Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Traub drops a 6-0 decision. Bucks win the dual 24-13. Nice win.

WRESTLING: KOLLIN MOORE GETS 100TH CAREER WIN AS NO. 4 OHIO STATE WALLOPS NO. 8 WISCONSIN 24-13 IN MADISON

Kollin Moore reached the century mark as a Buckeye, winning his 100th career victory in vintage form, earning a 21-3 tech fall. Luke Pletcher, Sammy Sasso and Rocky Jordan joined him in the bonus category as the Buckeyes rolled through six matches in a 24-13 victory on the road.

Moore's match was everything you expect from the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 197 pounds, with takedowns aplenty and back points that allowed him to race out to an insurmountable lead in the first period and to seal the tech fall in the second. It was a perfect showcase of his skills in his 100th win.

Wisconsin looked very much like they had what it took to pull off the upset in the UW Field House at the top of the evening, winning the first two bouts of the night and racing out to a 7-0 lead. No. 20 Jordan Decatur dropped a major decision to Seth Gross, the No. 1 man in the country at 133 pounds and a likely repeat as NCAA Champion.

From there on out it was almost all Buckeyes, with Pletcher and Sasso scoring back-to-back majors at 141 and 149, both over ranked opponents.

Pletcher, ranked No. 1 in the country in his class, faced a fourth-ranked opponent in Tristan Moran who earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors last week after beating No. 3 Mitch McKee of Minnesota in a 7-6 decision and No. 9 Chad Red of Nebraska, 9-4. Pletcher took him to the woodshed in an 11-3 major that showcased what a leap Pletcher has made this season, as it was all offense from the senior captain.

Sasso won his bout by major decision on the strength of an 8-point first period in which he planted No. 13 Cole Martin with a nifty inside trip, and proceeded to tack on a half-dozen back points. Sasso faded last week late in a match against Rutgers, but didn't repeat that mistake this time, scoring a takedown with literally two seconds left in the third period to seal the bonus point win for his team.

First time I've seen Sasso wrestle, he was very impressive.

Sasso has unreal talent and technique. He honestly could win it all at NCAAs, he is that good. But he needs consistency and stamina, he's got gassed out a few times this year and slipped up. He is a freshman, so that isn't shocking, but he has time this year to work towards that and lately he has looked great. He will face the #1 ranked guy at 149 on January 24th in Iowa's Pat Lugo, will be a big chance for him to make a statement.

On dual meets, we are undefeated after beating an ASU team that beat PSU at full strength and a convincing win last night against a great Wisconsin team on the road. This team has maximized its roster to get those wins with the injuries at 157 and Heavyweight. They will have a very tough one on January 24th in #1 Iowa though, especially with it being at Iowa. It is likely going to look like this:

125: #1 Lee vs. Heinselman (likely a tech or pin for Lee)
133: #2 DeSanto vs. DeCatur (tough match for DeCatur, its a win if he doesn't give up bonus)
141: #6 Murin vs. #1 Pletcher (going to need bonus from Pletcher, but tough to ask against an undefeated Murin)
149: #1 Lugo vs. Sasso (Sammy could pull off the upset, but it will be tough)
157: #6 Young vs. Cleary (likely bonus here, probably a MD)
165: #2 Marinelli vs. #13 Smith (maybe bonus here but Marinelli flipping to Iowa from OSU continues to haunt us)
174: #2 Kemerer vs. #9 Romero (tough match for Kaleb but one he needs to compete in if he wants to be on the podium this year...great match)
184: #10 Assad vs. Jordan (this is a match Rocky can compete in and win if he wrestles to his potential...but probably an L the way he has wrestled this year, although last night was a glimmer of hope)
197: #1 Moore vs. #4 Warner (tough match for Kollin, Warner is a stud...tough to ask for bonus here)
Hvy: #3 Cassioppi vs. Traub (love Gas Tank, but will probably be an easy win for Cassioppi)

- Iowa is about as stacked as a team can be. Not a single wrestler outside the top 10, not sure I have ever saw that before. Even in the best case scenario, this will likely be a double-digit loss.

