Ohio State vs. Maryland, Saturday, 12:00 PM, ESPN2

Then again...

The statement was true when I made it. Problem is, the second half was the epitome of lack of effort, hustle and caring...

That's the biggest issue with the program (purposefully not using the word "team") right now. Going on the road and winning is tough. And going on the road and winning with a young team is extremely tough. So it's one thing for this OSU team to be losing games on the road. But to get completely bulldozed (losing by 30 at the half to Indiana and by 45 to Maryland in the second half) is suggestive of a way bigger problem than this team simply being young.

I am confused as to why Matta keeps Loving in the game when he acts like he did today. Is it just because he is the most senior player on the team and he is hoping he will embrace a leadership role? I feel for Kam because when he is on he can light it up and the Bucks could have used some scoring today. Of course you need to see the floor to do that.

OHIO STATE ROUTED BY MARYLAND, 100-65; BUCKEYES SOUL-SEARCHING AFTER LATEST BLOWOUT LOSS

The postgame meeting inside Ohio State’s locker room took longer than usual Saturday afternoon.

The Buckeyes endured a 35-point loss at the hands of No. 3-ranked Maryland — the worst in Thad Matta’s tenure as head coach at Ohio State. It was understandable for the Buckeyes to take their time in the locker room afterward. After a brief silence, there was likely a lengthy conversation by both the players and coaching staff about the state of the team.

It took around 20 minutes before the door to Ohio State’s locker room opened and players and coaches emerged. There were no smiles.

“We’ve got a lot to work on,” sophomore forward Keita Bates-Diop said. “Consistency, playing harder, effort. The little things that you don’t need talent for we’re not bringing.”

The Buckeyes had no answers for the Maryland onslaught.

The Terrapins got whatever they wanted whenever they wanted it in the 100-65 blowout. Maryland torched the nets, shooting 62.7 percent from the field and 52.4 percent from behind the 3-point line. Robert Carter and Rasheed Sulaimon combined to score 47 points for the Terps and the duo missed a total of four shots from the field. The Buckeyes were a step late on seemingly every defensive rotation and to nearly all the 50-50 balls.

“Maryland played as well as maybe any team I’ve ever coached against,” Matta said. “But when that happens you have to stick to your system, stick to what’s been working. Today, I don’t know if we played our best basketball if we would have had a chance to win, but I know that wasn’t close to our best.”

Well, that was a fucking disgrace.

I don't have much to add...that was the most pathetic, uninspired performance I have seen from a Matta-coached team. When the effort is there, I would never say something like that. But I can't even try to defend them when they give up and play with no heart. I usually watch every OSU basketball game, win or lose...but if they play with no motivation again, I am going to have trouble watching them.

I'll be honest, even as a dedicated OSU fan I did not watch one second of this game, I knew what time it was and everything, but I didn't expect the team to be competitive, my attitude was why bother watching it? Unfortunately my pessimism appears to have been warranted. This team just isn't worth watching on the road against good teams, no entertainment value.
