Value City Arena tonight and Saturday.

Michigan is the biggest college hockey draw in Columbus, but the building also buzzes when Miami is in town.

?Every time they come here or we go there, the crowds are good and the games are good,? Ohio State defenseman Brandon Martell said. ?It?s always back and forth. I don?t think it?s ever really been a one-sided rivalry.?

Ohio State and Miami have been rivals since the RedHawks joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in 1980. Miami has a 66-61-12 series lead.

Miami (10-3-3, 7-3-2-2), ranked fifth in both major polls, has a 6-year-old gem of an arena that is conducive to standing-room crowds of 4,000 and appealing to recruits. Ohio State (7-5-4, 6-2-2-1), meanwhile, plays in cavernous Value City Arena and practices at the ancient OSU Ice Rink.

Fredo wins shootout

Ohio State and Miami University brought two of the nation?s best goaltenders, team defenses and penalty-killing units into the opener of a weekend series last night.

Add in some sloppy ice, and the mix produced a 1-1 tie after regulation and overtime. Miami center Austin Czarnik got the only goal of the shootout, which only counts in Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings, in front of 4,345 at Value City Arena.

?Just a typical rivalry game with Ohio State,? Miami coach Enrico Blasi said. ?It?s always right down to the wire.?

Ohio State goaltender Brady Hjelle saved 28 of 29 shots. Miami freshman Jay Williams saved 22 of 23, and he stopped Alex Szczechura, Riley Simpson and Ryan Dzingel in the shootout.
?It stings, but at the same time, you have to keep the perspective that it?s really a tie,? Hjelle said. ?We just have to be ready for (the finale).?

The teams conclude their series at 8 tonight at Value City Arena.Ohio State defenseman Devon Krogh broke a hard-hitting but free-flowing scoreless tie at 3:52 of the third period when he took a slap shot that hit Williams in the shoulder and deflected into the net.

The goal, Krogh?s second of the season, was one of opportunity. He was trailing a rush by center Travis Statchuk that was broken up by a Miami defender, who swatted the puck into the boards. It caromed to Krogh, who took his shot from the edge of the right circle.

?I just saw a lot of space,? Krogh said. ?It was one of those games, low-scoring, where you?ve just got to put pucks on net.?

Two games against Ohio State were a drain physically for Miami University, but the effort produced a handsome reward: a share of first place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

“It was a tough weekend of hockey,” Miami coach Enrico Blasi said after a 3-1 victory in the series finale last night in front of 5,129 at Value City Arena. “You can see it on the guys’ faces.”

The RedHawks (11-3-4, 8-3-3-3) got goals from Alex Gacek, Blake Coleman and Riley Barber. They outworked and outclassed the Buckeyes for two periods and steeled themselves when Ohio State rallied in the third.

“They came out with a purpose in the first period,” Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki said. “Certainly, we didn’t play to our liking in the first two periods. But I don’t want to take anything away from them. What they have on their bench and in that locker room, that’s a good hockey club.”

Ohio State (7-6-5, 6-3-3-1) was a stride behind for most of the first period. The Buckeyes took only five shots.

Gacek gave the RedHawks a 1-0 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the first when he pounced on a puck in the slot and flicked a wrist shot over the glove of goaltender Brady Hjelle.

I'm not down on the team yet. I think the second half collapse last year made things look more drastic than they were, but the first half (and the #1 ranking) were a bit of a fluke to begin with. Right now, we're in 4th place in the CCHA, winning games that we're supposed to win and playing tough in games we're supposed to lose.

Long term, I think Oz will turn out to be a solid coach. I just hope that it's here. My fear long term is how do we recruit and compete in the BTHC without a proper hockey facility? We don't have the tradition and generational support that programs at MSU/UM/UM Lite/Wiscy have. We don't have the facilities. With Ped Aggy getting a state of the art hockey only facility and having a whale benefactor behind the program, there's a real fear that we could end up as the perennial bottom dwellers.

I totally agree. I think that was one of Andy's biggest mistake was to not build a only hockey facility but I don't think he had any choice because of the money they poured into the Schot.

This team is playing well and with decent goaltending you can stay in any game. Right now our problem is scoring goals. I think we will get recruits because we have a very good HC now as compared to what we had in the past.

Shutout by Fredo once again:(
Curtis McKenzie scored the only goal and Jay Williams made 29 saves in Miami University’s 1-0 victory over Ohio State last night in the first round of the Three Rivers Classic men’s hockey tournament in Pittsburgh last night.

McKenzie scored his sixth goal of the season, beating Buckeyes goaltender Brady Hjelle 14 seconds into the third period. Jimmy Mullins assisted on the goal.

Hjelle made 18 saves for Ohio State, which outshot fifth-ranked Miami 29-26. It was the first shutout against the Buckeyes this season.

Ohio State played the final 1:04 with its net empty for an extra skater, but Miami still outshot Ohio State 14-6 in the third period after the Buckeyes had a 13-5 advantage in the second.

Miami (12-3-4) will play Robert Morris (8-4-2) in the championship game tonight in the Consol Energy Center. Robert Morris defeated Penn State 6-0.

Ohio State (7-5-5) will play Penn State (7-9-0) at 4:30 p.m. It marks the first game between the teams as varsity opponents, with the Nittany Lions joining Division I this season.

We--particularly when Casey was here--certainly got the recruits before. It's just that Markell couldn't coach them worth a damn, and the best would actually seem to regress under his tutelage--i.e. Steckell and Umberger being the two most tragic examples. Oz can coach them I believe, but I wonder how successful he can be if Ohio State comes to be seen as the bottom feeder of Big Ten hockey. I'd love to see Oz field a team with the talent that Markell was able to bring in a decade ago.

And I don't look to GS for any leadership in this realm. He hasn't seemed to give two fucks about hockey since he showed up, and I don't see that changing.

One would think that with the NHL in lockdown mode, that the Athletic PR department would really put out a push for people to come to Ohio State hockey games but so far I have not seen much of a push and that falls on GS otherwise known as jackass.