DECADE IN REVIEW: OHIO STATE WRESTLING'S BIGGEST MOMENTS ON THE MAT

111668_h.jpg

The 2010s were Ohio State's biggest decade in the history of the wrestling program, without question.

Tom Ryan’s teams captured the 2015 NCAA championship and finished as national runner-up in 2017, 2018, and 2019, capping a five-year streak of top-three finishes at the tournament. With four Buckeyes winning a combined nine individual NCAA titles and five finishing as four-time All-Americans over the past 10 years, we asked Ryan and assistant head coach J Jaggers to pick their favorite moments of the past decade.

10. OHIO STATE BEATS IOWA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 46 YEARS

When the 2012 Buckeyes hosted the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes in St. John Arena in late January, history was not in their favor. The last time the scarlet and gray had defeated the black and gold on the mat, Lyndon Johnson was President of the United States (Feb. 12, 1966).

A team of underclassman did something nearly five decades of their predecessors could not, however, as the Buckeyes downed Iowa Jan. 20 in a 21-9 romp, putting Tom Ryan's team in the win column against his alma mater for the first time in 46 years. Some 5,684 fans participated in the white out at St. John Arena, watching Ryan pick up his 181st career win and make a little bit of history.

9. THREE FOUR-TIME ALL AMERICANS ON ONE ROSTER

Ohio State fielded a lot of elite talent over the past 10 years, and the latter years of the decade featured rosters that consistently qualified as many or more wrestlers for the NCAA Championship as any team in the country. The 2017-2018 squad epitomized the success the Buckeyes had on the recruiting trail throughout the decade, finishing the season as NCAA Championship runners-up for a second-consecutive season.

The Buckeyes finished the season with a school record eight All Americans, and as the only team in history to have three four-time All Americans on the same roster. Kyle Snyder, Nathan Tomasello and Bo Jordan represented one of the most-successful senior classes in program history, having won three Big Ten titles and an NCAA championship during their four years in scarlet and gray.

"I'll look back at my career at Ohio State and just be thankful for not what I was able to achieve, but all the moments and camaraderie and experience I've had with my teammates and coaches, and my improvement as a wrestler and as a man and my faith especially, all that's grown so much," Snyder said. "So that's what I'll look back on."

8. NATHAN TOMASELLO WINS FOUR BIG TEN TITLES

NaTo was a special talent. The Parma, Ohio native was a four-time All American who never placed lower than third at the NCAA tournament and was a four-time Academic All Big Ten selection to boot.

His senior season capped an incredible career with a little bit of history, too, becoming just the 15th wrestler in Big Ten history to capture four individual conference titles. Wrestling the entire season with a torn ACL, Tomasello battled back from injury to win his fourth Big Ten championship and cement his status as one of Ohio State's all time bests.

7. FINISHING IN THE TOP 3 AT THE NCAA TOURNEY FIVE YEARS IN A ROW

Since Tom Ryan took the reins of Ohio State's wrestling program, his teams have finished outside the Top 8 at the NCAA Tournament only twice. For the past five years they've inhabited truly rarified air, bringing home a team trophy five years running, and have been national runners-up in each of the past three seasons.

The trophy case in the new Jennings Family Wrestling Facility has lots and lots of hardware.

6. WINNING THREE BIG TEN TEAM TITLES

For teams of Ohio State's caliber, the goal will always be NCAA championships... but given that the Big Ten is the premier wrestling conference in the country, winning Big Ten titles matters almost as much. Ohio State won three of those over the past 10 years, bringing home the bacon in 2015, 2017 and 2018, upending the eventual NCAA-champion Nittany Lions in '17 and '18.

Huge win tonight. We were going to beat Illinois, but the individual performances are impressive. Malik and DeCatur were disappointing to start off, but we never looked back after that. Rocky beat the #11 guy in the country and that is just a huge win for him and the team....Rocky can beat just about anyone, this will help his confidence. Then you have Romero and Smith getting big time wins against guys ranked right near them. Kollin pins his guy and then Gas Tank Gary (TM pending) beats the hell out of a good opponent. Not going to beat Iowa, but we look good.
