Chase Young's suspension and an injury to Jonathon Cooper will thrust Ohio State's underclassman defensive ends into significant roles on Saturday.

Neither Young nor Cooper will play in this weekend's game against Maryland, setting Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday up as co-starters on one side of the line and Zack Harrison and Javontae Jean-Baptiste as co-staters at the other defensive end spot. Smith, Friday, Harrison and Jean-Baptiste collectively have five sacks this season, not even half of the 13.5 sacks that Young has racked up.

Chase Young, Jonathon Cooper Unavailable For Maryland Game

Ohio State will be missing both of its starting defensive ends for this week’s game against Maryland.

Senior Jonathon Cooper is out due to injury, and junior Chase Young will miss the game as Ohio State investigates possible NCAA rules violations.

With them out, four young players will get a chance to play. Sophomores Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday, redshirt freshman Javontae Jean-Baptiste and true freshman Zach Harrison are all listed as co-starters at defensive end for the Maryland game.

Defensive line coach Larry Johnson has stockpiled a lot of talent. Now those young players will have to step up into bigger roles.

Doesn't even look like the lines budged on this game even with the Chase news.

    The headline after the game:
Ohio State breaks NCAA record with 4 players getting at least 5 sacks each.

(I'm just assuming that would break a record.)

Yeah. I get that Maryland sucks, but that's the best player for OSU and another important starter and captain. It's gotta cost OSU 3-5 points.

Glad Tyler Friday is available; was concerned about and since the program handles injury information as if it’s classified intel managed by the CIA, I was wondering and wondering.

It is easy to forget the pressure that Hamilton, Cornell, Landers and Togai bring up the middle. I believe that outside of Young The Baptiste is leading in tackles amongst the DEs. I'm sure the entire DL is up to the challenge. In addition Hafley and Mattison have shown that they can bring pressure from the back seven as well. I still expect to see a dominant performance from our D.
