Game Thread Ohio State vs UNLV, 09/23/17 @ 12:00 ET (BTN)

I agree. I think the past 2 games have been positive too. JT was on the money today. Yes, he missed that one pass pretty badly. It happens. I don't agree with the people who say "this short passing game won't work against good teams." Why not? Tell me how many college teams have passing offenses built around the deep ball if you think that. We will have an edge in athletes in almost every game we play. Let's get the ball in their hands and see what happens. We seem to be doing that now.

I agree. Clemson destroyed us with bubble screens in the '14 Orange Bowl. Baker Mayfield shredded us with short passes off RPOs. This downfield passing dream is a myth. Go all the way back to Terry Glenn. He won the Belitnekoff. Did he only catch deep balls?

High risk / high reward right? It'd be nice to be able to have JT go over the top and be confident that it was going to connect... but let's be honest, that's not reality for JT or frankly many QBs. We see it in highlights and due to The availability heuristic we think that everyone is going over the top and connecting. That's by they are highlights. Not everyone is connecting. That's why it's high risk. I'll give you that some are connecting at a (much) higher rate, but still...

How many of us watched Cardale's Stand(tm) and were amazed by how often he connected with Smith. While it clearly opened up things at the LOS for the run game (mind you with some spectacular WR blocking) it was an anomaly. There were plenty of balls that could have, and I'd argue that if God wasn't wearing S&G that year should have, fallen to the turf.

I loved '14 and how much fun it was to watch JT pick apart defenses and distribute the ball. I look forward to more of it and the couple of times that he does connect on the long ball.
