Game Thread Ohio State vs Indiana, 10/08/16 @ 3:30 ET, ESPN/WatchESPN

Don't agree with the "by far" statement. The defense is by far the best they've had but the offense is no where near the abilities of 13'-15'.

They average 4.2 yards per rush attempt this year, down from 4.5 last year.
9.9 yards per pass attempt this year up from 8.7 last year (9.9 is good for 7th in the country right now BTW)
Overall points per play is at .380 this year, down from .430 last year
They keep essentially the same 55/45 run/pass mix to their offense from last year
They do seem to be going a little slower in the tempo (drink!) department 76 plays per game in '16 down from 83 last year
Total offense per game is nearly identical at 498 ypg
Scoring is down, 29ppg from 36

So yes they are down a little bit from last year in terms of overall effectiveness and ppg but not a lot.

The reasons why scoring is down so far has to do with red zone efficiency, turnovers and penalties (all 3 among the worst in the country). IU is in the bottom 1/3 on 3rd down conversion % as well.

So if they pick a game to magically unfuck themselves in those 3 areas, you are looking at a very similar team that's somehow given OSU fits recently with a better defense.

Good news is they seem to have gotten Urban and the OSU players full attention.

Just because Indiana seems to have our number as far as giving us way more of a tough game than they should, I'll be quite surprised if we beat them by more than three TDs. Now, we could very well end up stomping them by 40 points, but I just don't see it happening simply because the way Indiana always treats this as their Super Bowl...

A little more data and perspective on their offense:

#22 in total offense
#17 in passing
#61 in rushing
#67 in scoring
#121 in red zone offense

34 points against Florida International (16 of those points were scored by the defense, two pick sixes and a safety)
30 points against Ball State
28 points against Wake Forest
21 points in regulation against Sparty

Against FIU, the offense scored only 18 points (2 TDs and a FG, with a 2-pt conversion). They trailed 13-12 entering the fourth quarter, against an FIU team that is 1-4 with a 41-14 loss to Maryland and a 53-13 loss to Central Florida.

While Indiana did pass for 281 yards against Sparty, the "NO-Fly Zone" secondary definitely no longer exists there, as Sparty is ranked #77 in passing defense at 240 ypg.

I think if we jump out to an early big lead, the Hoosiers will fold like an old wallet. If we let them hand around into the second half, shit could get dicey...

This is the first time in awhile that I haven't thought IU will give our guys any trouble. I don't know if it's just a combination of these guys being too young and hungry to take them for granted or what. Maybe just a feeling that our defense just isn't going to put up with any of their shit. I feel the same way about the following week in Madison. I think they will dig the atmosphere there and thrive on it.

93-17 next two games for the good guys.

Then again, you seem to be basing this on past scores and teams that don't exist anymore. From what I've seen of the 2016 Bucks, they treat EVERY game as their Super Bowl. Take no prisoners. 52-14, Good Guys.

I feel the same way here... past few years I've held my breath a bit and I think it's because of how reliant we were on certain people coupled with glaring issues on defense.

We relied on JT running the ball two years ago (Braxton years before that) and then zeke last year. Now we have the offense I think we've all been waiting for. One that just spreads it around and forces them to defend the entire field. Who do you stop? In the past it may have been zeke or don't let JT get lose but now we don't have to do those things to ring up 48.

On defense in 14 we had a penchant for giving up huge TD runs and prior years it was we couldn't stop the throw for a damn. Last year was better but late in the game missed tackles and poor angles reared it's head.

I just don't know how you attack this osu team. I tend to think you still can have success by running straight at the defense but that takes a lot of patients and your defense has got to keep you in the game.

If we come out and put 21 on the board in the first 20 minutes or so it'll be over.

I'm kinda with @pianobuck46 in that this team just seems different.

Maybe it won't last but I'm wondering if being so young, the depth creating a dynamic that demands performance at all times from all players and the lack of "big name stars" (yet) doesn't keep this let down game we are all waiting for from happening?

If we end up seeing the team leaders and coaches keep the mentality to truly just go balls out at all times, given the talent on hand and the QB they have....holy hell we could be looking at something special.

Agreed. Balls out in each game. And in this game, balls deep.

Speaking on the Big Ten coaches weekly teleconference......

Kevin Wilson (Indiana):
  • Wilson: "We're playing a tremendous team this week."
  • Wilson on Ohio State: "They're always going to be one of the very best in our game."
  • More Wilson on Ohio State's offense: "We'll get tested this week with speed and I think they have one of the premier players in the country at quarterback."
  • On Ohio State's defense, Wilson said, "Their structure is sound. They play a lot of guys and they play hard. There's a lot of talent and a great competitive spirit on that team. ... It's a collective great group and they make a lot of plays out there."
  • More Wilson on Ohio State's defense: "If their offense wouldn't have played, I think they'd still be undefeated."
