    Women's hockey brawl sets record

There were no Miss Congeniality awards handed out Friday night in Columbus, Ohio, when the Ohio State women’s hockey team took on Bemidji State. In fact, it was quite the opposite.
The two teams combined for a mere 16 penalty minutes by the time the horn sounded to end the WHCA game, but after the clock ran out and Bemidji State had taken the game 3-2, the benches cleared and an all-out brawl ensued on the ice.
The result was 18 fighting majors, and accompanying game disqualifications, being assessed to nine members of each squad. Throw on another major and game DQ for grabbing the facemask and one minor for instigating, and you’ve got 287 penalty minutes for the postgame fight alone.
Along with the 16 penalty minutes from the game, an NCAA-record 303 total penalty minutes were doled out — more than have ever been assessed in a college hockey game, men or women, Division I or Division III, according to U.S. College Hockey Online. The previous record had been 268 penalty minutes, tallied by Boston University and Maine on Jan. 24, 2004.
The record for a Division I women’s game was 83, set by Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth on Dec. 14, 2003.

Must See: Ohio State goaltender might be the hottest athlete in NCAA

Ohio State goaltender Maggie Cory is generating some serious buzz across social media this week, as a result of a new profile pic that she uploaded to Twitter.

Not since Manon Rheaume have so many men fallen in love with a goaltender. Piercing eyes and gorgeous blonde hair aside, we’re big fans of her brand new all red set up for 2017-18, as well. The Minnesota native is poised to do big things with the Buckeyes this season and you can bet that she’ll have a few more sets of eyes on her this time around.

May be if she was put on the men's team, it would give them a little extra incentive to "protect" her among other things.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY SWEEPS MAVERICKS, HEADS TO SEMIS

Game. Set. Match. Second seed Ohio State women’s hockey rolled to a 5-2 win over seventh seed Minnesota State. The Buckeyes swept their best-of-three WCHA quarterfinal series, 2-0. For the first time in five years, the Bucks are going to the conference semis.

OSU picked up in Game 2 right where it left off in Game 1. Maddy Field and Emma Maltais racked up a 2-0 Buckeye lead by the first intermission break. Lauren Boyle added another goal in the second period.

As they did last night, the Mavericks cranked up their attack in the middle frame. But, once again, rookie goalie Amanda Zeglen was ready for them. She made 16 saves in the second period alone, yielding only one goal against. Zeglen stopped 29 shots in all and backstopped her fifth victory over Minnesota State.

Field further insured the Buckeye win with a third period tally. The junior forward was practically unstoppable this week. Today’s pair of goals brings her series total to five and her season total to 18. If she collects just one more point this season Field will reach the 30 point mark for the second straight year.

Tatum Skaggs sealed the deal with an empty net goal in the final minute. Ohio State (23-9-4) cruised to a 5-2 win. The Bucks now advance to the WCHA Final Faceoff in Minneapolis.

This is Ohio State’s tenth trip to the conference semifinals but it has been awhile for the Bucks. Their last semis appearance was in 2013. The Buckeyes have advanced to the championship game only once (2001).

Regular season champ Wisconsin faces the lowest remaining seed after the first round. So, barring a St. Cloud comeback, the Bucks are headed for another battle with Minnesota. Both conference semis will be contested next Saturday. Then the WCHA tournament championship and NCAA tourney auto-bid will be decided on Sunday afternoon.

    ORD_Buckeye Wrong glass, Sir.

Four seed is a bit disappointing. I was hoping that we'd drop down no lower than a 3.

EDIT: Shit, it's an 8 team tournament, so we are essentially seeded 5th. So that's not bad.

Helluva showing by the B1G this year. Three out of the 8 spots in the women's tournament, and we're a lock to get 4 into the men's with Minnesota on the bubble as a potential 5th.
