Baseball has similar numbers.
Basically it gets divided up in halves and quarter schollies and it's entirely on the coaches. I kinda doubt anyone is on a full ride.

Given the scholarship allocation for wrestling, it is actually pretty rare to get a full ride. Many wrestlers are on partial scholarships. That being said, you would think that the top recruits would leverage for a full ride, but recently it has kind of been the opposite with wrestling. You have top guys taking less money to go to a school where they can win a championship rather than taking a full ride. Penn State was the first team I saw kick off that phenomenon...there were a ton of top guys taking way less money to go try to win a championship.
Now you are seeing it a little bit more at the wrestling powerhouses, including Ohio State. Recently, there has to be some guys taking way less to come to Columbus. The most amazing thing about Tom Ryan's recruiting isn't just the fact that he is getting tons of top guys, but that he has to be convincing many of them to take less than a full ride when you know they are getting full ride offers or darn near it at some very good schools. Really cool to see wrestlers take that selfless approach in an era where putting the team first is becoming a lost concept in college athletics.

It's a huge advantage for sure, as is having the guys that we've had in there such as Tervel, Jaggers, Stieber and Snyder. The top guys can actually go out and make some good money after college wrestling on the international scene if they are successful internationally and work the right sponsorships. The RTC is a big tool to get you there and the recent success that has come out of that building attests to it. It provides a huge advantage to our OSU guys to have the RTC right there in the offseason when they hit the freestyle season. I know it played a big role in Kerkvliet's commitment and I think you will see it continue to help in the future.

High School wrestling kicked off with the Super 32 tournament, which in my eyes is easily the toughest tourney in the country now with the talent and size of the event. Buckeye commitment Dylan D'Emilio had an amazing tournament at 132 and won the whole thing...knocked off a ton of highly ranked guys to do so. Really hoping the future lineup can shake out with two Decaturs and D'Emilio from 125-141. Also, Connor Brady from Olentangy Liberty won it all at 152, huge win for him...VA Tech commit, wish he could have found his way to OSU, he will be a good one.

Didn't have a full lineup obviously, but not entirely thrilled with the results of the dual overall (with the massive caveat that it is the first match of the year).The positives first though. Mic absolutely killed it in tech falling a ranked opponent...go watch him in the video in the link that @ScriptOhio provided, that was one of the dirtiest combos I have ever seen and racked up 7 points real quick. Also, unreal that Joey McKenna in less than 24 hours went from dualing and beating Brock, to getting another win...might have been 3-2 against an unranked opponent, but I honestly didn't even think he would wrestle in this dual...kid has earned my respect for sure, glad to see a captain man up like that and go the extra mile. Joey and Mic will definitely need to lead the team this year. Also, Martin killed it as expected.
The bad...I am going to keep it brief, because it is one dual meet and the first live wrestling we have had all year. Romero won at 165 in a last second takedown and I am a little worried here...he barely won the wrestle-off at his weight and he was a top ranked kid that should be killing it at his weight...I trained him as a kid and he has a ton of offense, super athletic, so I hope he is just getting his feet under him. 197 and 125 are kind of a bummer, but not too unexpected. But the close decisions on matches at weights with clear advantages was a little disconcerting...really want to see us more aggressive and trying to earn points nonstop. I hate PSU as much as anyone, but I love their aggressive approach...everyone not named Luke Pletcher (who just needs to win the close matches) needs to get after it and try to score more.
But it is the first match of the year and plenty of time for our young team to progress, so no worries at all. Go Wrestling Bucks!

Joey McKenna won this year's first B1G Wrestler of the Week Award for his big 11-4 win over Kaid Brock at the NWCA All-Star Classic and turning around in less than 24 hours to travel from Colorado out to Maryland and get a win in our dual. Quite an amazing display of heart and grit from our captain to do that, most would have just wrestled in the NWCA and skipped the dual. Awesome stuff from Joey.

With the huge performance at Super 32, D'Emilio moves up to #2 overall at 132, behind only fellow Buckeye commitment Jordan Decatur. I took a look through the current commitment lists and we are less than a week away from when the recruits can start signing, and PSU only has one ranked senior commitment as of right now since Busiello just decommitted and switched to ASU. This recruiting class could be a big momentum shift in catching up a little bit to PSU, albeit that you are also going to see ASU throw its hat in the ring in a big way, they had a monster class and Zeke Jones is killing it on the recruiting trail. But aside from how big this class is going to be for the guys we got to come to Columbus, it is also huge that PSU only has one commit in the top 100 right now.

Too soon old, too late smart
Saw something about the 'All-Ohio Classic" or ? 13 tOSU wrestlers made finals and 9 were crowned champions? Was this limited to Ohio colleges (seems like it might). Also seems to suggest that it was more of a tOSU scrimmage as well. Being from Cali (and refusing to pay Dispatch online rates), could someone expound on this? Maybe RB07 did and I'm not conversant enough to understand? Thanks and a tip of the hat! Go Bucks!

It was the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, which seemed to include numerous Midwestern colleges. Typically most of our varsity guys do not wrestle in the opens, it is usually for guys that are redshirting...but sometimes you get your young guys out there for experience (see 125 where we had Mead and Heinselmann go). Usually I try to track the opens, as it gives you a chance to see the new freshmen. It looks like we actually sent most of our roster, which is cool but sort of surprising. Here is the link if you want to look at the brackets. It wasn't on my radar, but my thoughts after looking at the brackets:
125: Heinselmann got beat 8-2 by an unranked guy and came back to take 3rd, while Mead dropped two matches and took 5th. Not looking pretty for 125 this year...Malik has plenty of time though and I am not too surprised, he needs time in the weight room and on the mat to adjust up to 125, he is very small.
133: Pletcher killed everyone. No ranked opponents, so not surprising.
141: Quinn Kinner was our guy at 141 and the new freshmen got the win, great start for him.
149: Micah Jordan killed everyone...except new freshman Sammy Sasso, who Mic beat only 9-7 in the finals. Honestly, I find that very encouraging that Sasson wrestled him that tough, as we know what we have in Mic. Sasso tech falled his opponents in getting to the finals.
157: Hayes killed everyone but similar to 149, he barely beat fellow Buckeye Elijah Cleary in the finals. Cleary knocked out Lewan from *ichigan in the semi's, which was a big win. Jaden Mattox also wrestled and lost his first match to Lewan, but then won out to take 5th, so not a bad showing for him.
165: Romero won the tournament here and while he had a couple close matches, nice tournament for him and gets him some confidence early on. Fritz Schierl made it to the finals and lost to Romero 8-6.
174: In somewhat of a shocker, Ethan Smith defeated Campbell 8-5 in the finals...so looks like Smith might be our guy at 174 to start the year. Smith was highly rated guy coming out of high school and a great wrestler in his own right, but not looking positive for Campbell early on.
184: Not shocking, but Martin did not wrestle. True freshmen Gavin Hoffman (#1 at his weight coming out of HS) wrestled here and won the tournament, good for him. Definitely want to keep an eye on how he does.
197: Kevin Snyder won and seemed to wrestle well. Not surprised Moore didn't wrestle.
285: Traub lost in semi's and Singletary beat the guy Traub lost to in finals to take the tournament. Took sudden victory, but glad Chase battled back and got the win. Really need him to start stepping it up as the season goes along.

For sure, overall not a bad first showing it seems, although it is largely tough to tell with the level of competition they were facing. But it is a good way to get 'em going.
