Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

A couple updates:

(1) Kollin Moore is at the U23 World Championships right now, which is one of the toughest tournaments in the world. He came back from an 8-2 deficit in the semi's to lock up a 10-8 win to head into the finals. Tech falled everyone before that match. Amazing accomplishment for Kollin at such an early age no matter what happens in the finals. I had heard Kollin got burnt out towards the end of last season, so hopefully this is the spark he needs to get back to his old self once he throws the scarlet and gray singlet back on.

(2) Kerkvliet, Kharchla and D'Emilio all are officially signed according to the OSU Wrestling Twitter page. Didn't see if the rest signed, but I would imagine they did.

WRESTLING: NO. 2 OHIO STATE UNHORSES CAL BAPTIST LANCERS, 42-0

98960_h.jpg

California Baptist University made the move to Division I competition this season, and the Lancers dominated their first dual meet, a 28-10 victory over Cal Poly. Ohio State's second-ranked wrestling squad, missing national title contenders Myles Martin and Kollin Moore, presented a much different challenge, however.

The Buckeyes won the meet handily, banking 10 straight matches en route to a 42-0 victory and improving to 2-0 on the season. Tom Ryan's squad was simply too talented for the Lancers, flexing their muscles in the first of a pair of dual meets in the scenic Southwest this weekend.

BUCKEYE BREAKDOWN
Even without Martin and Moore, both of whom are wrestling this weekend at the U23 World Freestyle Championships in Romania, Ohio State overpowered the Lancers from the outset.

Brakan Mead opened the dual with a solid decision at 125, racing out to a 7-1 lead over the first two periods, and finishing 8-4. That was the narrowest victory by the Buckeyes over a five-match span, as a quartet of Top-5 wrestlers poured on the points.

No. 5 Luke Pletcher, who made it his mission this season to open up his offense and put more points on the board, did just that in his match at 133 pounds. He looked well on his way to a tech fall with a series of takedowns and tilts in the first two periods, when midway through the second he forced Adam Velasquez's shoulders to the mat for the pin.

Joey McKenna, No. 2 in the country at 141, decided four-and-a-half minutes was simply too long to wrestle: he pinned his opponent in less than 90 seconds.

Micah Jordan, ranked No. 2 at 149, faced probably the toughest test of the night in Daxton Gordon, the reigning NCAA Division II Champion. Gordon put up a good fight, putting some points on the board, but ultimately didn't have enough horsepower to overcome Jordan's combination of brute strength and shifty quickness; Jordan took home a 13-6 decision.

At 157 pounds, Ke-Shawn Hayes put up one of the most impressive technical performances of the night, earning a 16-0 first-period tech fall with devastating work on top. Moving up to 157 this season after falling to Jordan in the team's wrestle-offs, Hayes appears to have put on quality weight and turned his opponent with ease, piling up the back points.

In the 165-pound match, Elijah Cleary, listed on the roster at 157, stepped in the lineup in place of Kaleb Romero, who opened the season as the presumed starter and wrestled as such versus Navy. Romero was listed as the probable starter for both duals this weekend as of Thursday afternoon, but Cleary took to the mat in Riverside.

The match was in essence a seven-minute stalemate, with each wrestler pocketing a single escape point. Riding time was the difference, as Cleary controlled his opponent long enough to earn the go-ahead point for the 2-1 decision.

Like Hayes at 157, Te'Shan Campbell was much too strong for his opponent at 174 pounds. Campbell, who moved up this season from 165, showed why he is considered one of the team's best on top, turning his man at will for near-fall after near-fall, finishing with an 18-0 tech fall.

Ethan Smith and Kevin Snyder each looked solid in relief for Martin and Moore, turning in strong offensive efforts and by and large defending well, too. Smith earned a 12-4 major decision and Snyder was a point off a major of his own, winning a 7-1 decision.

After starting Gary Traub versus Navy, Tom Ryan decided he saw enough from Chase Singletary at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open last weekend to give the redshirt freshman the start versus Cal Baptist. It proved to be a wise decision, as Singletary put forth a strong performance in his first start, earning a 10-0 major decision in the heavyweight match.

WRESTLING: NO. 2 OHIO STATE BEDEVILS NO. 17 ARIZONA STATE, 22-17, DESPITE MISSING TWO NATIONAL TITLE CONTENDERS

99144_h.jpg

Ohio State passed its first big challenge of the season, defeating a Top-10 opponent on the road without two returning All Americans in the lineup. The No. 2 Buckeyes won six of 10 matches, four by major decision, to upend No. 10 Arizona State, 22-17 Sunday afternoon in Tempe.

