Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Misread the broadcast as ESPN+ so I couldn't watch vs Maryland today. Bummer
Wow that IS a bummer! In case you didn't see the results, here they are...

125 Almost over before the opening whistle. Heinselman with total domination in a 16-0 tech.
133 Sandoval (Mary) surprised Koontz with an early gator roll takedown and rolled from there in a 10-0 major.
141 I told you guys D'Emilio was ready for an unseeded match and he was Pin in 1:35.
149 Sasso wrestled a guy from Wadsworth (Mike North) who avoided the cradle as long as he could but lost 24-5 tech.
157 Hubbard surprised the crowd with a cradle fall of his own in 41 sec.
165 Again domination by Kharchla. Almost like he was asking the crowd to suggest pinning combination requests! TF early in 2nd.
174 Smith didn't wrestle. Announcers didn't give a reason.Fritz Schierl came off the bench with a 5-2 dec. over Solis.
184 Romero had a #12 ranked opponent who had beat several ranked guys himself. Kaleb took him down twice and beat him 6-2.
197 Hoffman looking better. Had 3 1st period takedowns on way to 10-3 dec.
285 Lotsa dancing as there always seems to be in Tate's matches, but he got a 3rd period td and laid on the guy the rest of the match for a 4-1 dec.
No more matches now until Feb 4th @ PSU.

It was Maryland but hey, that's a great performance in all of our matches really. Keeping my expectations within the realm of possibility and just enjoying the individual performances this year. We're well aware (or should be) that this team is not in the ballpark of top 3 nationally. That's fine, every year can't be our year. But wrestling is fun because even if the team is somewhat down, the individual performances are worth watching. Hope we pique to the extent possible in February and into the championships with some momentum.

Basketball Bucks snowed out this weekend but the wrestlers are on their way to (un)happy valley to do battle w ith the undefeated Nits. Here are the matchups...

125 #11 Malik Heinselman vs #7 Drew Hildebrandt
133 Dylan Koontz vs #1 Roman Bravo-Young
141 #24 Dylan D'Emilio vs #1 Nick Lee
149 #2 Sammy Sasso vs #15 Beau Bartlett
157 Jashon Hubbard vs Terrell Barraclough or Tony Negron
165 #4 Carson Kharchla vs #10 Brady Berge
174 #7 Ethan Smith vs #1 Carter Starocci
184 #5 Kaleb Romero vs #1 Aaron Brooks
197 #20 Gavin Hoffman vs #2 Max Dean
285 #13 Tate Orndorff vs #3 Greg Kerkvleit
With 4 #1s and a 2 and a 3, it's looking very one-sided. 125,157,165,174,and 184 should be competitive. FLO predicts OSU at 125 and 165 only. I'm still with Sasso and Kharchla and maybe an upset like Hubbard. After this match it's on to Rutgers on Sunday.

Going to have to just look away at the team score and focus on individual performances on this match, could very well only win a couple matches or so. But as you said, there could be quite a few competitive matches that are fun to watch that you already listed, though we seem to get steamrolled in Happy Valley. I could see potential upsets in our favor at 125 and 174, or 184, but could also see us getting upset at 165 or 149. But wrestling is fun to watch no matter what, looking forward to it.

Couple sites reporting Sanderson is holding back two of his stars tonight. If rumors are true Starocci (#1 at 174) and Berge (#10 at 165)
will not wrestle. No news on reason, just speculation they are "tired from the big Iowa match".

Part of this match was like watching a JV match and part was like watching the country's best team asserting their domination. Adds up to a 32-7 score with 2 wins and 3 losses in SV. Also had 2 pinfalls against us by #1 wrestlers. Here's how it went down..

125 Heinselman lost 2-0 primarily because he had no riding ability or ability to get out. So Hildebrant won despite not scoring an offensive point.
133 Brady Koontz won a moral victory by making Roman Bravo-Young go into the 2nd period before pinning him.
141 D'Emilio fought hard as he always does but fell by MD to Nick Lee.
149 Sasso put on his typical show of great defense, scrambling, and winning in the last seconds, this time over Bartlett 4-2.
157 Must admit I'd forgotten Isaac Wilcox was on the team. He wrestled well against their backup Barraclough but was taken down in SV which became a recurrent theme.Halftime score 16-3.
165 Kevon Freeman filled in for Kharchla. He went to Mentor Lake Cath. where he was a 3-time state champ. No tds in 1st, and I felt pretty good when Freeman rode Edsell out in the 2nd. But Edsell returned the favor in the 3rd and then won it in SV with a scramble/advantage.
174 Ethan Smith vs. Mason Manville, a guy who got his degree in 2017 and is still eligible (??). Smith had 4 tds in 1st and rolled to a 19-7 major.
184 #1 Aaron Brooks wrestled Rocky Jordan who did well--for 1 period(down 2-1). He lost by a fall early in the 2nd and it was a bad call by the ref as the replay showed his shoulders were off the mat, but you kinda knew that would eventually be the result at some point so whatever.
197 Probably the best match of the night as Hoffman lost in SV to #2 Max Dean. Again, lack of a ride cost a Buckeye a match as Hoffman got a late reversal to go up 3-2 but couldn't ride Dean out.
285 Kerkvleit majored Orndorff to make the final score32-7.

Both teams rested two starters No reason was given by the BTN announcers. Looking forward to a full squad on Sunday vs.Rutgers.

What’d you think on the reversal for Hoffman? I don’t know much about it, but it seems to me that if the refs had time give the 1, that it would be escape and takedown.

That's one of those "borderline calls" that you have to live with. I can see how it could have been called either way. Coach Ryan threw the brick maybe because it was near the end of the night and there was no point in saving it any longer. The egregious mistake the refs made was the pin they gave
Brooks against Jordan but like I said above that result was going to be inevitable anyway. Hang in there, better days are coming!

Thanks! The announcers definitely agreed with it, but having listened to enough football announcers that don't know jack but still speak definitively, I didn't know whether to trust them.

Anyone need a 2-time All-American 141 pounder in their lineup next year? Oklahoma University r.s. senior and Columbus native Dom Demas has entered the Transfer Portal. He will have 1 yr. of eligibility left next season. He is currently unable to compete because of injury(not sure what). He was a 2 time state champ at Dublin Coffman and has achieved All-American honors twice at OU. Also his brother Josh wrestled at Ohio St. Don't have any info on if Coach Ryan is interested since the thinking is Mendez will be a 141 next year...unless the new recruits are redshirting. Another rumor is that Oklahoma may be ready to dump Coach Rosselli which could explain Demas leaving. Stay tuned!
