Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

Buckeyes go against Notre Dame in the semi final game. Need to win this one in order to advance.
First came the bye. Now comes the Joe. Item after item is being crossed off the checklist of the Ohio State men’s hockey team.

From earning a bye in the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs, to gaining home ice for last week’s second-round with Ferris State and then moving on to a semifinal game on Saturday against Notre Dame at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, the Buckeyes appear intent on using up the pencil.

“We wanted to get (the program) back on the map, and we wanted to start doing big things,” sophomore forward Max McCormick said. “We believe in the team and everyone in the locker room, and I think we’re on the right track.”

That track has carried them to Joe Louis Arena, a place that harbors a mystique for all CCHA programs.

“It’s cool that the (NHL) Red Wings play there, and also it’s got a great tradition with the CCHA finals being there,” McCormick said. “It’s a place you want to be, so we’re really happy to be there this weekend.”

Ohio State hasn’t played there the last weekend of the CCHA playoffs since 2005. The drought was one reason why coach Mark Osiecki was hired three years ago.

He has led the Buckeyes to within two victories of the CCHA title, with the winner of the Ohio State-Notre Dame semifinal playing Michigan or Miami University on Sunday for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. After losing to Ferris State in the first game of a best-of-three series last weekend, the Buckeyes rallied, knowing that another loss would end their season.

“It was just matter of fact for how we showed up and approached the game,” Osiecki said. “We have to go through this. This is a young program in terms of a young team that hasn’t experienced a lot of winning at the higher level.”

And the empty netter ices it for ND. :ohwell:

Bucks were outshot about 45-15, just couldn't generate enough chances to win.

Awww, FUCK. All-in-all, a decent progression forward for the program: no second half collapse, first round bye in the playoffs and a trip to the Joe. It would have been nice to see an all Big Ten final in the last CCHA championship game though.....oh well.

Let's see if those chippy tsun bastards can send Fredo to the bottom of the lake.

that's just way too many shots to ask of a goaltender:(
DETROIT — Ohio State’s renaissance of a hockey season came to a close yesterday with 3-1 loss to Notre Dame in a semifinal of the last Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. The Buckeyes did not go down shooting in Joe Louis Arena.

The Fighting Irish kept taking shots throughout the game, outshooting the Buckeyes 44-17. OSU all-conference goaltender Brady Hjelle let just two get past — the third Notre Dame goal was an empty-netter with 1:05 left.

“Our one thing we talked about this morning is, we needed to attempt 50 or 60 shots,” third-year Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki said, “and I’m not sure if we even attempted 25. That’s just a mindset. We’re trying to get our guys to have that ingrained in them. That’s an experienced team that we played against, a gifted team. They did a nice job.”

Notre Dame will face Michigan today in the final. The Wolverines defeated Miami University 6-2 in the other semifinal.“We emphasized all week to shoot the puck to the net, put bodies to the net,” said Notre Dame forward T.J. Tynan, who scored the winning goal with 16:10 to play.

Going into the third period, the score was tied at 1, with both goals coming within a minute of each other in the first. But Tynan, a third-round pick of the Blue Jackets in the 2011 NHL draft, got open on a power play and fired a sweeping 30-footer past an unsuspecting Hjelle.

“He just shot through the screen,” Hjelle said. “I didn’t see it till it went in.”

For two straight games, that’s about the only one Hjelle didn’t see. His 41 saves, combined with the 47 he had in the deciding game against Ferris State in a quarterfinal series, showed why he was one of three finalists for league MVP.

Well with their record I don't think they will be going to the NCAA tournament as an "at large" team. So on to the 2013/2014 season in the "new Big 10 hockey conference". Hopefully more games will be televised on the BTN.

Mark Osiecki Will Not Return as Ohio State Men?s Hockey Head Coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Gene Smith, Ohio State associate vice president and director of athletics, announced today Mark Osiecki will not return as head coach of the Buckeye men?s hockey program.

?We are making a change in our head hockey coaching position,? Smith said. ?There was a difference of opinion over the management of the program that could not be resolved.?

Osiecki recently completed his third season as the head coach of the Buckeyes, leading the squad to a 16-17-7 ledger. The squad was 13-10-5 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association play to tie for fourth place and advanced to the league semifinals. In his Ohio State career, Osiecki had a 46-50-16 record.

In the interim, Steve Rohlik, associate head hockey coach, will be the primary point person for the program, student-athletes and recruits.

The Schott is really the only big-time stain on Geiger's record at OSU (though I think he hired Jim O'Brien). It's a terrible corporate arena for bball and only gets a more austere feeling for hockey. It appears as the though facilities is core to the issue w/ the men's hockey coach leaving.

I was at OSU-Michigan hockey game that sold out (roughly 10 yrs ago). It was awesome. Also about only time they needed a building that size

Marcus Hartman@marcushartman 15m
Kind of interesting OSU built big shiny new arena to showcase hockey team and building has done pretty much the opposite

Shawn Mitchell@smitchcd17m
Little doubt that was Oseicki frustrated by status quo of hockey program at OSU, including lack of urgency in regarding new facility.

Jeff Svoboda@JeffSvoboda40m"There was a difference of opinion over the management of the program that could not be resolved," AD Gene Smith said in a statement.
