Game Thread Ohio State @ Northwestern - 10/18/19, 8:30PM (BTN)

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. It looks like Evanston will be rocking when the Buckeyes roll in on Friday night.

I know the Friday night kickoff makes it a bit harder for out of towners, but I might have to resign my post if this isn't game isn't still at least 40 percent Buckeye fans. We must protect Ohio State's home field advantage, at home and abroad.

Crikies... Friday night game in Evanston is hard on in towners. Would pretty much have to take off at noon to make it from the western burbs.

I keep going back and forth on this one

2013 and 2016 both should’ve been blowouts; both were close

But the thing those Wildcat teams had in common is that they were a little below average on offense. This Wildcat team is dreadful on offense. Really dreadful. 126th in FBS dreadful before the suckfest in Lincoln yesterday.

It’s happened before, and all of the ingredients for a huge underperformance are present for this game. But Northwestern is so bad on offense that a complete no-show by Ohio State might mean a 4 touchdown victory instead of 8 or 9.

And another thing...

If I ever find a replacement for the old-school ncaa spreadsheets that were such a convenient source of data (or if I ever find the time to write a web-crawler to get the data by brute force), there is one factor that I would add to DSA that would improve it dramatically: resilience. Some teams maintain high levels of performance against top competition; some wilt by the square of the power of competition or worse.

Which brings me to 2019 Ohio State Offense. They move the ball and score until they have a comfortable lead against everyone. Their ypc is essentially the same no matter who they play. They are among the most resilient teams I’ve seen. The level of competition might affect things early on, but once adjustments are made, fugedabodit.

The point here, is that the Buckeye offense will get theirs. With the opposition offense being as dreadful as the Wildcats are this year, the worst performance of the year is still probably a blowout.

Ok NW its your turn.....Come git yer whoopin

I'll put more thought into this later but we have a pretty good idea of the template you need to hurt this OSU team. I'm just going to start looking at each remaining B1G opponent and seeing how many of those boxes they check.

Needs:
  1. Solid, or better, OL
  2. Accurate QB who can get the ball out quickly (functional mobility is a plus)
  3. Athleticism at WR
  4. Stout, disruptive DL (premium on these things up the middle)
  5. Athletic back 7
  6. Experienced/well coached enough to play multiple defenses/mix coverage's to confuse both Fields and his OL
  7. A team wide toughness and refusal to be intimidated

That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure others could add to or question some of my assumptions.

That exercise aside, I don't see NU checking off many of those boxes.

Not sure who, besides Wisky, is left in the B1G that does.

8. Reasonably competent running back that can help in pass protection.

Northwestern’s running backs varied between pathetic and hilarious in pass-pro yesterday

we'll make a separate "you might be in trouble if.." list and see how many of those boxes some teams check

as I wrote out the needs list it was pretty clear that a certain team left on the schedule is almost exactly the opposite of what you'd need to be to hurt/beat this OSU team.
