Game Thread Ohio State vs UNLV, 09/23/17 @ 12:00 ET (BTN)

Thoughts on the game (totally random order as usual):

1) I don't care if it was UNLV, JT played excellent. Threw the ball extremely well into some pretty tight windows, took some chances without making any dumb plays, and had a few nice touch throws. The touchdown throw to the corner of the endzone on 4th down to McLaurin was a thing of beauty, one of the more difficult throws to make and he put it in the only spot his receiver could have caught that. I will say I am a little concerned on the interactions between him and Haskins (or lack thereof). Maybe I am reading into it to much, but I did not see those two talking the entire game. First touchdown for Haskins and JT looked emotionless. You would think the communication would be there throughout the game and brief camera shots can be deceptive, but to me it looked like those two are at odds. I hope I'm wrong.

2) Love the utilization of Victor on the jump ball, he can be a threat there. Want to see him get more looks.

3) Sheffield is not looking that great...constantly getting caught for PI and just doesn't look comfortable out there. Although he definitely has time and maybe he is just having a couple bad showings, I would really like to see more Okudah/Wade. Okudah I really want to see more of...really aggressive player and he just looks hungry to me (on top of being maybe the purely most talented DB in the room).

4) In my eyes, Fuller is head and shoulders above Smith right now at safety. He looked great out there, very sure tackler and sound coverage. Smith is missing some tackles.

5) Rashod Berry excites me, what a fantastic touchdown. The late fumble is understandable, 4th down and he was almost across the goalline. Also seems to be a very good blocker. You have to think he earned himself some PT today.

6) Haskins made a couple really stupid throws (to be expected of a freshman) but damn can he throw the ball. That first touchdown to Saunders was as pinpoint as you can be. Had great command of the offense, lots of confidence and he just looks like a field general out there. JT is our QB, but Haskins' future here is very bright.

7) CJ Saunders seriously looks like a player...walk on or not, he may have earned some PT. Damn he looks good.

8) Again, Joe Burrow looked really good out there in his short stint. As good as Haskins is, he will have to fend off Burrow...Joe can play.

9) The receiver group as a whole looked great today. Made some huge plays, blocked well and executed. Campbell is a playmaker I see breaking away right now, just have to get him the ball a ton...has made mistakes but always rebounds extremely well, mature player that I love to see him do so well.

10) To state the obvious, the DL is so good it is just not even fair. Bosa in particular looked fantastic today but the depth and talent is just unreal.

11) The freshmen: A lot of guys flashed, so fun to see them get in and play. Browning is superbly athletic, Young is clearly going to be a star, and Pryor looks like he is going to excellent. Already mentioned Okudah but he looked good too. Then on offense, Harris and Grimes caught every ball thrown to them and just imagining throwing those guys out there with Victor in the future is just going to create matchup nightmares for defenses. And its not like those guys are just tall, gimmicky receivers that you can only utilize in the redzone, both guys are versatile.

12) Thought the OL play looked pretty darn good today, first and second string.

13) Special teams looked very good mostly. Great kickoff coverage, big return from Campbell, and I think Chrisman looks fantastic, he is going to be a great punter here. Easy to overlook this aspect of the game but the special teams needs to keep it up and keep improving, we have to have good special teams play.

- Overall I thought we improved and we got some very valuable playing time for our young guys. Definitely some mistakes made by our backups but that will also serve as great experience moving forward. Not a bad job at all and a fun game to watch. Go Bucks!

define "really rolling"

Honestly just not being outscored in the second half would've been a great start...

When I look back on it we turned it over twice inside the 2 yard line, gave up a pick 6, gave up a shit TD against our back ups and gave them the other one with literally 45 yards of penalties in one drive.

If we play more disciplines and just hold onto the ball may be i wouldn't have come away from this game thinking there just wasn't much a flow for us.

Can't turn the ball over three times obviously and I personally would've liked to have seen the game plan from last week as well.

We hear UFM talk about the RPO is the directive and we want to do more of the quick throws out wide but then we don't really work off that? To me that's why I said it was a wasted day when it comes to how we approached it game plan wise

We were clearly the more physically gifted team and I think that's how we won the game. It will be interesting to see what we do when the team is every bit as talented next game we have against PSU. When we are forced to counter someone.

For anyone who was at the game today or any game so far really, do we have receivers just streaking by defenders on a regular basis? I see a lot of talk about JT and the long ball but I've seen plenty of drops from guys that have had their man beat as well. It feels like when I watch games on TV at least once or twice a game announcers are talking about a receiver running wide open and the QB just didn't see them. I don't see or hear it much with the Buckeyes or JT.

I will say one last thing on this and be done with it. Wilson clearly is working on evolving the offense and working in more wrinkles as we go. This is why I feel much better about him then Beck and Warriner. Under Beck you would have seen the same exact offense every game and it would have worked in 3 of the 4 games cause we were clearly more talented. Meanwhile under Wilson the last 2 weeks you have seen us working on different concepts and wrinkles to add to the offense.

It was true of the Oklahoma game. He had receivers open that he wouldn't throw it too or threw it 2 seconds too late. The pick vs Oklahoma was the right decision thrown way too late. He looked much more in rhythm today with the ball out when he hit the bottom of his drops. I fell like he might have missed a few guys streaking deep just by how often Haskins was hitting people deep today but the ball was coming out on time at least.

Hmmm I thought the OU DB's got to put their hands all over our guys with no laundry being thrown. Don't really want to have to watch the replay tho.

I feel like he has been working a jig saw puzzle. He might have the four corners done. Now it's time to put the whole thing together and fill in the big picture.

When the backups come in, I prefer to view the performances of each player in isolation rather than as a whole. That might sound like an excuse, but the truth is that the 2nd-3rd string playing in a mish-mash rotation provides zero cohesiveness that you will see with the first string/regular players. That means breakdowns will happen and garbage points will get put up. To be clear, all the points scored by UNLV today were garbage points.

So if you score which team scored the most garbage points then yeah, there would be cause for concern. I get the preference being complete dominance and I am sure UFM will not be happy about some of those points. That is natural. But are there systemic issues that showed through in this game? No. The reality of it is that we would have probably beat them 90-0 if we wanted to just set records. That is not what we were trying to accomplish today for obvious reasons. I left encouraged after this game, albeit that I understand UNLV is terrible and realize that we won't know anything definitive about our team after this game. All I know is that we made some progress today and I had fun watching the game.

Was there anyone you thought showed that they might play better in game than they do in practice? I know the reps at practice are kind of limited for the younger guys. Seemed like a lot of them got a bunch of snaps today.

Haskins and Saunders showed me something. Though Haskin's also showed me why he's the backup forcing a bad throw that there was no reason to throw and when he was rushed he tended to drop his eyes.
