Day 1 Results

January 15

It was a solid opening day for the Buckeyes. Cannon Kingsley, last year’s national Freshman of the Year, went 2-0 in singles play with two dominating wins. He downed No. 14 Andrew Fenty of Michigan 8-3 and then beat Michigan’s No. 28 Ondrej Styler 8-4.

Senior John McNally also went 2-0 with two wins over ranked foes but his matches were a little more dramatic. He came back from down 0-2 against Connor Johnston to win 8-5 and then fell behind Fenty 4-0 before rallying to win 8-6.

Kyle Seelig lost a tough first singles match 8-7 (10-8) to Styler but stormed back against Johnston, rolling 8-0. Sophomore Robert Cash and redshirt-freshman JJ Mercer joined McNally and Kingsley with a pair of wins. For Mercer, the wins were his first as a Buckeye.

Jacob Wareti split his two matches on Friday while JJ Tracy made his Buckeye debut, playing a pair of singles matches and a doubles match.

The teams finished the day with doubles and the Buckeyes got wins from the teams of Kingsley and Seelig as well as Tracy and Mercer.

Bucks dubs did not include cash with McNally at line 1,
They struggled with consistency, but finished strong at 2 and 3 dubs to take the point.
Singles next with lineup 1-6 of Kingsley, McNally, Trotter, Seelig, Tracy and Boulais.

Bucks claim a win in first round of the kickoff 4-0 over MTSU.
Kingsley with a workman like ho hum straight set victory at court one.
Freshman JJ Tracy appears to be the real deal, breezes at court 5.
And Kyle Seelig imposes his will at 4.
Next up tomorrow the bucks will host for the kickoff title the winner of Iowa vs. Virginia

Just askin': What happened to Tim Seibert? Is he no longer on the team or did even the freshman (i.e. JJ Tracy) beat him out for a spot in the singles?

Good question script. You noted that Official roster still lists him on the team.
Team practices will have inter squad challenges to determine a pecking order in the lineup.
No inside knowledge but if I could guess the influx of talent would suggest Tim was passed in the lineup.

I thought maybe he's injured and/or is in COVID-19 quarantine, etc. Anyway if he is still on the team, I'd say he would be a pretty good #7 guy that could bump into the top 6 if the need arises.

This is the only match of the regular season which will feature the only two teams who have won the Big ten title over the past 25 years!
Illinois shocked the world when they upset top ranked USC in the first round of the ITA national indoor tournament last weekend,
Buckeyes will have to elevate their doubles game and be razor sharp focused for today because there won’t be many options for recovering from an early defeat.
