No. 2 OSU Advances to ITA Kickoff Final
The Buckeyes remain undefeated in dual match play, face North Florida in final

The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes find success on their first match of the weekend, dispatching of Yale in the semifinals of the ITA Kickoff. This continues the Buckeye’s sweep streak to start the season. The Scarlet and Gray move up to 3-0, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-2.
The Buckeyes were firing on all cylinders early on, as no doubles team gave up more than two games. First to win for the Buckeyes were Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert, who earned two straight breaks after starting 2-2 to take the set 6-2 against Nathan Brown and Dylan King. Almost immediately after, JJ Wolf and John McNally defeated Andrew Heller and Ziqi Wang 6-1 to clinch the doubles point. Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce were leading 5-2 against Stefan Doehler and Fedor Andrienko when play was halted.
The Buckeyes continued their dominance in singles as well, as no team has yet gotten a set on the Scarlet and Gray. No Buckeye gave up more than three games in a set today as the match was completed in less than an hour and a half. First to finish for the Buckeyes was Martin Joyce, who only gave up one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nathan Brown. Within seconds of each other, John McNally and Tim Seibert followed up with victories over Stefan Doehler and Dylan King respectively. McNally broke twice in each set to win 6-1, 6-1, while Seibert really found his rhythm in the second set to win 6-3, 6-0.
The other three matches were all in favor of the Buckeyes with all Ohio State players winning at least one set. Wolf was closest to earning the victory, as he was up a break 6-1, 4-3 in the second set over Ziqi Wang. Torpegaard was on serve at 6-3, 2-2 against Andrew Heller. Kyle Seelig was having a competitive match against Fedor Andrienko, down a break in the second set after winning the first to make it 6-3, 1-3 when match play was stopped.
Next up for the Buckeyes is a noon match tomorrow at the Varsity Tennis Center against North Florida, who won their semifinal match against Tulsa. This upcoming match for Ohio State will be the ITA Kick-Off final, with the winner advancing to the National Indoor Championships. To close out the weekend, the Buckeyes will have a match separate from the tournament against Toledo at 5 p.m. at the VTC.

Official Site has this recap of Buckeyes victory over UNF in the Kickoff weekend.
The #2 ranked OSU squad will advance to the ITA Indoor final 16 in three weeks.
Their dominance is showing out against less than elite teams, but so far for 2018, over five matches, Buckeyes have yet to lose a point.

Buckeyes will host #13 ranked Texas Saturday 1 pm at the Varsity Indoor tennis Center.
they will seek to avenge a tough 3-4 loss last year at UT.
a preview of another highly anticipated early season showdown is found on the official site:
http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-tennis/spec-rel/020218aaa.html

Texas snapshot The Longhorns are 4-1 on the year, with all five matches taking place at home.
This upcoming matchup against the Buckeyes will be the Longhorn’s first away match of the season.
  • Texas’ wins include sweeps over UTSA, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and SMU, and a 4-1 win over Tennessee.
  • Texas’ lone loss was a close 4-3 struggle against unranked but undefeated Notre Dame, who won the bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships during that weekend.
  • Because of this, Texas has dropped from No. 8 to No. 13 in both the ITA and USTA polls.
  • Texas has four top-100 singles players: No. 27 Harrison Scott, No. 37 Leonardo Telles, No. 52 John Mee, and No. 98 Rodrigo Banzer.
  • Having the most successful singles run for the Longhorns is Yuya Ito, who has won his singles match in all five matches.
  • The Longhorns also have a very strong doubles lineup, as they have two top-25 duos in No. 5 Banzer/Telles and No. 23 Ito/Scott.
  • These two duos, along with the duo of Colin Markes/Adrian Ortiz, are 2-0 in doubles play.
History vs. Texas The Buckeyes’ and Longhorns’ all-time series is 7-6 in favor of the Longhorns.
  • These two team’s first match took place during the 1983-84 season, which resulted in a 6-3 win for the Longhorns.
  • At home, the Buckeyes do have a 1-0 advantage over Texas, as their first meeting in Columbus was a 4-0 sweep in favor of the Buckeyes.
  • The Buckeyes have won two of the last three, including that sweep and a 4-3 win in the round of 16 NCAA Championship two years ago.
last meeting vs. texas
  • The Buckeyes and Longhorns faced off just last year on March 15, 2017.
  • This match was part of a Texas road trip during Ohio State’s spring break in which the Buckeyes faced both Texas and Texas A&M.
  • It was a forgettable trip as the Buckeyes suffered their second and third losses of the season, both of which were very close 4-3 grinders.
  • In the match against the No. 8 Longhorns, every singles match went to a third set.
  • Ohio State won the doubles point with wins by No. 15 Torpegaard/Herkko Pollanen and No. 32 Joyce/Hugo Di Feo.
  • The Buckeyes then raised the score to 3-0 with wins by Torpegaard and Wolf at courts 1 and 2, defeating No. 12 Christian Sigsgaard and No. 70 Harrison Scott.
  • However, none of the other Buckeyes could hang on in the third set. Joyce and Seelig both had third set tie-breakers but couldn’t recover from early deficits in the tie break.
  • While they will be looking for vengeance, this match won’t be any easier for the Buckeyes, as five of seven Longhorn participants from last season’s match will be returning.