Kollin Moore and Myles Martin spent the weekend 6,440 miles east, in Bucharest, Romania, where they represented the United States at the U23 Freestyle World Championships. Moore walked away a World Silver Medalist, and Martin made his debut on the international stage in what should be the first of many big-time freestyle tournaments.

Even without the services of two multi-year All Americans, the Buckeyes took care of business and improve to 3-0 on the season. The short story is that the higher-ranked wrestlers prevailed in each match, and Kevin Snyder and Chase Singletary sealed the victory for Ohio State.

Damn good win being down Martin and Moore...honestly was a little worried we would drop this one. You have to give HUGE (insert Trump meme) congrats to Snyder and Singletary...probably not matches we were favored in, yet they pull it off. Definitely will be a dual we want to keep going, Zeke Jones is kiling it with recruiting and the top 3 after this year will be OSU/ASU/PSU for awhile imo. But for 2018-19, this one belongs to the Bucks. Great job guys.

As an aside, Kollin got TF'ed in finals at U23...guy from Georgia has his number by a lot right now. Still a great tournament from Kollin though.

While I certainly root for OSU wrestling, I don't know the sport and pretty much follow it just from this thread unless I happen to have free time when the BIG or NCAA tourney is on (or I'm watching one of our guys in the Olympics). But I happened to catch one of our guys getting crushed 18-1 in this dual. Would I be right in assuming that he was a sub for one of the guys who wasn't available?

Glad you follow our wrestling Bucks and cheer them on :) You are correct that our 125 was a sub, but that weight is just going to be a rough go this year it looks like even with our starter. Usually you would see Brakan Mead or Malik Heinselman, but neither are ranked. Heinselman is a true freshman that needs to adjust up to 125...he is really small right now and needs to get into the college strength and conditioning program...once he does, I expect he will be very good. I will do my best not to disparage Mead, as he is Columbus kid doing his best for the program. Suffice it to say that once we hit conference opponents, we're likely not going to win a match at 125 unless Heinselman steps up. Tough to replace what we had with Tomasello at 125. Long term we will be ok I think, but this year we will have some growing pains at that weight.

Just to clarify, we did sign all of Jordan Decatur, Jacob Decatur, D'Emilio, Kerkvliet and Kharchla. Nice article from the university site on the recruits if you want to read more on them. To summarize, we signed 3 of the top 5 recruits in the nation for the first time and this class is downright amazing. Plus 4 of the 5 were Ohio kids, so love to see us keep the best in the state. Great job by Ryan, might be the best class we ever signed.

Cliff Keen Invitational coming up this weekend, biggest non-conference tournament of the year. Pre-seeds for our guys are below:

No. 3 Luke Pletcher (133 lbs) - 133 is so stacked, this is pretty much your top 5 at nationals minus Gross...really will be interested to see how Suriano and Lizak match up at 133 against Pletcher...Micic rematch for Luke if he can get through Suriano in the semis (and Erneste before that, whole weight is stacked)
No. 1 Joey McKenna (141 lbs) - Like Joey to win it, but will have a strong test in #3 nationally ranked Eierman in the finals.
No. 2 Micah Jordan (149 lbs) - Will be a really strong weight and a good test for Mic to see where he is at nationally at the new weight...#2 Ashnault and #4 Leeth will be two big challenges, #6 Thomsen also there.
No. 4 Ke-Shawn Hayes (157 lbs) - #3 Berger, #5 Deakin and #6 Monday all at the weigh, great chance for Hayes to climb up with a good tourney...I think those guys are all beatable if Hayes wrestles well. Could be really big for his seed at NCAA's down the road.
No. 1 Myles Martin (184 lbs) - Martin should win it, but plenty of tests in #3 Venz, #5 Zavaktsky and #8 Ness below him.
No. 1 Kollin Moore (197 lbs) - Kollin should win it, but might have some closer matches with #8 Traxler and #9 Griego at the weight.

Obviously excited to see the seeded guys, but also want to see how guys like Romero do at 165, Ethan Smith at 174 (I am guessing he will go since he beat Campbell), and Singletary at heavy. Will be a big tournament for their development.

