Ohio State True Freshman Wins 174 Pound National Title

The remarkable run for Ohio State true freshman Myles Martin came to end in the 174 finals at the 2016 NCAA wrestling finals, completing the ultimate goal — a national title. Martin, the 11 seed, made his way to finals only to face the 1 seed Bo Nickal of Penn State for the 4th time this season, losing all 3 of their previous matchups.
The first period began with a fast pace fury as Martin scored the first takedown with in 20 seconds. The rest of the period would take place on their feet with both wrestlers attempting a couple of shots each.
Nickal chose down to start the second and earned an escape to tie the match at 2 w 1:47 to go. Nickal scored his first takedown seconds later to take a 4-2 lead but Martin would cut the lead to 1 with an escape. With :25 seconds left in the period, Martin threw Nickal to his back for a huge 6 point move to take a 9-4 lead.
Martin would chose down to begin the 3rd and final period and would escape to take a 10-4 lead with 1:40 left in the match. Nickal got a takedown with 1:10 left to cut it to 10-6 and Martin escaped to make it 10-7. Martin gave up a stall point late, but won his first national title 11-9.