MTEN: Ohio State tops Texas 4-0

The No. 2 Buckeyes sweep their first ranked opponent of the season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – 420 fans filled the stands as The Ohio State Buckeyes showed why they’re a top-5 tennis program in the country, sweeping the Texas Longhorns 4-0. After winning an exciting and intense doubles point, the Buckeyes were firing on all cylinders, and the Longhorns couldn’t overcome a loaded singles lineup. Ohio State moves up to 6-0 on the year, while Texas drops to 4-2.

The atmosphere at the Varsity Tennis Center was great, as the Buckeyes got tons of support from their fans today, especially during the closest doubles point this season for the Buckeyes. Facing two ranked doubles teams, the Scarlet and Gray held their own, not giving up a set on their way to clinching the doubles point. Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert looked their best all season, as they quickly dispatched of their first ranked opponent of the season, beating No. 23 Yuya Ito/Harrison Scott 6-0.

The other two matches took much longer. JJ Wolf and John McNally lost an early break, and the score eventually became 3-5 with the Longhorns having the opportunity to serve out the match. Taking advantage of mistakes by the Longhorns, they broke back and held serve to eventually make the score 6-6. While a good sign for the Buckeyes going forward, that match didn’t matter in the end as Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce defeated a top-5 doubles team in the country, defeating Leonardo Telles/Rodrigo Banzer 6-4. Both teams held serve, overcoming multiple break points up to 5-4 with the Longhorns serving. After some nice volleys, the Buckeyes found themselves up 40-0 with four match points. It only took one however, as the Longhorns double faulted to give the Buckeyes the doubles point.

