Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

Chris Crane scored twice to help Ohio State defeat Ferris State 3-1 last night in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Buckeyes (8-8-5, 7-3-3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind first-period goals by Alex Szczechura and Crane. Crane, a junior forward, added his fifth goal of the season 1:52 into the third period to pad Ohio State’s lead.

Justin Buzzeo scored at the 11:13 mark of the third period to spoil Brady Hjelle from earning his fourth shutout of the season. He finished with a season-high 38 saves while allowing one goal or less for the 11th time this season. He also lowered his goals-against average to an NCAA-best 1.40.

The victory ended a six-game winless streak for the Buckeyes, whose last victory was Dec. 1 at Michigan State. They took over fourth place in the CCHA with the victory.

Ferris State is 9-9-3, 7-7-1.

This team is very young and it will be interesting to see how they perform now that they are "healthy".
All along, Mark Osiecki knew how tough the road would be for his Ohio State men’s hockey team.

The Buckeyes have played 11 of their past 14 games away from Value City Arena. Ohio State won only one of the past seven of those road games, dropping to 8-11-5 overall and 7-6-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

But Osiecki is hardly discouraged. He likes the resolve of his young team. He’s happy that the Buckeyes finally are getting healthy after weathering significant injuries. He believes the struggling offense is on the verge of clicking.

The Buckeyes will be back at home tonight and Saturday against Lake Superior State and next weekend against Notre Dame. The hope is that the homestand will serve as a springboard for his team.

“Coming in here, we probably looked at this year being the most difficult year in building the foundation we wanted to bring in,” said Osiecki, who’s in his third year as Ohio State’s coach.

That’s because the Buckeyes have only four seniors, including transfer goaltender Brady Hjelle, and only five juniors have seen action this season. The other 17 players are sophomores and freshmen. They are the core of this team.

Injuries to freshman forward Anthony Greco, freshman defenseman Sam Jardine, sophomore forward Nick Oddo and senior defenseman Devon Krogh have been tough to overcome. The Buckeyes are averaging only 1.92 goals a game.

Osiecki said the injuries have drastically affected the offense.

“We haven’t had any chemistry,” he said. “We haven’t had any kind of continuity. The roster has been different almost every game as a result of it. You don’t want to use that as an excuse — hopefully, it’s going to help the overall depth and competitiveness of our team. (But) what kind of chemistry can you have with lineup changes and power-play changes all the time? It puts you back on your heels.”

Now, Osiecki said, the Buckeyes are as healthy as they have been all season. He took encouragement from last weekend’s series at Northern Michigan, when the Buckeyes lost 4-2 and 3-2. But Osiecki said his team had 35 total scoring chances and only yielded a handful each night.

http://www.westerncollegehockeyblog...31/3939448/tyler-sheehy-commits-to-ohio-state
Burnsville High School(Minn.) junior Tyler Sheehy announced via his Twitter account (@t_sheehy22) that he had verbally committed to Ohio State.

Sheehy, a 5'10" 175 lbs forward, is one of the top high schoolers in the state of Minnesota. We currently have him rated as the third best junior in the state behind Edina's Connor Hurley and St. Cloud Cathedral's Austin Poganski. He's played in the Upper Midwest Elite League each of the past two falls, as well as dressed in a few games for the Waterloo Blackhawks of the USHL. Through 20 games this season with Burnsville HS, Sheehy has 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points against a pretty difficult high school schedule. He's a late '95 birthday, which means he'll be eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.

Sheehy had been recruited by many schools in the upper midwest, but he'll head to the Buckeyes where head coach Mark Osiecki is an alum of Burnsville HS. Playing in the Big Ten will also keep him playing in Minnesota and Wisconsin every year.

Take on Notre Lame this weekend
When he was an NHL player, Mark Osiecki prided himself on his willingness to block shots.

So it’s no surprise that the Ohio State men’s hockey coach emphasizes that aspect — or more precisely, desire — with his team. Hockey is a selfless sport, and absorbing some welts is part of the deal.

Buckeyes junior defenseman Curtis Gedig is second on the team behind Justin DaSilva with 41 blocks heading into this weekend’s home games against Notre Dame. But Osiecki said there’s a big difference between the way he was as a journeyman player and Gedig is.

“His blocks come from his good footwork and a great stick,” Osiecki said. “His gap control is outstanding because he skates so well. I used to like blocking shots, but I was a terrible skater. I had poor gap control, so I had to (hurl my body to) block a shot.”

