Game Thread Ohio State vs Penn State, 10/28/17 @ 3:30 ET (FOX)

The only reason I don't want their plane to crash on the way to Columbus is because I don't want the nation to give any sympathy to these fucking mutants. Let's just beat them by 80 and break every leg of every good player in the process.

I want to reiterate. The only thing keeping me from wishing death on almost 100 people is that people would be sad about it. If not for that. fuck them all.

I say we force them to field a team and then we try to beat GTech's record.

All of these posts eliminate the need for me to post about this game, because this captures everything I would want to say.

Here is all i am going to say...

OSU lost in Pedville last year on a late blocked FG. They were coming off a bye and the Bucks were coming off a tough OT game at whisky.

We were the better team last year and by fucking gawd we are the better team this year...and Beck is fucking up another program not ours

This is exactly what I am thinking. PSU is really good this year and I am not even going to pretend we have this game locked up. But I honestly like the Bucks at home after the bye...let's return the favor against the Peds. Go Bucks!

After the thorough demolishing of the hairball I thought psu would come in as a 1-3 pt favorite. Opened up with buckeyes -6.5 today. Every time I see a line that looks like easy money it ends up being the sucker bet. Most of the time Vegas tries to get equal money on both sides. Most of the time. You’re gonna see a lot of money go on Penn State and that lines not gonna move much. Before that line came out I was worried. Vegas is never the sucker. Bucks will cover.

Before Saturday, OSU was a 9 point favorite against PSU. One game is not going to move the line much, especially when it's confirming a team is good, rather than exposing a team as bad.

I've heard Jake and others point out time and time again that the lines are just trying to get money even on both sides, which is true... but the sharks are just waiting for the public to push it too far from where it should be to pounce on it. In reality the lines tend to stay within a few points of where the true best estimate indicates they should be due to the natural checks and balances. Teasing the spread by even a couple points shifts the payout by a ridiculous amount. Example using today's MNF game:
  • PHI EVEN (-220)
  • PHI -5 (-110)
  • PHI -7.5 (+155)
If a shark thought the line should be -7.5 but the market has it as -5, they are getting 70% better payout on their bet than they think they should. They are going to hammer the sh*t out of that.

Haven't been this fired up for a (non-tsun) B1G game since the 2013 title game against Sparty. We need this one
I'm ready to explode and its Monday.... I'll go a step further I haven't been this amped for a regular season game since 06' scum game. This is right up there with that one and just like that game I honestly have no idea how this one will go.

On one hand I have to believe two weeks will help us but on the other I am afraid of the individual match ups that cannot be fixed with time. Match ups like Webb vs Geseki or Sheffield vs Hamilton for example are just awful match ups. Awful.

On one hand I have to believe home field will help us but on the other hand we have not been good at home lately in big time games (save against scum).

On one hand I have to think we will be more motivated but again on the other hand we are somehow favorites to win this game (what the actual fuck?)

Having said all of that it'll come down as always to the LOS and IMO ST's. If we can't protect JT and if we can't get to Trace IMO this game will be tough to win. ST's is simple for me to be honest we just can't let ped have good field position and that included blocked field goals, blocked punts, and most importantly allowing Barkley to score on KO's. I say the last part because Barkley isn't going to be caught if he gets into the open field you can say goodbye that's six if he breaks our contain.

Very nervous for this game but very excited for the opportunity.

some numbers to remember from last year for all those worried about how the Buckeyes can hold up against the fearsome Penn State offense

View attachment 16643

McMoxie completed 8 passes

eight

That game was a total fluke and they have played it out for all it's worth

time for a reality check, Urban Meyer style

Holy Mark May. That's last year's stats? How the hell did we lose? I know we didn't miss field goals - except that one that was blocked. We never should have been in a position for a 10-point swing to screw us like that, with those stats. 400+ yards to less than 300 shouldn't be that close in score.

