Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

19. TOMMY NAPPIER, MEN’S HOCKEY
The Big Ten Goaltender of the Year in 2018-19, Nappier is a finalist for the honor once again after finishing with the second-best winning percentage (.613), third-best save percentage (.932) and second-best goals against average (2.04) in the conference this season.

With a record of 17-10-4, Nappier was in goal for all but three of the Buckeyes’ wins this season, and will go into his senior season with a chance to cement himself as one of Ohio State’s all-time great goalies.

18. TANNER LACZYNSKI, MEN’S HOCKEY
Laczynski led Ohio State and tied for third in the Big Ten this season with 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) in 36 games. The senior forward leads the entire Big Ten with 17 power play points, and helped lead the Buckeyes to a 20-11-5 record and berth in the Big Ten tournament semifinals before the remainder of the season was canceled.

Laczynski was named as one of the Big Ten’s three stars of the week three times this season, has been named a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and will presumably be among the top candidates for All-Big Ten honors when the conference announces its end-of-season awards. Now, he is set to begin his professional career after signing an entry-level contract with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

MEN'S HOCKEY: OHIO STATE'S HEIN AND MEYER LOOK BACK ON BITTER END TO BUCKEYE CAREERS

DSC_0783-530x353.jpg

It wasn’t the end they wanted, but senior forwards Ronnie Hein and Carson Meyer still capped their Ohio State careers on a high note.

The Buckeyes defeated Wisconsin in back-to-back games in Columbus, Ohio, to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament, where they were destined for a matchup with rival Michigan.

But just three days before the March 15 matchup with the Wolverines, the remainder of the season was canceled due to COVID-19.

“It was a bummer, but at the end of the day, this is a lot bigger than just hockey right now,” Hein said.

The rivalry game was slated to take place at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, where the teams played in the conference semifinals just two years prior.

Hein missed that game with an injury and lost out on the chance to gain back the opportunity this year. He said it was disappointing to not experience that moment with his fellow Buckeyes.

“Two years before, when we played Michigan, I was out with my hip surgery, so I did not get to play in that at all towards the end of the year,” Hein said.

The Big Ten Conference announced March 12 that it was canceling all conference and nonconference competitions through the end of the academic year.

Hein, the team’s head captain, said the campaign’s abrupt end didn’t leave room for a proper goodbye to his teammates.

“We were all getting ready to go play at Nationwide and the next day we had guys packing up their stuff and going home,” Hein said. “That day in the locker room, when coach told us that everything was kind of done, that was the last time the entire group will be together at one time.”

HOCKEY SZN IS NIGH. Football's got the green light to start in just over two weeks, but it looks like another contact sport is ready to roll as well – complete with one of the most bizarre affiliate schools we've seen yet.

Yes, Arizona State is effectively joining the Big Ten this season (though they won't be eligible for the Big Ten tournament), playing a 28-game conference schedule all on the road.

I respect the hell out of this. None of these games will be within 1,500 miles of Tempe, but they're still going for it.

You've gotta do what you've gotta do to play.

Man, it's amazing to see this program as a perennial top 10 program, reloading and contending for the conference championship and an ncaa berth regardless of how much talent they lost from the year prior. Now imagine if Gene would actually get us that 5000 seat arena.