Gedig said that during his first two seasons at OSU, Osiecki’s emphasis on blocked shots was always in his head. Now, as a junior, it has become second nature.

“If you can’t block shots and aren’t willing to sacrifice that for the team,” Gedig said, “I don’t think you can be a successful D-man.”

Taking one for the team is an essential part of Gedig’s game, but as Osiecki alluded to, it’s not the only one. Osiecki said that the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder is one of the top three skaters on the team, has exceptional stamina, is a good shooter and is good with the puck. Both coach and player said Gedig needs to improve his awareness without the puck.

Gedig said his skating skills are partly natural, but also are the product of hard work. His family moved from one British Columbia town to another when he was 12. Being the new kid, he spent most of his time at the gym, particularly working on a treadmill-like device that improved his skating form.

Nice victory for the Buckeyes:)
Four power-play goals propelled Ohio State to a 6-3 upset of ninth-ranked Notre Dame in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game at Value City Arena.

The Buckeyes (11-11-5, 10-6-3-1) scored five goals in the second period to erase a 1-0 lead for the Irish (16-11-0, 12-7-0). Ryan Dzingel had two goals — both on the power play — and goaltender Brady Hjelle registered 28 saves for Ohio State.

Bucks lost last night in a shootout. Frustrating game that OSU was lucky to get a point out of. ND more than doubled OSU in shots (something like 47 to 22). OSU's goals came on a shorthanded breakaway and a 5-3 power play.

Buckeyes have moved into 5th in the CCHA and are only a point behind fourth place Ferris State. Our treacherous, backstabbing little cunt of a brother is in first, and we're nine points back.

Key two game series with second place WMU tonight.

Pretty Good Weekend for the Hockey Team

The Ohio State men?s hockey team skated to a 1-1 regulation tie, but lost in a shootout to Western Michigan in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game last night in Value City Arena.

The Buckeyes (12-12-7, 11-7-5-1) took a 1-0 lead 5:57 into the second period when Tyler Lundey picked off a loose puck after Max McCormick?s shot sailed wide and settled in front of the net. Ryan Dzingel also assisted on the play for his team-leading 29th point.

After Matt Stewart tied the score for Western Michigan late in the second, Brady Hjelle stopped all 13 shots in a third period that was dominated by the Broncos, who limited OSU to just three shots.

Hjelle totaled 30 saves; Broncos goalie Frank Slubowski had 18.

Each team had a power-play opportunity in overtime, but managed only one shot. Then the Broncos (18-7-6, 14-5-4-2) scored on two of their final three shootout attempts.

Ohio State erupted for four goals in the second period to overwhelm No. 6 Western Michigan 6-3 in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game last night in Value City Arena.

Junior Alex Szczechura had his first career hat trick and four-point night for the Buckeyes (13-12-7, 12-7-5-1).

Sophomore Tanner Fritz had a goal and three assists, and sophomore Max McCormick had a goal and two assists.

Ohio State rallied from a goal down twice and closed out the game with four unanswered goals.

Goaltender Brady Hjelle had 22 saves for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State vs. TSUN 6:30 p.m. tonight BTN

Big series this weekend against the scum from up north:evil:
Alex Szczechura was the ringleader on an Ohio State hockey line that combined for 11 points in a win last week, but modest almost to a fault, he treated it as ancient history as the Buckeyes prepared to play Michigan tonight and Saturday in the last homestand of the regular season.

The Buckeyes (13-12-7, 12-7-5-1) are tied for fourth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

?We?re coming down to the last four games of the regular season, and we want to finish strong headed into the playoffs,? Szczechura said. ?So this weekend is very important for us.?Coming off his first career hat trick in a win over Western Michigan in which linemates Tanner Fritz and Max McCormick also excelled, Szczechura?s focus was on the team. Coach Mark Osiecki saw that as proof that the program is headed in the right direction, a bearing he expects to be maintained with Michigan coming to Value City Arena tonight in a game to be televised by the Big Ten Network

?For us it doesn?t matter who we?re playing. Our guys have been very good at staying focused and very businesslike this season,? Osiecki said. ?You can see that every day in practice. You don?t have to say much to them at all.

?On the flip side of that, all you have to do is understand who we?re playing and what they stand for, and what Red (Berenson, Michigan coach) has done with that program. It?s been phenomenal.?

Yet Michigan (10-18-2, 7-15-2-2) has struggled with goaltending this season, leading to an inconsistent defense. Ohio State, on the other hand, is tied for eighth in the nation in team defense, giving up just 2.2 goals per game.
