Game Thread Ohio State vs Oklahoma, 09/09/17 @ 7:30 ET (ABC)

OU returns 3 starters in the secondary, Ohio State lost 3. I like our chances stopping the pass, especially against a Kevin Wilson-coordinated offense.

Last year's Bedlam game was the perfect example of how well this defense can play against a high-octane offense, similar to what Wilson runs.

Oklahoma State isn't on the same continent as Ohio State in terms of talent.

Ohio State losing three starters in the secondary only opens the door for guys like Kendall Sheffield and Jeffrey Okudah.

Kind of like breaking the other guys fist with your face to win a fight
Fight?

Of course I understand you being optimistic about OUs chances, but it seems to me that OU's strongest chance to beat OSU was last year, not this. Don't get me wrong, if OSU thinks they can just throw their hats on the field, they'll lose. I guess it's too early for me to really opine, since I haven't looked at OU yet. Just sayin.

Last year's Buckeye starting team was the youngest in the NCAA IIRC. This year they will be among the more experienced.

That said, one thing I have learned from watching and re-watching games is how ofter a "blow out" is a close game that comes down to three or four plays. Having recently rewatched last year's game I would put it in the category of "closer than it looks in the box score." I see no reason for this year to be any different.

Same as last year. Ohio State's secondary was young.

That OSU is nothing like tOSU and you know it. I'm a bit surprised at your bravado considering the result last year. I expect Ohio State to be faster, stronger and more physical just like they were last year.

That said, I was at the VA Tech game in 2014 and anything can happen.

You should probably be more concerned about stopping our run game considering last year we pretty much ran it down OU's throats. Here's a recap of what's changed since last year's beatdown:

OU lost their HC and replaced him with an extremely young, inexperienced coordinator (albeit a promising one), their field-stretching Biletnikoff WR, their best offensive playmaker Mixon who was the only player giving our D fits.

Meanwhile, we massively upgraded our OC and QB coaching positions and have grown from THE youngest team in the entire country into a veteran team. We lost 3 high caliber DB's...like last year.

Oh, and the game is in The Shoe this year.

Not sure where your bravado is coming from, but it can't be from a place of logic.

My friend, OU has a number of positives going for them leading up to this game. First off, we currently have the nation's longest winning streak at 10 games since our loss to you guys last year. We had to throw in a true freshman at corner after losing Zack Sanchez to the draft, he had since lost his starting role to another frosh Jordan Parker who didn't play a snap against you guys. Mike Stoops made the erroneous mistake of not starting our 5-star linebacker Caleb Kelly until late in the season, he also was a non-factor against the Buckeyes. OU returns a two-time Heisman finalist at quarterback, their entire offensive line which averages about 6'6" 320, and OU has seven starters back on a defense that played much better after last year's Texas Tech debacle. Lincoln Riley is a young and energetic coach who has put OU's 2018 class back into the top 10 nationally and is even going hard after 2019 and '20 recruits to bring OU's talent back to a premier level.

We have a deep secondary with Thomas and both Parkers back as starters and our star of the spring was Parnell Motley who may push for a starting spot against you guys. We have an improved defensive line with Gallimore, Romar and Ward and our linebackers are beyond decent with Obo and Caleb Kelly as the main headliners for the OU defense.

I know it's July and the OU team still has to go through preseason drills, practices and scrimmage and our season opener against UTEP, but with a senior Baker Mayfield and a very powerful offensive line, there's plenty of reason for optimism going up against you guys this time around. Forty years ago, our Jerry kicker from Fort Worth kicked the most memorable field goal in OU history against the Woody Hayes-coached Buckeyes at the Horseshoe. How many times will Lincoln play that kick to the entire OU team during the week leading up to the game? There is a lot of momentum right now in the Sooner Nation. In 1973, Chuck Fairbanks abruptly left Norman and was replaced by OU offensive coordinator Barry Switzer. Hmmm...

You say this as if it's a positive for you.

OSU lost 3 starters, like the year before, because they leave early to be 1st rounders in the draft. Last year's secondary was new - and you saw how much they dominated. Now we replace them with just as talented guys. Marshon Lattimore, the 11th overall pick, barely started over Denzel Ward, who will be our #1 now. We brought in the #1 S, #1 CB, #1 JUCO CB, etc.

Not all experience is created equal.

I was feeling pretty good about Ohio States chances up til this.

Now I'm done

We are done. It's hopeless.

You can't argue the 40+ year old field goal science.

Love the positive attitude. Everyone is undefeated in July, so ride that wave. After getting a new coach, OU has as good of a chance as anyone to win a NC in the next four years, right? Only 3 coaches since 2000 have broken the trend of being at the school longer than 4 years.

Year Winning Coach Season at School
2000 Bob Stoops, Oklahoma Second
2001 Larry Coker, Miami First
2002 Jim Tressel, Ohio State Second
2003 Pete Carroll, U.S.C. Third (split title)
Nick Saban, L.S.U. Fourth
2004 Carroll Fourth
2005 Mack Brown, Texas Eighth
2006 Urban Meyer, Florida Second
2007 Les Miles, L.S.U. Third
2008 Meyer Fourth
2009 Saban, Alabama Third
2010 Gene Chizik, Auburn Second
2011 Saban Fifth
2012 Saban Sixth
2013 Jimbo Fisher, Florida St. Fourth
2014 Meyer, Ohio State Third
2015 Saban Ninth
2016 Swinney Ninth

or was it Tom Herman I was thinking would roll off a NC in a few years???

I don't want to scare away our new guest and welcome his input. Nothing disrespectful in his posts at all. But I do agree that if OU wanted to beat us in this series, they probably should have done in last year. UFM won't have this team taking Mark May for granted and they will be ready to play in an early night game in the 'Shoe.

And PS...a Kevin Wilson-ran offense is not going to be an advantage for you compared to a Tim Beck ran offense. Not even close.
