Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Excellent win. McKenna beating Jack like that is huge...Joe can win the whole thing if he wrestles like that. I think getting focused back on folk style and having a consistent target weight of 141 is doing wonders for him. Also excellent wins out of NaTo, Pletcher, Hayes, Campbell, Martin and Snyder, all quality wins over good opponents. Moore losing is disappointing but overall, that's a great bounce back performance heading into the post-season. NC State is a very good team and that is a statement to beat them like that.

JOEY MCKENNA NAMED BIG TEN WRESTLER OF THE WEEK AFTER UPSETTING NO. 2 KEVIN JACK

91222_h.jpg

Joey McKenna earned a big win, conference honors and major momentum heading into the postseason with his biggest victory of the year. Sunday's upset of No. 2 Kevin Jack, a 6-2 decision, not only helped fuel the Buckeye beatdown of the North Carolina State Wolfpack, but also earned him Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors.

McKenna's pair of first-period takedowns set the tone for the match, and the decision gave the offseason Stanford transfer his signature win of the season. He improved to 12-1 overall and 3-1 against Top-15 opponents at the close of regular-season action.

It was only Jack's second loss of the season, and propelled McKenna back in the consensus top 5 of the rankings.

Key weights for me in the tourney are 125, 133, 157, 165, 174 and 197. I know they are all important and obviously winning the B1G would be nice, but I am just looking at which side of the bracket we might land on and what benefit it would be come semi finals.
  • If NaTo wins the B1G and beats both Suriano and Lee, I think he gets the 1 seed, then Suriano and Lee have to face each other at the #2 and #3 seed (although Cruz might slip in at #3...I would much rather NaTo have Cruz on his side as a #4).
  • If Pletcher can beat Micic this time around, he gets the better seed winning 2 of 3 and I think he slots in at the #2 seed. If Pletcher loses, I could see a #4 seed with Kaid Brock passing him and being on the same side of #1 Gross...would much prefer either Brock or Micic again in the semi's).
  • At 141, there is a ton of parity and I think pretty much any of the top 8 could win it imo, so I don't see McKenna's seed being overly important...that being said, I hope he makes it into the finals. 149 likely not be terribly important because you will face either Nolf or Sorensen in the semi's, which is where it likely ends...then there are about 5-6 guys Hayes is right there with.
  • I see 157 as important for Micah to get over the hump and beat Pantaleo, and maybe pass Pantaleo, Shields and Lavalle to go up significantly in his seeding...then you will have Nolf, Kemmerer and Hidlay likely as a solid top 3. Now it could get interesting if Nolf is not able to go, as Micah could conceivably get up to a #3 seed.
  • 165 is important for Campbell to win some matches he might not be favored in this weekend...he is not beating any of Joseph, IMAR or Marinelli, but if he could beat any of Wick, Waznek, Lewis, White or Massa, that would be a huge plus...beat two of them and I think he jumps up the seeding chart quite a bit.
  • 174 is the biggest for me and by a considerable bit...Bo HAS to beat Amine and get that one back...if he can pull of a win against Hall in the finals (totally conceivable), I think there is a good chance he jumps all the way to #2 since he made the finals last year. Even if he gets up to #3, that keeps him off the same side as Valencia...I could see Bo being seeded #4 behind Lewis and Kutler if he does not beat Hall.
  • 184 is not that important overall, the difference between #1 and #2 is not that big imo and that is what Nickal and MyMar will be (MyMar might still be #2 since it would be a split and Nickal won it last year).
  • As for 197, really important for Moore to reverse course and get back to the top...if he beats Rasheed and Wilcke, that may get him the #1 seed. However, the recent losses do not help...I think he might pass a couple guys and still be behind Haught at #2. However, I think if Moore wins he has a good chance at getting the #1 seed with his finish at NCAA's last year.
  • Of course I want to see Snyder win the rematch, but this does not matter for seeding. Snyder and Coon will meet again in the finals at the NCAA's.

A good start for most including NaTo dominating the PSU kid who gave him a little trouble earlier in the year.

Pletcher has to pull one out against an inferior guy and Campbell doing Campbell things were the only downers.

Nice to see Myles, McKenna, and especially Bo get a pin.

Nolf from PSU had a first period fall, so he is well on his way back.

Pletcher in top form for himself doing his usual 1 point wins....hey, I'll take it!

Was surprised Campbell got handled that easily by White but so far that's the only downside of the day.

*Wish the byes for the tournament were handled a little different.

Solid session this am. I think we end up with 6 in the finals. I think Luke could struggle with McKee if he doesn't score early... Micah vs Kemmer favors Kemmer and Hayes isn't beating Zane. I do think that Nato gets Lee by staying off bottom and converting those takedowns he didn't get last time

That neutral start could come back to haunt him. Perhaps he should let Lee get out immediately and have 2 min to try for a take down

Wow! Way to go!

This is why Pletcher's style hurts so much. Its hard to always win super close matches. Holy bleep... somehow he does!

Way to go Joey... and a good effort by Hayes to keep it from a Tech or Fal

But holy bleep number 2! Way to go Micah!
