Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Nice win for the Bucks. Purdue had some solid wrestlers and we took care of business. Was really hoping Ethan Smith could knock off Lydy to add to his resume, winnable match and hopefully he can get him in the post season. Hayes had a really quality win at 157, seems like the gap between the top 3 at that weight and the field is huge. Really glad to see Heinselmann, Romero and Singletary get convincing wins, those guys need the confidence to get built to start wrestling to their potential. Next dual against the Corn will be a close one.

Overall a good dual. Singletary got an enormous win over Jensen to close out the meet, McKenna had a big win over Red, and Myles destroyed one of the best guys at his weight. Would have been nice to see Malik, Hayes or Campbell win, but it was close enough. Need those guys to step up soon though.

Singletary moved all the way up to #11 with his win over Jensen. He is going to have some very winnable matches in the B1G and if he wins a couple of those, Chase could be looking at a solid seed for the NCAA's. Chase is steadily improving and if he and Heinselmann can both keep coming along, hopefully they will peak at the right time.

KOLLIN MOORE NAMED CO-BIG TEN WRESTLER OF THE WEEK AFTER PAIR OF RANKED WINS

102547_h.jpg

Kollin Moore had a big weekend in B1G action.

The conference honored the redshirt junior with the second Big Ten Wrestler of the Week award, the second weekly honor of his career. Ranked No. 2 in the country at 197 pounds, Moore picked up a pair of victories over top-12 opponents to help Ohio State defeat Nebraska and Purdue in the final weekend of the Big Ten dual-meet season.

The conference split the award between Moore and Iowa's Alex Marinelli, a graduate of the famed Graham wrestling program in St. Paris, Ohio.

Moore kicked off the weekend by defeating No. 9 Christian Brunner at Purdue by a 12-5 decision on Friday night, and followed that up with a 7-5 decision over No. 11 Eric Schultz of Nebraska on Sunday in St. John Arena.

This is going to be a tough dual, but I am really looking forward to the match at 141...huge opportunity for Joey and a potential sneak peak at the national championship match...something was off in his match against Nick Lee, I see him bouncing back. 133 and the matches from 174-HWT will also be some great matchups. Always interesting to see how we perform outside of the B1G grind.

Re: NOTABLE MATCHES
141 POUNDS: NO. 3 JOEY MCKENNA VS. NO. 1 YIANNI DIAKOMIHALIS

Yianni D burst onto the scene as a true freshman, riding a 37-1 record all the way to an NCAA title in Cleveland last March. He became the second rookie in Cornell history to win a title, joining four-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake.

Twenty-six of his 37 victories last season came with bonus points, including nine pins and eight tech falls.

In his impressive title run, Diakomihalis topped two-time defending national champion Dean Heil of Oklahoma State, avenged his only loss of the year by upending Missouri's Jaydin Eierman, and knocked off top seed and reigning national runner-up Bryce Meredith of Wyoming as the No. 3 seed in the tournament.

He did not, it should be said, face Joey McKenna who fell to Meredith in a 1-0 semifinal decision. Friday night's bout with Diakomihalis has the feel of an NCAA finals preview, with McKenna sitting at No. 3 and holding just one loss on the year.

McKenna has outscored his opposition by a combined score of 163-40 this season, not counting his two wins by pin. On the other side of the ledger, he has surrendered only three takedowns and a single reversal.

When asked to scout the competition, McKenna and Ryan agreed that the Buckeye shoots and finishes at a higher rate than Diakomihalis, and they feel that will be the difference in the match.

NO. 2 OHIO STATE CRUSHES NO. 7 CORNELL IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE, 25-9 IN ITHACA

102620_h.jpg

Ohio State took a road trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York for its final dual meet of the regular season and won in a rout of No. 7 Cornell, 25-9. Seven Buckeyes won their matches, including redshirt freshmen Ethan Smith and Chase Singletary in battles with ranked opponents.

Although Ohio State raced out to a 25-0 lead after the first seven bouts of the night, the dual ended on a flat note for the Buckeyes as the home team won the final trio of matches, including the night's marquee battle between No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis and No. 3 Joey McKenna at 141 pounds. The defending NCAA champion stayed perfect on the season, outlasting McKenna in a 7-5 decision.

Diakomihalis scored first and would hold the lead throughout the match despite McKenna's best efforts. At one point, McKenna appeared to be in on a single, but Diakomihalis defended well and ended up landing a trip of his own for two more points. The Buckeye kept it close, but couldn't finish a takedown to tie the score before time expired.

Ohio State won every match it was favored to win save one: No. 6 Luke Pletcher dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 11 Chas Tucker in a match in which neither man recorded a takedown, a theme Buckeye fans have grown uncomfortably familiar with in the latter half of this season. Pletcher told reporters Thursday that he had been in what felt like the longest "slump" of his career through a string of low-scoring decisions, but thought he had broken through with a major decision versus Nebraska last week.

Friday's match in Ithaca looked nothing like that offensive explosion, however, with the score tied at an escape apiece at the end of regulation. Neither man scored in sudden victory, sending the match to rideouts. Both sides threw their challenge bricks in the first 30-second tiebreaker period, and both challenges went in favor of Cornell; Tucker was able to ride Pletcher for the entire :30 period, and was able to escape for the go-ahead point midway through TB-2.

It wasn't until the eighth match of the night that the home team got on the scoreboard at all, as Ohio State steamrolled its hosts from the opening bout. Micah Jordan added another tech fall to his record, Ke-Shawn Hayes got a major decision and Te'Shan Campbell won his 10th match of the season, putting the Buckeyes up by a dozen after the first three matches.

Next up was Ethan Smith, the redshirt freshman who wrested the 174-pound spot away from Campbell midway through the year. Smith faced his eighth ranked opponent of the year, and came away with his fourth victory; he continues to get better week after week.

Myles Martin did what Myles Martin does: make top-10 opponents look like mere mortals. No. 6 Max Dean is a solid wrestler, and showed no fear in the face of the clear No. 1 in the 184-pound class, but Martin simply outpaced and overpowered him. Martin took Dean to the mat seemingly at will, and tacked on a gorgeous reversal in the second period for good measure.

Martin finished the regular season undefeated. He was one of just 13 Division I wrestlers who remained perfect going into the final weekend of the regular season.

Kollin Moore had no trouble with No. 8 Ben Honis, reinforcing the idea that 197 pounds is Bo Nickal, Kollin Moore and then everyone else. Moore said last week that his biggest challenge last season was maintaining mental toughness, and if he can maintain the pace he's set throughout the dual-meet schedule, he should have an outstanding postseason.

Really good win to close out the season. Excellent wins for Ethan Smith, Singletary, Martin and Moore. Very disappointing loss for Pletcher, who is clearly regressing this year to the point where I don't even think he'll AA this year. Tough loss for Joey at 141, but you know he is right there...just get him at the NCAA's when it matters. But overall I really think that this is a great result, great job Bucks!
