Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

Well, February went in like a lion, but crept out like a lamb. Same with the Lady Bucks today. Up 22-6 at the end of the first quarter, it looked like the Celtics against the local high school team. Great passing, shooting, blocking out, and aggressive defense. Then tOSU turnovers started occurring. There were many, and most of tOSU's TOs turned into points for Rutgers. Not so the same for Rutger's TOs. Croom had, I believe, at least 13 TOs. Her bullet passes of the first quarter found Buckeyes alone under the basket for easy shots. Second half, they were out of reach, or (in Dorkas case), trying to catch a fastball standing 10 feet away. Ain't gonna happen. Rutgers huddled up at halftime, and schemed a way to break tOSU pressure. And installed a press of their own. Worked pretty darn well. More turnovers for the good gals. Then Rutgers started lighting up the 3-balls. And tOSU panicked, looked lost, gave up, I dunno. Not the same team that came out charging.....speaking of which, think tOSU had about half a dozen charges. Rutgers kept clawing back, and for a bit, it looked like tOSU would hang on for the W. Give Rutgers credit, they used their long and tall muscle under the basket, and effectively bottled up and shut down anyone wearing white in the paint. First half, tOSU outscored (in the paint), something like 24-4. But for the game, Rutgers had 16 (?) Offensive rebounds, versus 1 for the Buckeyes. Finally, our kids got tired. Only saw about 9 people play, and three (on the bench) never took off their warm--ups. Still there were some good things to take away, just more bad things that happened to let the game slip away. Hopefully the good gals will get some rest, put this behind them, and make a run in the B10 tourney. Want to see them get by Meatchicken (kept the 4th seed), and then tee it up again against Rutgers for the rubber game. Senior Day, so Grande and Santoro, along with Waterman will sail into the sunset. Never really saw much of the other three grad transfers. Oh yeah, one of Rutgers starters, Sierra Calhoun, was a starter for tOSU last year, and played pretty well for us. She contributed, but not so much for the opposition today. Go Bucks! Figure it out and rebound (literally and figuratively)..

No. 5 OSU will face the winner of the No. 12 Penn State vs. No. 13 Wisconsin matchup (1:30 p.m. ET, BTN). The Buckeyes will kick off their tournament on Thursday afternoon on the Big Ten Network, 25 minutes after the No. 8 Northwestern vs. No. 9 Michigan State game ends.

Ohio State swept both potential opponents in the regular season (PSU 76-71 (OT), 78-73; UW 70-68, 61-50), however, they dropped their only game to their potential quarterfinal opponent, No. 4 ttun, 62-58 Away from home

Again, a tale of two halves. tOSU came out like gangbusters, and everything went pretty nicely. Halftime adjustments, and all of a sudden there was no O, other than Carmen Grande putting up threes. Crooms was hesitant about her drives, sloppy D, allowing multiple layups. A +10 lead, went to a -10 pretty darn fast. Wiscy closed on our three point shooters, Dorkas did great work under the boards, but wasn't getting fed the ball, lots of passing, but no one cutting. Hate to say, but Wiscy played like a team possessed in second half, and nothing we could do to slow. Again, appears to me that McGuff (or his assts) had nothing worthwhile to say to his troops to stop Wiscy's run(s). He's a great recruiter, but not much of a sideline coach. And don't see any of the assts getting in the middle of the huddle to make some adjustments 'on the fly'. All in all, a good season with a brand new team, believe they over-achieved, and came together towards the end. Six grad (5 xfers plus Waterman), and three freshwomen, plus Caretti doesn't leave much room for fresh legs to come in. Last couple of games, believe the ladies got pretty winded. So, with four returnees, and four new frosh, could there be some more grad transfers in the wind? Get up to the fourteen schollies allowed, so A) can have real practices; B), can work some substitutions and give some bench time to rest. Haven't seen any B10 awards, but one, and Dorkas made all freshman team. go Bucks.

When does he:huh: Might be time for a change. I mean the guy can recruit, sort of, but he cannot coach the talent or the lack thereof.

Edit: He has 5 recruits coming in next season. Four are from the United States and one is from Spain. He has the #4 ranked recruiting class in the country behind South Carolina, Stanford, and Maryland…
He has also given out two commitments for the following year. 2 recruits, who are un-ranked, from Westerville South.
