BUCKEYES CRUSH FOUR HOME RUNS IN 11-1 RUN-RULE VICTORY

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Ohio State softball team tied its season high with four home runs as it took down Michigan State, 11-1, in five innings on Sunday afternoon to sweep the series at Secchia Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 29-14 on the year and 12-5 in the Big Ten while the Spartans fall to 15-28 overall and 3-12 in conference contests.

TOP-NOTCH PITCHING

Righty ace Morgan Ray won her fifth straight game and 14th of the season after four innings of work. She gave up one run on three hits and sat down seven batters. Rookie Jessica Ross made her second appearance of the year in one inning of relief with no hits or runs and two strikeouts.

THE SCORING

  • Bri Betschel got the Buckeyes going on a leadoff double and advanced to third base on the throw. Up next, Lilli Piper drove her in with a single up the middle. A walk and fielder’s choice put two on for a run to come across on a grounder, giving OSU a 2-0 edge.
  • Michigan State got on the board in the second inning on a sacrifice fly.
  • Ohio State’s offense erupted for five runs on seven hits in the third. Piper and Emily Clark connected on back-to-back solo home runs. Ashley Prange and Kallie Boren both had singles to get on base for Niki Carver, who demolished a three-run homer over center field, extending the lead to 7-1.
  • The Buckeyes tacked on three more runs in the fourth behind Prange’s bunt RBI single and Carver’s two-run homer. It was the second home run in consecutive at-bats for Carver.
  • In the fifth, Summer Constable entered the game as a pinch hitter and promptly drove a triple to left center, the first of her career. Spencer Sansom got her across home plate with a sacrifice fly.
BUCKEYE EXTRAS

  • The Buckeyes have won seven straight over the Spartans and swept them the last two years.
  • It was the second time this season Ohio State took all three games from a Big Ten opponent and had four home runs in a game.
  • The Buckeyes are on a five-game win streak, which ties their longest streak of the season.
  • Lilli Piper went 4-for-4, which tied her career high in hits, with two runs and two RBI.
  • Niki Carver belted two home runs and drove in five RBI, both career marks.
  • Ashley Prange tallied two hits, two runs and one RBI while Bri Betschel had two hits and scored a run.
  • Emily Clark, Kallie Boren, Claire Nicholson, Kaitlyn Coffman and Summer Constable each had a hit.
  • Ohio State out-hit Michigan State, 39-14, and outscored the home team by a 29-9 margin.

  • Five players slugged 1.250 or better through three games.
  • Morgan Ray went 3-0 against the Spartans in 12.2 innings. She finished the weekend with a 1.66 ERA, 24 strikeouts and a .146 against average.
  • Piper batted .778 with a 1.889 slugging percentage while accumulating eight runs, seven hits, five RBI and three home runs.
  • Clark drove in eight runs, connected on seven hits, scored six runs, slugged 1.300 and batted .700 versus MSU.
  • In her first series in East Lansing, Prange was 6-for-11 with three RBI and two runs.

OHIO STATE SECURES 5-4 COMEBACK WIN OVER ILLINOIS ON SENIOR DAY

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sent its seniors out on a high note at Buckeye Field as it swept Illinois with a 5-4 comeback win on Senior Day. The Buckeyes are on their longest win streak of the season at eight games and have a 32-14 record and 15-5 Big Ten mark. The Fighting Illini fall to 27-22 overall and 6-14 in conference play.

THANK YOU, SENIORS

Following Sunday’s game, Ohio State honored its 2019 seniors – Bri Betschel, Megan Choinacky, Emily Clark, Kat Duvall, Lilli Piper and Morgan Ray. The six-member class is responsible for 137 Buckeye victories over the past four seasons, including 57 Big Ten wins. They have earned their spot in the record books as the ninth all-time winningest senior class in program history.

CLARK FOR THE WIN

Staring down two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Emily Clark went yard on a two-run homer to put Ohio State ahead 5-4. It was her 11th home run of the season and second of the weekend.

OHIO STATE PLACES SIX ON ALL-BIG TEN TEAMS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Six members of the Ohio State softball team received All-Big Ten honors as the conference released its postseason awards today. Lilli Piper and Emily Clark earned first team recognition while Bri Betschel, Ashley Prange and Morgan Ray secured spots on the second team. Prange was also an All-Freshman Team honoree. Claire Nicholson was placed on the All-Defensive Team and is the Sportsmanship Award recipient. The Buckeyes’ six honorees is the most under head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly during her seven-year tenure.

