Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

Dominant win by the Buckeyes tonight on the road. 3-0. Lacynski came back from his concussion to put two into the net. Colgate only had 17 shots on goal, and when they got a good one Romeo snagged it cold. This is maybe the best complete game that I've seen them play this season. Getting their nose bloodied against Bowling Green really seemed to be the turning point for this team, and they've come out since playing like the team we thought they'd be. They were some hard, pipe-hitting motherfuckers tonight, and here's to hoping they go to work on the Homes with a blowtorch and a pair of pliers for the sweep tomorrow night.

ROMEO POSTS SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT AS BUCKS ROLL PAST RAIDERS

98668_h.jpg

The No. 7 men’s hockey Buckeyes rolled over a struggling Colgate team. Ohio State took command of the game early and never surrendered it. The Bucks outshot the Raiders 44-19 en route to a 3-0 victory.

The Buckeyes took command early in the contest. They kept Raiders goalie Mitch Benson busy in the first period. They put 15 shots on net. Midway through, Ronnie Hein lit the lamp with this backhand shovel.

At the other end of the ice, Sean Romeo quietly turned aside Colgate’s four first period shots. The senior goalie continued to smother the Raiders’ offense in the middle frame. Although Colgate ramped up its attack, the Buckeye net remained clear.

While Romeo stymied the Raiders, Ohio State’s offense kept humming. The Bucks chucked another 17 shots on net in the second period. With 14 ticks left on the clock, Tanner Laczynski converted a Colgate turnover into a 2-0 OSU lead.

Ohio State powered to the finish in the third period. OSU shooters kept up a steady stream of shots on the Raider net. The Buckeye defense locked things down and allowed Colgate only a handful of low-quality attempts. Laczynski iced the victory with a late empty-net goal.

Men’s Hockey: No. 7 Ohio State sweeps Colgate on the road

IMG_7256-26cv67e-530x353.jpg

Game 2

Ohio State’s offense was balanced in its win against Colgate on Friday, scoring once in each period. While the Buckeyes weren’t scoring as often Saturday night, a late goal still allowed Ohio State to come away with the series sweep.

The nets were untouched through the first two periods of the game, with Ohio State outshooting Colgate 23-18 through the first 40 minutes. In the third period, however, the Buckeyes ramped up their shooting as time ticked away, outshooting the Raiders 13-6 in the final period and 36-24 overall.

Senior forward Dakota Joshua scored the only goal of the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in the third period and was assisted by senior forwards John Wiitala and Brendon Kearney.

The power play was a struggle for both teams on Saturday, as neither team could convert on any of the four power play attempts they were given.

Though Ohio State has struggled offensively on the power play, the penalty kill has slowly improved. The Buckeyes are now killing 80 percent of the penalties they are facing, only allowing eight all season, and they haven’t given one up since their 2-2 tie at Bowling Green in October.

Sophomore goaltender Tommy Nappier provided the second shutout of the series and his second of the season, saving all 24 shots he faced.

This is the first series that Ohio State has shutout its opponent in both games since they played UAH in Nov. 2011.

Watched the 3rd period when I got home The defense has certainly been reborn hard after the 8 goal debacle to STD Fredo. Hopefully the return of Laczynski will pick up the offense. With Jobst, Laczynski (2 legit Hobey Baker candidates), Joshua and the transfer from Fredo, we should be putting up more points.

Canceled my 7 day free trial to espn plus this morning. Wham, Bam, Thank You ESPN.

Men’s Hockey: Carson Meyer transfers back to Columbus roots

carson-1r1xxoq-530x353.jpg

For college athletes, time spent away from friends and family is something they become used to through practice, preparation and games taking up their weeks.

For hockey players, having their families and friends cheering in the crowd as they take the ice is something about which many can only dream. This wish came true for Carson Meyer, who grew up in Powell, Ohio, just a 20-minute drive from the Schottenstein Center, where he now plays hockey for Ohio State.

After the junior forward moves on from college, Meyer will join the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team he’s expressed interest in since its Columbus debut when Meyer was young.

“I started playing hockey when I was 3 years old. It was the same year the [Blue] Jackets became a team here,” Meyer said. “That was a huge part of it, my parents hearing about the Jackets and taking me to games and watching them on TV with my dad and stuff like that. That was pretty much the majority of what drew me to the game.”

Meyer is not just a Blue Jackets fan; he’s also been a part of the organization, playing on the Blue Jackets’ Bantam Major AAA under-16 and under-18 teams for more than four years. The work he put into the organization paid off when he was drafted by the team with the 179th pick in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Though Meyer was excited to play at Ohio State, his return to central Ohio came with hardships.

In his freshman year at Miami University (Ohio), he scored 10 goals and assisted on 16 more, priming himself for an impressive career at one of the nation’s top college hockey programs.

Disaster struck in his sophomore year as his game performances declined to only 10 points on the season. Nobody knew the root of his issues until Meyer revealed that a 25-inch tapeworm had taken up residence in his small intestine.

Tapeworms can cause fatigue and weight loss, so his struggles were easily explained. But it took time for Meyer to recover mentally and get back to where he was before his health issues.

“Last year, as bad as it went, not knowing what was wrong for the majority of the year, you start to kind of second-guess yourself every step of the way. All summer I was working out and working hard, but you never really know. You just get in your own head: ‘What if I can’t get back to where I was?’ and stuff,” Meyer said. “I feel like I’m back to where I was and I’m starting to take steps forward to be even better than I was at this point [last year], so it’s a great feeling, just refreshing.”

Two game series with a struggling Wisconsin team that's dropped out of the top 20. We really need a sweep this weekend to build some momentum for the pedsters and gophers coming up. It's on BTN+ for those that are willing to drop the 10 clams or bones a month for a subscription. I don't know who the chief punk is on that Wisconsin squad yet, but needless to say, I'll be putting a personal bounty on his head for the Saturday night game.

4-0 in the end with Romeo getting his third shutout in a row, and the Buckeyes rediscovering both their power play and their power play kill. Man it was chippy though. Tons of penalties on both sides. Ohio State was just playing good ol' time Eddie Shorr hockey, especially Dakota Joshua who's practically Mother Theresa on skates. Wisconsin got real cheap all game. Too many punks on that squad to pick out a chief punk. Bounties on heads all around.
