Basically, anything that could have gone wrong did go wrong last year. It was clear that it was going to be a rebuilding year, as the team lost three huge studs to graduation (Pucillo, L. Palmer, Humphrey) and an All-American to a redshirt year (Triggas). National qualifiers Dave Rella and Cory Morrison also graduated. Despite these losses, OSU looked to field a young but promising lineup that looked as follows:

125 - Logan Steiber - Fr. (#1 recruit in the nation, 4x state champ)
133 - Ian Paddock - So. (coming off a strong freshman season, 2 wins at nationals)
141 - Colin Palmer - RFr. (4x state champ)
149 - Sean Nemec - RJr. (3x state champ, ok at 157 in 09-10)
157 - Tony Jameson - RSo. (4x state champ, looked promsing in 09-10)
165 - Colt Sponseller - Sr. (2x national qualifer, B1G 2nd place, stud)
174 - Nick Heflin - RFr. (very high ceiling)
184 - Pete Capone - RFr.
197 - C.J. Magrum - RSo. (2 wins at nationals)
285 - John Hiles - RSo.

This lineup never materialized, however. Jameson never took the mat due to a career ending injury, and injury also led to the end of Palmer's career shortly into the season. Sponseller moved to 157 in an attempt to win a national title, but his results were less than impressive due to the weight cut. In the meantime, Logan Steiber suffered a season-ending injury and Hiles left the team. All of these losses led to wrestlers taking the mat for OSU who were either not ready for B1G wrestling, or who flat out just weren't good enough to make an impact. Ian Paddock also struggled with myriad injuries throughout the year, not helping matters.

Ultimately, the team was able to send five to nationals (Paddock, Sponseller, Heflin, Magrum, Capone), where Sponseller finished 4th and Heflin made the round of 12.

2011-2012 will be another rebuilding year, but things are looking much brighter with the addition of the #1 recruiting class in the country and the return of Logan Steiber to the lineup. Triggas may be back as well, but he may also take an Olympic redshirt. Paddock will likely redshirt in order to get his health back to 100%.

While not everything went as planned for the Ohio State wrestling team last season, they ended the year on a positive note by signing the nation?s top recruiting class. Getting the 2011-2012 school year off to a great start, the Buckeye coaches received their first verbal commitment from Wadsworth senior Nick Tavanello on Monday. A three-time state place winner, Tavanello is currently ranked number 26 in the InterMat Top 100 from the Class of 2012.

?I felt like Ohio State was the best fit for me to become a great college heavyweight and to get a great education,? commented Tavanello on the phone Tuesday night. ?From the coaches to the wrestlers and from the alumni to the fans there are a lot of great people that love Buckeye wrestling.?

Asked about making an early commitment, Nick was confident he made the right decision.

?I grew up an Ohio State fan, but I did my research and looked around. I talked to some other schools, even though in my heart I knew I always wanted to be Buckeye. I have family and friends down there and I know that I am going to feel comfortable,? offered Tavanello. ?I enjoyed the recruiting process, but at the end of the day they (OSU) had a little more in every way than anyone else and it was an easy decision to make.?

Huge pickup for the Bucks. Should hopefully put an end to their recent Heavyweight problems.

This will likely be a small class for OSU after bringing in the nation's #1 class last season. Hearing that the other main targets will be George DiCamillo of St. Ignatius and Nate Skonieczny of Walsh Jesuit.

Interview with Head Coach Tom Ryan:

Coach Ryan thinks the lineup will look like this:

125 - Triggas is taking an Olympic redshirt, so the spot will be manned by either Bo Touris or Johnni DiJulius. Ryan mentions that Touris is the returning starter, but that DiJulius has been working harder and believes that Johnni will probably start.

133 - Logan Steiber (btw, Logan recently placed 2nd at the World Junior Freestyle Championships, the best showing of any American).

141 - Coach Ryan indicates that Randy Languis has made great progress and that he will wrestle off with Hunter Steiber for the spot.

149 - Wrestle off between Mike Fee and Cam Tessari.

157 - Josh Demas

165 - Derek Garcia

174 - Nick Heflin

184 - C.J. Magrum. Mentions that Courts looks good but is a bit banged up.

197 - Andrew Campolattano. Ryan seemed very high on Andrew.

285 - Pete Capone. Ryan says that Capone has done a great job putting on weight and is up to 226.

Mark Martin verbals to OHIO STATE! Mark is currently ranked at #52 on the InterMat top 100. Mark is also a two-time state finalist and won state last year at 152 pounds. He plans on wrestling at 170 this season and projects to 174 at OSU!

In terms of team success, I think taking 4th in the conference is a good goal. Penn State, Iowa, and Minnesota will be really tough to beat.

The more important thing will be individual success. The team will be very very very young. There is a good chance the starting lineup will consist of 7 freshman, 2 sophomores, and 1 junior. And one of those sophomores, who on this team are the veterans, is making a drastic change in weight (Capone). Accordingly, for most of these guys the hope is simply that they are competitive and show signs of growth throughout the season.

At this point, I'd say 2 AAs (Logan and Heflin) plus 5-6 more guys at nationals would be a solid year. Aside from that, it's hard to say.

Should be an exciting year!

Can't really speak to their line-up for this year, but the Big 12 has consistently been the 2nd strongest conference in the nation (after the Big 10). Top tier Big 12 programs over the long term are probably Iowa State and Okie State, followed by Nebraska and maybe Oklahoma (sometimes Missouri will have a pretty strong line-up). At any rate, Nebraska is a nice addition to the Big Ten; they will be a respectable challenge for the top tier programs, but I'd be surprised to see them win it all very often.

As Hiney said, Nebraska is an extremely solid program and will make the incredibly strong B1G into an ever tougher wrestling conference. They don't appear to be quite as good as usual this year (ranked #35 by Intermat), but will add depth. Nebraska loses Jordan Burroughs, a two time NCAA champion who was the best wrestler in the NCAA in any weight class last season. They do, however, have a good amount of young talent. D1 College wrestling ranks their recruiting class as #2 in the country (behind Ohio State). The Huskers brought in #16 James Green, #20 Donny Longendyke, and #22 Jake Sueflohn. Tyler Caldwell, the NCAA runner up last year to Burroughs at 165 also transferred in from Oklahoma. He has two years of eligibility left and will be redshirting this season.

133 - Ridge Kiley, junior, ranked #18, went 1-2 at Nationals last year
165 - Robert Kokesh, freshman, ranked #11, 34-1 in open tournaments last year with his only loss coming by default to Burroughs
184 - Josh Ihnen, junior, ranked #11, two time NCAA qualifier, Big 12 runner up last year, made NCAA round of 12
285 - Tucker Lane, senior, ranked #9, three time NCAA qualifier, made NCAA round of 12 last season

(Columbus, Ohio) - The Ohio State wrestling team continued building towards the future when they received their third verbal commitment from the Class of 2012, Nick Roberts. A three-time state place winner for the North Star HS, Roberts won individual Pennsylvania state titles as a freshman and junior and 103 and 112 pounds. Nick is currently ranked no. 30 in the InterMat Top 100 and he finished last year ranked fifth nationally at 112.

?It is a great feeling to be an Ohio State Buckeye,? stated Roberts when asked about his commitment. ?I really don?t know what to say other than I am really excited and happy to see what is ahead in the years to come.?