Bucks won the CK this weekend, 148 points and the next closest was Mizzou with 115.5...damn great win, there were some really good teams and individual wrestlers in the CK. My break down of each weight below:

125 - Mead won 1 match in consolations and the rest, not very good. Just going to avoid commenting on this weight this year. Won't have a qualifier here unless MH steps up as a freshman.
133 - Pletcher lost to some random kid from Pitt in the semi's, but beat a very good Lizak for 3rd. Weird result at this weight but I think Luke had a pretty good tourney.
141 - McKenna is going to win it all at 141, kid is focused and wrestling the best matches of his career. Won the whole thing and was really impressive doing it. Awesome stuff from Joey.
149 - Mic lost in the finals 14-10 to Ashnault, but had a great tourney. Had some amazing wins and on any given day, I truly think Mic can beat Ashnault. Today wasn't that day, but that's fine...hoping his day is in March.
157 - The whole weight was kind of a disaster here, but Hayes had a good tournament overall. He lost a match he should have never lost early on, but came back and beat some really quality opponents to take 4th. That being said, I don't see us getting anyone on the podium at this weight unless Hayes wrestles out of his mind at this weight.
165: Romero won his first match, lost to White by a fairly wide margin, but then was out with a medical forfeit. No idea here.
174: Smith won a match in consi's, but that is it. Might not even have a qualifier at this weight unless Smith or Campbell gets a lot better over the course of the year. Really need more here.
184: Martin dominated Venz to an 11-5 win. Myles should get his second championship if he keeps wrestling like this, he is elite right now.
197: Can pretty much say the same thing here for Kollin as I did for Myles at 184, Kollin dominated in epic fashion and won it. It is a ways out, but can't wait to see him wrestle Nickal, there will be a ton of fireworks and their styles will be awesome to watch. Might be the match I am waiting for the most of any, damn that will be exciting.
HWT: Chase won a HUGE match against Jennings and then pins Stencel...hell of a great start to the tourney and Chase was a huge reason why we won the tournament. But then he lost 2 straight matches in a row to take 6th. I am inclined to say that this is a really good performance here...if Chase keeps improving here, he can put points up in March and that is what we need.

Our Buckeye commits did pretty well at the Ironman, we had 5 placers and the most points scored by our commits. Karchla won the tournament at 170 in a big rematch against Julian Ramirez from Blair, whom he beat 5-2...really great win. Jordan DeCatur took 3rd after falling in the semis at 132 and beat fellow OSU commit Dylan D'Eilio. Jacob Decatur took 6th at 113, but looks like he might have had to take a medical forfeit at some point. Either way, really tough tournament and those are some pretty good results overall.

Ethan Smith may have saved the day.

Ohio State led by a single point after the first six matches of the team's first home meet of the season, splitting the matches evenly with the visiting Wisconsin Badgers. Smith, a redshirt freshman who had never previously defeated a Top-10 opponent, took the mats to face No. 9 Ryan Christensen in place of senior Te'Shan Campbell.

Head coach Tom Ryan confirmed Friday that Campbell is battling an injury, and that Smith might get the call. After Zander and Evan Wick won back-to-back matches at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, the Badgers looked like they would take the lead with a win at 174.

Christensen went to work right out of the gate, taking Smith feet to back for a 4-point move. Smith didn't shrink away, however, earning a reversal to narrow the score. An escape for Christensen gave him a 5-2 lead at the end of the first three minutes.

Smith started the second period on top, and got the Badger on his back for a 4-point near-fall to take the lead, 6-5 at the end of the second period. The Buckeye took bottom to start the final frame of the match, and a quick reversal gave him an 8-6 edge heading into the final minute.

In a final flurry of activity, Smith tacked on another takedown, which Christensen parlayed into a reversal. The second stall warning on Smith gave the Badger another point, but it wasn't enough to recapture the lead, and Ethan Smith walked away with the 10-9 decision and his first win over a Top-10 opponent.

Not a bad showing overall with Hayes and Romero out at 157 and 165. That being said, Cleary did an awesome job to keep it to a decision at 157 and Ferro held it to a major against Wick at 165, who might win the title at that weight this year. Also, Campbell is injured once again at 174 but luckily Ethan Smith is a stud at that weight and there is not a ton of dropoff. The only remotely disappointing loss was Singletary, but he lost to the #9 guy in the country...he is going to be good here, but he is going to take some lumps along the way as he grows into the weight.
