Ohio State Men's Lacrosse (2013 ECAC Champions)

Could the Big Ten add Utah in lacrosse?

One report stays the two sides are at least talking about

Recently, the University of Utah decided to take the plunge and become the westernmost program to play D1 lacrosse, joining Denver and Air Force as the only programs west of the Mississippi.

That’s cool news for Utah fans and for student-athletes, but it also means Utah is going to need to find a conference home, since the Pac-12 doesn’t sponsor the sport. And according to the Salt Lake Tribune, Utah is in “early talks with the ACC, Big Ten and Big East to join a conference.”

The Big Ten, on the other hand, may be the pound for pound best lacrosse league in the country, at least at the moment. Maryland is the defending national champ. Ohio State was the national runner-up, and looks poised to become a lasting power in the sport. Rutgers has been a Top-15 mainstay recently, Penn State has become excellent, and Hopkins is Hopkins. The only bad program in the conference has been Michigan... a school that isn’t exactly lacking for resources and could turn things around quickly.

Surprise...Surprise...scUM sucks at lacrosse too....

Looking for the Utes to be Big East when it's all said and done. Funny as it sounds, with Denver and Marquette in the Big East (both geographically further West than any B1G team...) I'm guessing that's where they land.

Will be interesting to see who tsun hires to replace Paul. I've never been sold on him as a D1 coach. Don't get me wrong, I liked him for tsun more than anyone!

OK, so week one is in the books. We started the season ranked 7/8 which I think is fair given the talent lost from last year... and the talent retained.

I think that some eyes were opened with last year's run and even though we lost Withers at the dot, Fannell / Shanks at attack, Carey in goal, Pearson / Blubaugh / Pfister at middie (among others), we still brought back a lot of fire power with Chell, Leclaire, Jasinski and Kelly. Defensively we lost a few as well, but it's nice to have Terefenko back as a short stick defender... I really loved his game last year... and welcome back to Evans, Randall at pole and Freddie Freibott at LSM. Bringing back that kind of defensive production will be a difference maker in a few games this year.

Anyhow... 1-0 for the season so far. Not much of a surprise here. Bucks won 13-6 against Cleveland State. Given they've been around for all of one year, it's going to be a couple of years for them to catch on. Note, that's not to crap on them at all. I love seeing that we have a second D1 program in Ohio. I wish I could say the same for where I am now here in IL.

Some highlights:
Good game at FoGo (Feliziani soph) had a good game. As a team they went 16/6 at the dot. Feliziani went 10/12... It's going to be hard to replace Jake, but 72% is a good start as a team... even against an up and coming program.

Kelly (who is playing as a grad student) had four goals. Nice day for him. National recognition for a career day.

Leclaire put three in the back of the net too. Looking for Tre to have a huge season. A continuation of last year would be nice but he's going to step up to fill some goals that would have gone to Pearson last year. I'm not sure that he's got the same kind of cannon... Pearson could kill a man with a lacrosse ball... but it's damn close. I think that Tre has better placement and touch so look for him to be big for the next three years.

Jasinski only put one in the net but it was a thing of beauty. Couple of really nice moves here:

Chell had a fun goal. Hung up his pole for what seemed like forever... Efff it... don't get open? I'm going myself...

Some summary stuff:
13 goals on 40 shots. 22 shots on goal. Not bad production there.
Only 4 assisted goals. I personally like seeing that a bit higher.
15 turn overs. Six of which were first quarter. A little sloppy to start but they cleaned it up pretty well after the first.
Caused 15 turn overs. Frankly, this was a little surprising. I would have figured this stat to be pretty lopsided in our direction. I imagine that it may be due to some of the pups getting good playing time.
16/17 on clears which is nice. Only failed clear was in the first quarter. Gonna chalk that up to early season slop.
CSU was 18-22 on clears though. Also would have expected that to be a bit lower for them given how we rode last year. I need to watch the game tonight.
1/3 on EMO and didn't give up a goal when down... so 1-0 in man down. Not a lot to make of there. 33% doesn't suck for EMO, but against CSU I would expect that as a floor. Small sample size of both EMO and man down tho.
36 - 18 on ground balls. Love seeing that. Doubling up on anyone in GBs is a damn fine way to make sure you win a game.

Smidt had six go against him versus seven saves. Not terrible, we'll see how this goes over the year. He played a good amount last year and played well.

Other stuff that went down this weekend:
State Penn lost to Nova in OT. That was a bit of a surprise... I think to everyone. They should be good this year.
Duke frick'n pulled a train on Air Force. Damn, they look good. Like mid season form good... They're my early season pick to win it all this year if they stay healthy. So much talent on that team.

UNC and Rutgers also put one in the W column. Only about a dozen games thus far. Next weekend really starts to have a lot of games scheduled. Probably super bowl and all as to why there were only a few games... Still nice to get in a W early and knock off some rust.

Up next: Boston U at the WHAC 2/10 Noon start. Game on BuckeyeVision for those who want to tune in.

A solid start. Shake the rust off. Got some good film for the defense/keepers to look at to shore up some weaknesses. This team will try and out-score people. If the back end can limit the damage, they have potential to make another run.

Replacing Carey, as a former keeper I may be biased here, is the biggest task imo. That dude dragged us through some games last year.

He did. More than a couple. That said, it was a bit strange that early in the season it seemed as though he hadn't completely locked down his position in goal. Smidt played some quality minutes early in the season in games that were far from decided. If I read that right, that is, Smidt was close to Carey at points early in the season, gives me hope that he'll carry (as it were) the weight this year.

So, it's game day. 20 min or so until they face off. Have my $10/month subscription to SportsLive paid for so I can watch some REAAAAAAALY bad camera work from the WHAC until we start getting on real TV.

So, BU Ankle Biters (Terriers) come into the WHAC for an early season game. They're 1-0 coming off a close win against Providence (12-11). Not much of a scouting report on them other than they're 1-0... We'll see how things go in a couple of minutes. As @rampageripster said, watching what happens in goal will be interesting. I do think that what we brought back at pole, LSM and short stick D will buy us some time to get Smidt comfortable back there. I, on the other hand, will be looking to see if the young fire power can keep up the momentum they had last season.

More later...

10-1 at the half against BU.

I think we’ve only lost one FO. Not a lot of shots on goal from BU. The one against Smidt was man down. For the other shots on goal he seems to be seeing the ball well. Only one shot got pipe and he’s been in front of everything else.

Tre with three goals so far. All pretty much hand free step downs off good ball rotation.

BU played man D through the first quarter. Once they went to zone things slowed down a bit offensively for us. I think we started adjusting well near the end of the half with some picks to try to get bad rotations...

Good game so far, if you’re into complete domination.

Final 15-9. BU went on a nice run to open the second half. I think they ran off four straight. We slowed down at face off as well... significantly. I do think that Coach Nick had them in slowdown mode for a lot of the second half. The young guys also got some good time in the 4th which makes it look closer than the game ever felt.

And one of their goals came off an EMO after a delay penalty for rolling the ball after being called for a ward... kinda a crappy penalty as I don’t think the ball rolled anywhere near far enough to have drawn a flag...

Have to run and will post follow up after I look at the stat sheet a bit later.
