What To Watch: Buckeyes open four-game homestand with Nebraska

After three wins away from home, No. 22 Ohio State returns to The Schott and puts its unbeaten Big Ten record on the line against sudden contender Nebraska (8 p.m., BTN).
Already playing with house money in many respects, Ohio State returns home Monday night to host Nebraska to begin a four-game homestand. Tonight’s game tips at 8 p.m. and will be televised by Big Ten Network.

The Buckeyes (17-4, 8-0) remained unbeaten in Big Ten play after securing three wins away from Value City Arena. That string included road wins at Rutgers (68-46) and Northwestern (71-65) and a neutral site victory over Minnesota (67-49) on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

Just 54 hours after that Minnesota game went final in The Big Apple, the Buckeyes will be back on the hardwood inside Value City Arena to host the surging Huskers (14-7, 5-3). Nebraska has won three of its last four games, including a 72-52 rout of then-No. 23 Michigan last Thursday in Lincoln.

Speaking of rankings, Ohio State could move up from 22nd to 18th or higher when the new AP and coaches polls are released early Monday afternoon.

First-year OSU coach Chris Holtmann is just the third coach in Big Ten history – and the first since 1923 – to win his first eight conference games.

The Buckeyes have won all eight of their Big Ten games by six points or more. OSU has won these eight Big Ten games by an average of 16.2 points.

OSU enters this game tied with No. 3 Purdue (19-2, 8-0) for the lead in the Big Ten. The Boilers host Michigan on Thursday.

The Buckeyes are working their way toward a Feb. 7 showdown with Purdue in West Lafayette. In the meantime, though, they will host Nebraska Monday, Penn State Thursday, Indiana Jan. 30 and Illinois Feb. 4.

Below is our preview as Ohio State hosts Nebraska at Value City Arena.

BASKETBALL PREVIEW: NEBRASKA AT OHIO STATE

90477_h.jpg

Ohio State's fourth game in eight days comes at home against a Nebraska team coming off its biggest win of the season.

The Cornhuskers travel to Columbus fresh off of their 20-point win over No. 23 ranked Michigan on Thursday, and had the entire weekend to prepare for the Buckeyes, a team that is as hot as anyone in the country.

The main concern for Ohio State, however, has to be fatigue. The first three games of the Buckeyes' current four-game stretch came on the road, as Chris Holtmann's squad has been on six flights to Piscataway, N.J., Rosemont, Ill., and New York City and back to Columbus over the last eight days.

Holtmann said following a 67-49 win over Minnesota on Saturday that the Ohio State coaching staff is trying to monitor the minutes of certain Buckeyes, but also knows his team isn't as deep as others.

"Our strength coach (Quadrian Banks) is taking some time (Sunday) with our high-minute guys and doing some extensive rehab and consultation with some doctors," Holtmann said. "We are keeping a close eye on some things. It is a concern for me, the number of minutes and number of games our guys have played."

Ohio State's top three scorers – Keita Bates-Diop, C.J. Jackson and Jae'Sean Tate – average 31.8, 29.8 and 29.2 minutes per game respectively, and make them the most likely candidates to receive rest before tip against Nebraska on Monday night.

OPPONENT BREAKDOWN

Tim Miles' squad has already surpassed its win total from last season with more than half of the Big Ten season still to play. The Cornhuskers have dropped seven games, although four of them have come to teams that have been or are currently ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 this season (Michigan State, Purdue, Creighton, Kansas).

As mentioned earlier, the Cornhuskers are coming off of a 72-52 win over Michigan on Thursday, in which Nebraska got an efficient performance from its leading scorer, James Palmer, Jr. Palmer averages 15.8 points per game, but dropped in 19 on 5-of-8 shooting against the Wolverines, as the junior guard got to the free throw line 11 times, making seven.

While Palmer is Nebraska's most consistent scorer, the Cornhuskers have also been getting increased production from sophomore Isaiah Roby. The forward scored a career-high 14 points in the win over Michigan on 6-of-7 shooting, and showed his versatility, dishing out three assists and swatting a pair of blocks on defense.

Roby has replaced senior Evan Taylor in Nebraska's starting lineup over the Cornhusker's last two games. Both Roby and Taylor average 7.4 points per game, while Taylor has become Miles' sixth man off the bench.

Point guard Glynn Watson runs the show offensively for Nebraska, and averages just more than three assists per game while chipping in 11.7 points per contest. Junior forward Issac Copeland anchors the post for the Cornhuskers, averaging 6.2 boards and 12.3 points per game, and is second on the team in blocks with 26 rejections on the year. Senior guard Anton Gill leads Nebraska in three-point shooting, connecting on an impressive 46.6 percent clip from long range this year.

Feel pretty confident about this one.

KBD gets back in the 20 point column at home. Go Bucks!
How confident? 11 points confident? I am having trouble riding the OSU horse this week coming off short rest giving double digits to a team that just hammered ttun. I have been making a decent second income riding them so far but I am afraid the book makers are finally figuring out this team is good.

Ha, had the -10.5 in mind...I try to stay away from the emotional bets with OSU, but I'm leaning towards them covering.

I'll take the W no matter what.

I am leaning under 139.5. I don't think Corn will break 70 pts and I have a feeling our scorers are going to be off a little tonight, tired legs. Maybe just a wild hair on my rear IDK?

61 to 68 good guys?

I think being at home will keep this from being a clunker.....if it were another game away i'd be inclined to think they might take a L. Confident they win at home tonight, though.

Lol. Personally may have made a very minor investment in +11' here, considering NU is rested, short turnaround for OSU who hasn't shot the 3 well lately, athletic Husker team. Hoping/expecting a 6-7 point spread.

My instinct is that the Bucks throw out a clunker tonight. Short rest, they're due for a bad outing, and they've seemed just a little bit off in the last two games, despite nice solid wins. Would love to be wrong.
The Minnesota game could be considered a "clunker" and they still wound up beating them by nearly 20. Methinks that even if they come out a little cold they'll self-correct and handle Nebraska.

God I hope I didn't jinx them.