Edit - I just saw the penalty yardage. 45 to 5. I bet that boned us. The refs should be doing this game for free. I said it before: they don't get my "donation" until after they do their job this year.

We got a turnover from Ped when we were up 20-7 with the ball at like the 40 yard line and failed to score. If we score there we win the game. Instead we punt and they made their run from there...

Bottom line in regards to this year you have to be happy we have the edge of revenge. If we had won last year I'd be even more worried about this game.

We rung up 400 yards of offense with a offense that struggled last year now that I look at it in respects to this year. They are out their two best DL's from last year, lost their best CB in the off season, and our offense is light years better this year.

Another thing to consider is who ped has played and who we have played... We should not have a learning curve or a jolt when ped takes the field but I'm not so sure we can say the same thing about them. When our offense takes the field they will not have seen this kind of talent since their loss to USC and they have not been stressed defensively what so ever this year outside of what Indiana? The only team they played that has a somewhat similar offense is Indiana and you have to be encouraged by the results.

INDY-FUCKING-ANNA outrushed Ped 177 to 39 and nearly outgained them. If not for a blocked punt for a score and a kickoff return for Barkley to start that game that's a 1 score game. If we win the rushing numbers 200+ to 50 we will win this game straight up.

Looking at the Indiana game even further.. 5 of 7 Peds scoring drives were roughly 50 yards or LESS. With two TD's being 0 plays and another being a 39 yard drive. Make them drive the field.

Which confirms to me outside of win the LOS... NO SHORT FIELDS and NO BACK BREAKING SPECIAL TEAMS.

Something to keep in mind--Barkley only had 12 touches last year, all runs, and averaged 8.3ypc. We didn't have an answer to him on the ground and their play calling didn't make much sense.

Of course neither did ours-Samuel 2 carries....

Very interesting and surprising stat I saw on ESPN today: Barkley has been stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage on over 20% of his carries
that's interesting. i was looking over psu's advanced stats last night. through 10/14, psu ranked 118th in stuff rate at 24.5%, which is what you're referring to. on the other hand, they ranked 14th in opportunity rate at 44.7%. opportunity rate is the percentage of carries that gain at least five yards when five yards are possible. barkley's individual stats mirror the teams. what this tells me is that psu has a big play rushing attack. sustaining drives may be a bit of a challenge for them, but quick scores are less so. long drives can be demoralizing for the opposition, but meyer and many other coaches stress the importance of big plays for a reason. they're not unlike turnovers.

the stats have yet to be updated through the ttun game. because 69 of barkley's 108 yards came on one play, though, i doubt the stats will change much.

edit: osu is 2nd in stuff rate and 3rd in opportunity rate. for the most part, i take our numbers with a grain of salt. gaining yardage on unlv, rutgers, army, and maryland ain't no thing.

I'm actually Goro from Mortal Combat...

BTW weather.com is calling for 47 degree and 50% chance of rain.

Honestly rain normally isn't great for us but cold weather and rain IMO helps us. They're more reliant of going deep then anything to keep teams honest.

If it has to come down to which team can churn out yards on the ground and stop the run that's us IMO.

Meh. Deja vu going back to Michigan State, 2015. Maybe that was colder, though.

I'm concerned about covering Barkley on pass routes. We may have the defensive backs to hold their wide receivers in check, and maybe we limit Gesicki on his effectiveness. But I worry about what they'll do with Barkley. We couldn't stop the Oklahoma guy - was Flowers his name?

Offensively, ugh - that weather doesn't make me more optimistic, at all. Penn State throws the "50/50" balls - rain might not change those that much. But the rain and cold might make the 90% passes Ohio State throws (the short ones) and make them 65% passes. If they aren't caught cleanly, it might be a pick-6.

Just rewatched last year's game. 3 shots of tequila later and a visit to bwi forum has me in a rage I haven't felt since they stopped making Josta and replaced Lime Skittles with Green Apple (wrote a heavily worded letter to Skittles on that account). Can it be Saturday already? Thank god it's a 330 game.