SETTING THE SCENE
The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes will face their two highest ranked opponents of the season this weekend, playing the No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies and the No. 11 Florida Gators. Both of these matches will be held at the Varsity Tennis Center. Ohio State will first face the Aggies Friday evening at 6 p.m. They will then get Saturday to rest and recover before ending the weekend against the Gators at noon on Sunday. That will be the last of the home matches until late February. Between now and then, the Buckeyes will have traveled to Seattle to partake in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, as well as played their first away match of the season against No. 22 Notre Dame, before coming back to the VTC for a match against Penn State on February 28 to open Big Ten play.
BUCKEYES IN A NUTSHELL The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes have started off the season 6-0, and added their first ranked win of the season after a 4-0 sweep of No. 16 Texas last week. All other wins have been sweeps as well, with the Buckeye’s current point record sitting at 28-0. Along with not giving up a point, the Buckeyes have not yet given up a doubles set, and have only given up four sets in singles. In the first two USTA College Tennis Top 25 rankings of the season, the Buckeyes were placed on top at No. 1. The Buckeyes are have held steady in the No. 2 in the ITA poll updated on Wednesday. They are ranked below Wake Forest, who is No. 3 in the USTA poll, and slid by an unranked Vanderbilt team 4-3 to qualify for the National Indoor Championships. Speaking of which, the Scarlet and Gray also qualified for the National Indoor Championships by defeating Yale and North Florida during ITA Kickoff weekend. This marks the 10th straight year the Buckeyes have qualified. The Buckeyes are 19-0 in singles matches, and 10-0 in doubles matches. In the singles rankings updated for the first time since November, Ohio State has four players ranked in the top 60.
  • Mikael Torpegaard remains at the No. 5 spot. Going 4-0 in dual match play, Torpegaard has only given up 11 games in four matches, including a top-30 foe. This brings Torpegaard’s record to 8-1 on the season, and 4-1 against top-40 opponents.
  • Kyle Seelig moved to No. 30 in the updated rankings. Earning three singles wins so far in dual match play, his record has improved on the season to 13-4, with a 3-2 record against ranked opponents.
  • The biggest benefiter of the new singles rankings, Wolf has jumped 19 spots to earn the No. 41 spot. Really turning it on as of late, Wolf has only given up one game in each of his three wins, including a top-40 opponent. This puts his season record at 6-2, with a 3-1 record against ranked opponents.
  • John McNally has held steady in the rankings at No. 56. Also having a record of 3-0 in dual match play, his season record has jumped up to 9-3. McNally has given up 10 total games in his three completed matches in dual match play.
  • In his first three matches for the Scarlet and Gray, Tim Seibert has shown to be a helpful addition to the Buckeye’s already loaded singles lineup, giving up eight games total in his three wins so far this season.
  • The Buckeyes have their singles lineup rounded out with another veteran in Martin Joyce, who has gone 4-0 in dual match play, including a win over a top-100 opponent to give the Buckeyes the clinch over the No. 16 Longhorns. This puts him at 11-3 on the season.
  • Ohio State now has two top-50 doubles teams in the updated rankings.
  • In the first updated doubles rankings since November, the pairing of Torpegaard/Joyce were placed at No.25, and a big part of it was their clutch win against the No. 5 team in the country when facing the Longhorns.
  • Torpegaard/Joyce are now 2-0 in dual match play, 3-1 on the season, and 2-1 against nationally ranked teams.
  • Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert are now ranked at No. 43. They swept the No. 23 doubles team in the country this past Saturday.
  • Mendez/Tubert have the most dual match doubles wins of any other combination with three. This puts them at 9-2 on the season.
  • The Buckeyes had not yet faced a ranked singles player or doubles team until facing Texas. Interestingly enough, they defeated every ranked singles and doubles player that Texas put in the match, while all unranked Texas players never completed their match before the clinch by the Buckeyes.
Texas A&M snapshot The Aggies are also undefeated this year, sitting at 4-0. They gave up one point in their first match, a 6-1 win against Arizona State. They haven’t given up any since, with a point record of 21-1. Texas A&M’s other wins include 4-0 sweeps over LSU and Cal Poly to qualify for the Indoor National Indoor Championships, and a 7-0 sweep of Tulsa. The Aggies have not yet faced a ranked opponent. No. 2 Ohio State will be their first. The Aggies themselves have slowly but steadily risen through the rankings over the season, and are now sitting at No. 6. Texas A&M has five top-100 singles players: No. 35 Valentin Vacherot, No. 52 Arthur Rinderknech, No. 67 Jordi Arconada, No. 84 Patrick Kypson, and No. 97 AJ Catanzariti. The Buckeyes will have to watch out, as the Aggies are 9-5 against nationally ranked singles players. Leading the way in singles is Kypson, who is 3-0 at the No. 1 spot for the Aggies. Rinderknech and Juan Carlos Aguilar are also 4-0 in singles in dual match play. The Scarlet and Gray will have another struggle winning the doubles point, as the Aggies have a strong doubles lineup with No. 6 Aguilar/Arconada and No. 27 Arconada/Kevin Lam. Both the Buckeyes and the Aggies have not yet lost a set in dual match doubles, so that will change for at least one team this Friday.
History vs. Texas A&M The Buckeyes’ and Aggie’s all-time record is tied at 7-7. These teams first faced off in the 1995-96 season, and was a 6-1 win for the Aggies. Recently, these two teams have played some very close matches. Three of these matches ended 4-3, with the Buckeyes getting one sweep in the 15-16 season. The last four matches have gone 2-2. The Buckeyes have won the last four meetings at the VTC. The Buckeyes and Longhorns faced off just last year on March 19. This match was part of a Texas road trip during Ohio State’s spring break in which the Buckeyes faced both Texas and Texas A&M. It was a forgettable trip as the Buckeyes suffered their second and third losses of the season, both of which were very close 4-3 grinders. In the match against the No. 11 Aggies, the Buckeyes swept in doubles, but couldn’t hold off Texas A&M in singles. Ohio State won the doubles point with wins by No. 15 Torpegaard/Herkko Pollanen and No. 32 Joyce/Hugo Di Feo. Wolf lost the first match of his career after leading 6-0, 4-2, and will be looking to seek revenge on Friday. Other returners to this match are Joyce and Tubert, who both won in doubles but lost in singles, and Torpegaard, who beat the No. 8 player in the country 6-2, 6-4.
Florida snapshot The Gators won their first three matches, including two 4-0 sweeps to qualify for the Indoor National Championships, before being upset by No. 17 Florida State 4-3. Florida will play the Buckeye’s rival Michigan on Friday before their upcoming Sunday match against the Scarlet and Gray. All four matches have been in Florida, so this will be one of the first matches travelling out of state for the Gators. Ohio State’s top two guys will have a real challenge on Sunday, as they face two top-10 opponents: No. 7 Johannes Ingildsen, and No. 9 Alfredo Perez. The Gators also have three top-50 guys as Duarte Vale is No. 43. Andy Andrade has the most singles wins for the Gators with three. The Gators also are ridiculously talented at doubles, with 3 top-10 and 4 top-30 doubles teams. Florida has not yet lost the doubles point, and has only dropped one doubles set. No. 10 Oliver Crawford/Chase Perez-Blanco have the most doubles wins for the Gators with four.
History vs. Florida The all-time series between Florida and Ohio State is in the favor of the Buckeyes at 7-3. Their first match was in the 1954-55 season, and was an 8-1 win for the Gators. After losing their first three, Ohio State has won the last seven matchups against Florida. Four of these matchups have either been in the NCAA tournament or the National Indoor Championships, with the Buckeyes going 4-0 in these matchups. Their last matchup was last year on February 26, and was in Florida. Florida won the doubles point, buy Ohio State dominated in singles and ended up winning the match 4-1. After losses by Torpegaard/Herkko Pollanen and Mendez/Tubert in doubles, wins by Torpegaard, Hugo Di Feo, Pollanen and Seelig gave the Buckeyes the win. Four of the six matches were three sets long.
