Game Thread Ohio State vs Florida Atlantic - 08/31/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

Might also add that Day played this opener just like a certain Wayne Woodrow Hayes - keep everything under wraps for the conference. Used to drive me nuts when Woody wouldn't call anything but the fullback off tackle before the conference games. In those days, when the Rose Bowl was an automatic bid to the conference champ, an OOC loss carried about as much weight as an NFL pre-season game.

1. Aggressive gang tackling on D. Lots of Buckeyes around the ball on most plays and sending guys sideways and backwards in the run game all day. Even on the "soft spot in the zone" completions, multiple Buckeyes were generally pretty close to the WR. Lots more room for error when one guy missing a tackle doesn't mean a big play.
This right here. Besides the individual performances, the defense as a whole looked like a unit. Multiple guys around the ball or within a yard. That’s a world of improvement over last year (or what I see in Oklahoma’s defense with huge gashes).

For game 1 that is really encouraging. With film and more gametime, those windows will get even tighter and hopefully close down into some turnovers.

Funny you mention OU... watching last night's game it was all man press, pressure, and LBs walked up on the LOS.

Just like last years OSU defense once UH got past the first wave (or broke a tackle) it was a huge gain.

agreed on the completion %, as @mendensa said above, he was late on some stuff but that's to be expected. He'll improve on his processing time.

On the roll outs; that's something you do for a young QB to cut down on the # of reads and decision making. Once he's fully in command, then yes you don't wan't to over do the roll out thing (except that the D still has to respect his running ability when he rolls).

We’ll probably see a lot of teams drop 8 into coverage from now on until they see he can make them pay for it. Coach Day said that was a big reason why.

Didn't go thru the whole thread so I'm sure other people have said the same things but I don't think there's any cause for concern with the offense. It's literally the first game basically the entire offense has played together. The offensive line is too talented not to improve with more game reps. Fields was fine. I'm sure Day has been telling him every day since he enrolled that his first job is to protect the football. So in the 2nd and 3rd quarter quarter---when the game all but over---and things getting a little hectic around him, I'm sure he was a little hesitant. Again, he doesn't have any chemistry with his receivers and there's no reason to start spraying the ball over the field into traffic trying to make big plays in that game situation. I don't know what more you could ask from him on that one play where he got a helmet in the chest and he threw a beautiful ball to Olave on the sideline (not sure it was him?) and he dropped it

There’s absolutely no way a kid with his skill set goes out and does what he did in the first 10 minutes of that game and then becomes average, on his own.
There absolutely is. Well.....not on his own. Look at those throws he completed for TDs. I could have thrown them. After Victor walked in, they actually started covering our guys.

Play calling got players wide open for big plays. FAU have very good D coordinator who adjusted in the second quarter. Or did Day just shut things down?
Victor looks like he realizes it's his "money year". Let's see if it continues.
Ruckart will be getting open all year. He's made the leap to a play-maker. Can he score 8-10 TDs?
Olave is a play-maker and a nightmare to cover. 6-8 TDs?
Great to see Mack healthy and making plays. Can he stay healthy?
Clearly, it seems much was held back.
Where was Hill? Covered? Not targeted?

Downside of running Ruckert as the H is that takes Hill off the field. Hill had a few grabs and also had the drop on the long throw too.

One thing I don't recall seeing alot of was the crossing routes. Maybe 1-2 times but otherwise I thought we'd see that more.

There’s a strong possibility FAU spent a ton of time game planning for the crossing routes. With all the film they had on it against Michigan, it doesn’t really surprise me that we didn’t see much of it. I think you’ll see teams try to scheme to stop other facets of the offense, and that’s when you’ll see he crossers return.

Day did mention them dropping 8 which would be what is needed to stop the crossers.

I don't think we will see a lot of man for a variety of reasons.. We have play makers at WR, we will run crossers, and the defense will have their backs turned to Justin. Overall just isn't a smart scheme to run.

Yep.

FAU was rushing 3 and dropping 8 into a zone a lot. You don't run crossing routes into that.

Fields isn't ready to pick that apart yet, aside from the ability to hit wide open receivers from busted assignments. Now he saw it though.....
