NO. 15 OHIO STATE TO BATTLE UCLA SATURDAY IN CHICAGO

  • Starting Five
    • The Ohio State men’s basketball team traveled to Spain for 11 days over the summer. The Buckeyes played a total of three games, one in each stop during the trip, which began Aug. 1 with a flight to Madrid. Three days were spent in Madrid (W, 93-61 vs. Madrid Generals), Valencia (W, 95-63 vs. Valencia All-Stars) and Barcelona (W, 68-66 vs. Catalan All-Stars) before the team returned to Columbus Aug. 11. The team also experienced several cultural tours, team meals and excursions.
    • No Ohio State opponent has made more than 23 field goals this season in a game vs. the Buckeyes. Opponents are shooting 37.1 percent from the field against the Ohio State defense (231-622). Foes are connecting on just 29.7 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (71-239).
    • Ohio State is ranked No. 15/14 in the most recent Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. The Buckeyes are 19-7 all-time when ranked in the No. 15 position and are 508-149 when ranked among the Top 25 in the AP poll. The Buckeyes were 10-5 as a ranked team in 2017-18. Ohio State was ranked No. 17 in the final game of the season vs. No. 6 Gonzaga a year ago in the NCAA Tournament (L, 90-84).
    • The Buckeyes have three wins in four tries in 2018-19 vs. teams that made the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Ohio State defeated two of those teams on the road (Cincinnati, 64-56/Creighton, 69-60) while splitting at home vs. Syracuse (L, 72-62) and Bucknell (W, 73-71). Ohio State has at least six games remaining vs. teams that made the 2018 NCAA Tournament: UCLA, Purdue (2), Michigan State (2) and Michigan
    • Ohio State will play 14 games against teams among the Associated Press Top 25 or receiving votes for Top 25 consideration. Eight of those games will be played away from Value City Arena. The Buckeyes face No. 4 Michigan (away), No. 10 Michigan State (home/away), No. 16 Wisconsin (home), No. 23 Iowa (home/away), No. 22 Indiana (away) and No. 25 Nebraska (away). Among teams receiving votes, Ohio State faces Maryland (home/away), Purdue (home/away), Minnesota (W-home), Cincinnati (W-Away).

    All Andre Wants for Christmas…
Andre Wesson lost two of his front teeth and cracked another in a collision during the Bucknell game Dec. 15 at Value City Arena. Wesson went hard to the floor and had an opponent fall on him resulting in hard contact with the court. Wesson was whisked back to the training room by Ohio State basketball athletic trainer Jeff Deits and team physician Grant Jones. Deits, a former athletic trainer for the Ohio State men’s hockey team, issued Wesson a mouth piece that allowed him to return to the game. Wesson immediately received dental care following the game and will receive additional dental care to repair and replace the lost and damaged teeth. The last time out vs. Youngstown State, Andre’s younger brother, Kaleb, briefly left the game vs. the Penguins after getting an elbow to the face causing one of his teeth to puncture his upper lip. Deits and Dr. Jones again administered treatment, this time a lone stitch, allowing Kaleb to return to the game and ultimately score a game- and career-high 31 points.

    Early Notable Numbers
C.J. Jackson is averaging 12.4 points a game and has the Buckeyes off to a 10-1 start … he reached 100 career 3-pointers made with three makes vs. Cleveland State (11/23/18) … for his Ohio State career he is (110-301/.365) from distance … has scored 742 career points after an 11-point effort vs. Youngstown State and is on pace to become Ohio State’s next 1,000-point scorer … Kyle Young is 32-for-46 shooting this season (.696).

    Scouting The UCLA Bruins
UCLA enters the game vs. the Buckeyes with a 7-4 record after falling at Cincinnati Wednesday, 93-64. Kris Wilkes leads the team with 17.7 points per game. He is one of four Bruins in double figures ahead of Jaylen Hands (11.6 ppg.), Moses Brown (11.8 ppg.) and Prince Ali (10.0 ppg.). Brown is the team’s top rebound with 9.4 boards a game.

The Ohio State vs. UCLA Series
The Buckeyes and Bruins have meet 10 times since the first matchup Dec. 31, 1936 in Los Angeles. Ohio State won that game (48-39) and four of the first five meetings. UCLA has won the last five in the series, including an 86-73 in as part of the CBSSports Classic in 2016. That game was played in Las Vegas Dec. 17, 2016. In games played on neutral courts, UCLA is 3-1 vs. the Buckeyes.

Ohio State vs. The Pac-12 Conference
Ohio State is 39-38 all-time vs. the teams that currently make up the Pac-12 Conference. The Buckeyes have faced each current member of the league at least once with the exception of Colorado. California, who the Buckeyes defeated of the 1960 NCAA Title, has faced the Buckeyes the most (18 games/9-9). Ohio State is 4-6 vs. UCLA. Ohio State last faced a Pac-12 team Nov. 24, 2017 as part of the PK80 event in Portland, Oregon, when the Buckeyes knocked off Stanford, 79-71.

Posted these remarks in the general OSU basketball thread because there was an article where Holtmann was very on-point about this situation and how his team isn't playing well enough right now, but my comments apply here too:

I don't really care if UCLA lost to Belmont and just got smacked around by UC, they have talent and length in their starting line-up and they will probably be extra motivated to try to beat a ranked team on a neutral court to try to stop their losing skid.

I STILL don't know what to think about this Buckeye team. We usually play good D but sometimes not good enough. Sometimes our offense looks almost miraculously competent and other times it looks like I thought it might look before the season started--that is, bad. We don't have much size or length for a high-major and our athleticism is pretty average overall. We have a few skilled guys but mostly we are a team of role players, we don't really have that dynamic player that can do a variety of things well. We've often looked like more than the sum of our parts but in the times where we've looked just like the sum of our parts, it seems like literally anyone could beat us. We haven't played a solid 40 minutes since the Minny game.

We absolutely have to come out strong and focused against UCLA and we have to maintain for the majority of the game. We play a first half nearly as bad as the first half against YSU and the game will be over before the second half.

If we play a first half like we did against YSU against anyone remaining on our schedule, except maybe High Point, and the game will be over at halftime.

As you mentioned in your entire post this team is just not good enough to play at a lower level and expect to win games. I am shocked that we our 10-1 currently. We see spurts from guys on offense but there is not one single parameter player that we can depend upon to make shots. We play a pretty high level defense the majority of the time and if we stop doing that we are in big trouble.

I posted a very similar thread in the Ohio State Basketball official thread.

Or on the flip side they could come out totally deflated and fall further into the abyss. I dont see Alford as some great motivator who switches this around. We will see though.