Piper is a unanimous selection on the first team for the third year in a row after hitting .574 in conference play to be this season’s batting average champion. She also led the Big Ten in slugging percentage (.941), on-base percentage (.681), hits (39), assists (55) and fielding double plays (9) while finishing second in walks (23) and runs scored (33). Clark batted .380 in Big Ten games and stood third in the league with 29 RBI and eight stolen bases. Betschel ranked second on the team with a .390 batting average and paced the conference with 82 at bats while tying for fifth with 25 runs and seventh in hits (32). Prange led Ohio State’s freshmen class by hitting .384 and driving in 23 runs. Her 46 total bases and 28 hits ranked eighth and 11th, respectively, in the Big Ten standings. Ray picked up nine wins (4th), had a 2.36 ERA (6th), 91 strikeouts (4th) and a .188 against average (4th) over 86 innings. Nicholson caught 11 runners stealing, which tied for first in the conference, recorded 123 putouts and a .993 fielding percentage from behind home plate.

The Buckeyes had a 17-6 mark during the Big Ten season, the most wins under Schoenly and since the 1994 campaign. Ohio State carries a 34-15 overall record into this weekend’s Big Ten Tournament as the No. 4 seed, which is being held at Andy Mohr Field in Bloomington, Ind. Ohio State will take on the winner of No. 5 Wisconsin/No. 12 Iowa Friday at 11 a.m. ET live on the Big Ten Network.

BUCKEYES FALL TO BADGERS IN QUARTERFINALS OF B1G TOURNAMENT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 4 seeded Ohio State’s time in the 2019 Big Ten Tournament came to a close on Friday afternoon in a 10-1 six-inning setback to No. 5 seeded Wisconsin in a quarterfinal matchup at Andy Mohr Field on the campus of Indiana University. The Buckeyes are 34-16 on the year while the Badgers improve to 40-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wisconsin put up four runs in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly, two bases-loaded walks and a wild pitch.
  • The Badgers tacked on runs in the second and third innings with a solo home run by Taylor Johnson, a RBI single and two-run homer from Jordan Little.
  • RHP Kat Duvall took over in the circle with one out in the third and struck out the first batter she faced.
  • The Buckeyes sat the Badgers down in order in the top of the fourth on a swinging strikeout and 4-6-3 double play.
  • Ohio State carried that momentum into the home half of the fourth. Lilli Piper broke up the no-hitter bid and made her way to third base on Emily Clark’s single and a fielder’s choice. In the next at-bat, Niki Carver reached on a fielder’s choice while Piper came in.
  • It was three quick outs for Wisconsin in the fifth, capped off by a Claire Nicholson pickoff.
  • Wisconsin pushed two runs across in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and error for the final 10-1 tally.
IN THE CIRCLE

Three different Ohio State pitchers saw time in the circle. Morgan Ray (17-8) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on one hit in 0.2 innings. Lauren Rice stepped in next, allowing five hits and four runs over 1.2 innings. Kat Duvall pitched the last 3.2 innings. She let in two runs (one earned) and one hit while striking out three.

  • The Buckeyes are 16-16 at the Big Ten Tournament.
  • Emily Clark has reached base in 21 straight outings.
  • Lilli Piper extended her hitting streak to 10 games.

RAY & BOREN NAMED TO COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior pitcher Morgan Ray and sophomore designated player Kallie Boren were named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District 5 Softball Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced.

The Academic All-District teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their contributions on and off the field. Ray and Boren join nine other student-athletes from schools in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan on the District 5 First Team.

As Ohio State’s righty ace, Ray has a 3.77 GPA and recently graduated with a degree in health sciences. The Second Team All-Big Ten honoree paces the Buckeye pitching staff with a 2.12 ERA, 17 wins and 173 strikeouts in 172 innings of work. Ray has been a part of three no-hitters in 2019, including two solo performances, to become the first player since 2007 to have multiple no-hitters in a season.

Boren, a technical education and training major, boasts a 3.94 GPA through her first two years at Ohio State. The Pickerington, Ohio native has tallied 28 hits, driven in 22 runs and connected on four home runs this season. She is also a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

As First Team Academic All-District selections, the duo will automatically be placed on the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third team (when selected) Academic All-America selections will be announced in June.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Google Cloud Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.

To be eligible for Academic All-District and All-America distinction, nominees must have reached at least sophomore academic standing and have a 3.30 GPA or higher to go along with legitimate on-field contributions.
