Just sayin':

1. Ohio State can't take anybody for granted; but they did beat Iowa 4-0, Michigan State 7-0 (twice) and 4-0 (once), and Northwestern 4-0.

2. Tennis is all about the match ups. Ohio State and scUM split their 2 matches 4-3; however, scUM lost to Illinois 2-5 and Ohio State beat Illinois 4-1. It's great that Ohio State won't have to beat both scUM and Illinois to be B1G Champions. If past matches mean anything (baring any quarter final upsets) idealy Illinois beats scUM in their "semi final match" and Ohio State beats Illinois in the finals. If Ohio State does play scUM in the finals, McNally needs to find a way to beat Styler and/or they need to win the doubles point this time around.

Bucks are trending down in the highly controversial (i.e. inept), computer rankings used by the ITA;
Bucks are now ranked #35 by the computer formula and singles players, Kingsley (only undefeated player in NCAA's), McNally, Seelig, Trotter et.al will be ineligible by ITA criteria for singles selection because they are so far outside the top 64. Most of the ITA ratings are weighted by wins over ranked opponents but due to 2021 Big ten decision to cut out of conference competitions, limit play to only Big ten schools ranked wins are not available.

Bucks received some slightly hopeful news this week. In anticipation for the announcement of the NCAA tournament selections, ....
Alex Gruskin of Cracked Racquets released on twitter Monday this announcement about computer rankings and NCAA selection decisions:

"The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committees have announced that they will deviate from their standard practices to select this year’s fields for the team and individual NCAA Championships:
Due to very limited fall competition in singles and doubles and limited numbers of non-conference matches played this year, the ITA has acknowledged, and the tennis committee has agreed, that the statistical value of the ITA computer ranking is not reliable on a national level. These rankings dovetail with the committee’s selection criteria and are based on win/loss record, strength of schedule, common opponents, significant wins and significant losses.
While the rankings may be less accurate the tennis committee recognizes that the individual data points themselves are still important elements in the evaluative process. As a result, and in concurrence with the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee, the tennis committee will use the following to assist with its goal of selecting the most qualified student-athletes for the NCAA championships:
1. Use the same foundational criteria (head-to-head, win/loss record, strength of schedule, common opponents, significant wins, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes); however, be able to identify those teams (and individuals) who might be adversely impacted by the lack of non-conference scheduling, and therefore under ranked, and place them within a recommended range and evaluate them individually against the other teams (or individuals) within that range to ensure they are placed in the appropriate position within the bracket
2. Continue to use the ITA computer rankings but weight the rankings less than in a traditional year
3. Monitor conferences through committee members
4. Review conference ranking of teams, singles and doubles players provided by each conference
5. Review past brackets for informational purposes. The committee continues to work toward the goal of selecting the best teams and individuals to participate in the championships while providing those individuals with memorable championships experiences...
The announcement goes on to say: “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these uncharted waters and wish you continued good health, safety and competitive success in the balance of the regular season”

Congrats to the Illinois men’s tennis team.

They won the doubles point, and won the 4-5-6 singles matchups despite dropping the first set in all 3 of those. The last match on the court went to a 3rd set tiebreak, with the Illini #4 besting Kyle Seelig 7-4 in the breaker. Exciting finish that didn’t go the Buckeyes’ way.

Just sayin': The "Achilles heel" this season was not getting the doubles point against the top teams on the schedule, i.e. Virginia*, scUM, and Illinois. That was the difference in finishing 20-3 vs. 23-0.

* Lost 4-2, but the unfinished match was Cannon Kingsley at #1 singles who didn't lose a match all season.

BUCKEYES READY FOR NCAA OPENING ROUND IN WINSTON-SALEM

For the first time since 2005, Ohio State heads out on the road for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament as the Buckeyes will take on VCU on Friday in Winston-Salem, N.C. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. with host Wake Forest and South Carolina State playing at 5 p.m.

KINGSLEY AND MCNALLY SELECTED FOR NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

Ohio State sophomore Cannon Kingsley and senior John McNally have been selected to compete in this year’s NCAA Singles Championship, which will be contested on May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

Kingsley, last year’s national Freshman of the Year and singles All-American, has had a remarkable sophomore campaign. He is 27-0 this season in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the lineup. He was the unanimous Big Ten men’s tennis Athlete of the Year and is a two-time first team All-Big Ten honoree. Kingsley is 46-3 in his singles career.

McNally was both a singles and doubles All-American last season, and this year, he was named first team All-Big Ten for the fourth consecutive year. He has a singles mark this season of 21-4 and is also 17-5 in doubles. He has six wins over ranked singles opponents this year, including a gutty, three-set win over Illinois’ Alex Kovacevic in the championship match of the Big Ten Tournament last Sunday.

The singles championship will be played followed the team championship which will be contested the previous week in Orlando. The Buckeyes received an at-large bid will be in Winston-Salem, N.C. this weekend for an opening round match vs. VCU.
