Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Bad news for the Bucks, wonder what the story is here?

Cadet world champion Greg Kerkvliet has entered the transfer portal and will transfer from Ohio State University before ever taking the mat in a Buckeye singlet.

FloWrestling confirmed Kerkvliet's status in the portal but are unaware of a future destination for the Minnesota native. As a two-time age-level UWW medalist, Kerkvliet has the option of taking an Olympic redshirt this season while maintaining the option to defer another year of eligibility in the future.

Kerkvliet recently wrapped up participation at the 2019 U23 World Championships in Budapest where he placed fifth at 125kg.

I'd have to think PSU to train with Snyder?

Probably and this sucks. I knew Snyder's move would hurt with recruiting, but didn't fathom that this would happen. Makes sense in retrospect, Kerkvliet pretty much cares only about his future Olympic hopes, not the college he wrestles for. So following Snyder makes sense.

Side note though: Thanks for screwing us Kerkvliet when we could have had other prospects. Will actively root against him wherever he goes. It's a dick move to commit, lock up a 100% scholarship (which in wrestling means a lot and hamstrings the program), and bolt before you even wrestle for the school. I know that sounds harsh, but given the circumstances, it's accurate. I hope he's a bust.

Wrestling starts TODAY! Most of our guys are wrestling in the Michigan State Open today. Overall a great start heading into quarters, but I'll do a full report when it's concluded. There's some really interesting developments, including Kinner dropping to 133. Loaded tournament this year compared to past years, should be a really good gauge for our team early on.

Overall, impressive performance. But there are some really confusing results from the MSU Open. Anyways, breakdown below:

125: Malik took 6th. Extremely disappointing, he has to do better or else this weight is a weak spot. Don't want to be too negative, but not much positive to take from here.
133: Quinn Kinner dropped down here, and took 4th. Really tough weight at the tourney, not a bad performance. Surprised he was able to cut down to 133, that is a huge weight cut.
141: Pletcher you badass. Plows through the tournament and beats the #1 guy in the country in the finals. Awesome tournament from Luke and he looks great wrestling up, he is in for a big year. Should move up to #1.
149: Sasso teched or pinned everyone he faced...this kid is the real deal. Will compete for the title this year, seriously think he is that good. Get to know this kid, he is seriously talented. On another note, Keyshawn Hayes wrestled at this weight and lost to the kid Sasso teched in the finals. Hayes probably needs to bump up to 157, he is not beating Sasso.
157: No placer...Cleary and Mattox didn't place. Need Hayes up here.
165: Kharchla got bonus points in all but one match in winning the tournament. This kid is the real deal.
174: This weight is the biggest surprise by a landslide. The good news is that Romero won a very stacked weight. Bad news is Rocky got hurt and ended up taking 6th. Might need to take a redshirt. Hopefully Romero is ready to go, he looked great this weekend.
184: At a loss for words here...Hoffman only won one match and didn't place. No idea what is going on here, but have to think there is an injury or a weight problem. He was a stud last year.
197: Kollin killed everyone until the finals, where he won in SV against a kid from OK.
HWT: Traub took 4th and wrestled extremely well. Kid is a great backup to Singletary. More on this weight in my next post.

Got a nice dual matchup on Saturday with Stanford. Probable lineups below. Some real interesting stuff. Looks like its Kinner at 133, that is exciting if he can hold that weight, seems like a huge cut. Curious to see how Malik does against a closely ranked opponent in a winnable match. Sasso's guy is a Blair grad that is hella tough and could present an interesting matchup (though he probably smashes him, Sammy is a monster). Looks like Smith at 165, wondering if Kharchla is getting a break or is hurt? Either way, tough matchup for Smith, but winnable. Romero gets the nod at 174 and understandably after he won the MSU Open and Rocky had a rough tournament to say the least. Fyi on that though, I guess Rocky was pretty hurt for the tourney...wish that kid could stay healthy. Looks like either of Hoffman or Steiner at 184, that weight might be a yard sale all year. And Kollin has a very tough opponent, but I predict he rolls.
